Endoscopic resection of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas remain rare tumors representing approximately 0.05% of head and neck tumors. The typical presentation is a male teenager with recurrent epistaxis and nasal obstruction. These tumors were traditionally approached via external and/or intraoral incisions, but many are amenable to endoscopic removal. Preoperative embolization of major feeding vessels to these tumors by interventional radiology has resulted in significantly less blood loss and facilitated endoscopic resection. The following chapter discusses endoscopic resection of juvenile nasopharyngeal angio

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma as a paradigm of cancer genetics.

The unusual incidence patterns for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in China, Northeast India, Arctic Inuit, Peninsular and island Southeast Asia, Polynesian Islanders, and North Africans indicate a role for NPC risk genes in Chinese, Chinese-related, and not-obviously Chinese-related populations. Renewed interest in NPC genetic risk has been stimulated by a hypothesis that NPC population patterns originated in Bai-Yue / pre-Austronesian-speaking aborigines and were dispersed during the last glacial maximum by Sundaland submersion. [Evolution in the treatment of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma].

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare benign tumour in adolescent males. It may be associated with a significant morbidity because of its anatomical location and its locally destructive growth pattern. Severe haemorrhage constitutes a high risk in JNA and its surgical management could be complex. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We retrospectively analysed the clinical data from 43 patients with JNA surgically treated in our Department from 1993 until 2010. Mean postoperative follow-up time was 85 months. RESULTS: Analysis was performed on 42 males and one female. Mean patie

Nasopharyngeal tooth foreign body in a dog.

An 8-year-old Shih-tzu dog was presented with a 2-week history of cough and nasal discharge. Upon presentation, the dog had constant open-mouth breathing with stertor and blood-tinged mucopurulent nasal discharge. Oral examination revealed a missing right mandibular second premolar tooth and severe periodontal disease. Computed tomography showed a radiodense, retropharyngeal foreign body. The foreign body was removed using caudal rhinoscopy. The foreign body was the right mandibular second premolar covered by thick calculus.

Nasopharyngeal foreign body in an young child.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of dementia is increasing exponentially. Early detection of dementia-causing diseases could support therapeutic intervention to decelerate disease progression. Wearable digital technologies can be used to identify early signs of such diseases and remotely monitor disease progression. However, technologies must be acceptable to users. This study explored the perspectives of participants on the acceptability of various wearable technologies for early detection. METHOD: Participants from the Cognitive Decline using Digital Devices (CODEC-II) cohort used four dif

Aspergillus pachymeningitis mimicking nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: We report a case of otogenic fungal pachymeningitis in a diabetic patient who presented with multiple cranial nerve palsies and nasopharyngeal swelling. METHODS: We present a case report, we describe the investigations, management and clinical course of fungal pachymeningitis, and we present a review of the world literature on fungal and non-fungal pachymeningitis. RESULTS: To our knowledge, this is the first report of fungal pachymeningitis with magnetic resonance imaging features suggestive of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. It is also the first reported case with aspergillus culture

Nasopharyngeal trichobezoar foreign body in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old male neutered indoor cat presented for evaluation and treatment of an acute onset of nasal discharge and open-mouth breathing of 3 days' duration. He had been treated for asthma prior to presentation, but his clinical signs were more consistent with upper airway disease. Thoracic radiographs were suggestive of asthma. However, a soft tissue mass was noted in the nasopharynx on a lateral cervical radiograph. Nasopharyngeal examination revealed the mass to be a trichobezoar (hair ball) lodged in the nasopharynx, removal of which led to resolution of clinical signs. The

Nasopharyngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma: a case report.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma is a type of neuroendocrine system neoplasm that occurs in organisms in which amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) cells are uncommon. In the human body, the most common sites of neuroendocrine carcinoma are the gastrointestinal tract and the lungs. From a histologic standpoint, these tumors are identified by their positive reaction to silver stains and specific markers for neuroendocrine tissues, such as chromogranin A, synaptophysin, and neuron-specific enolase. In addition to local symptoms, these tumors may cause flushing, wheezing, and episodic diarrh

Paraneoplastic syndromes in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer.

Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS) represent the clinical manifestation of the remote and indirect effects produced by tumor metabolites or other products. Paraneoplastic effects are not directly mediated by tumor invasion of normal tissue, or by the disruption of normal function of the involved organ, or by distant metastases. More than 260 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) associated with PNS have been reported in the literature. These syndromes can be divided into six main groups: cutaneous or dermatologic, endocrine, hematologic, osteoarticular or rheumatologic, neurologic, and ocular. T

[Nasopharyngeal tonsillolith: a report of 31 cases].

OBJECTIVE: Nasopharyngeal tonsilloliths are less well known to radiologists than palatine tonsil lithiases. The possibility of routinely available fine slices during CT scans of the head and neck prompted a retrospective study on the causes and radiological signs and patterns of nasopharyngeal tonsilloliths. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 515 CT scans were retrospectively re-examined looking for calcifications of the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. One patient with this type of calcification underwent a cerebral MRI as part of the etiological workup of his faintness, which also provided

Prevertebral muscle involvement in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and prognostic significance of prevertebral muscle involvement in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between July 1990 and December 2001, 521 newly diagnosed patients with NPC treated at Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center (KF-SYSCC) were examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for evidence of prevertebral muscle involvement before treatment. Patients were staged according to the 1997 American Joint Committee on Cancer staging classification of NPC based on the physical exams and MRI

Survival differences by race in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Incidence rates of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are much higher among Chinese than they are among most other racial/ethnic groups around the world. With respect to NPC, results from survival studies are mixed, as some studies have and others have not found differences by race/ethnicity. Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program data, the authors used a multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model to evaluate differences in risk of mortality among NPC patients across Chinese, non-Hispanic White, Black, and Filipino populations in the United States. From 1973 t

[Nasopharyngeal carcinomas: from biology to clinic].

Nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC) are very different from other head and neck cancers because of their specific multifactorial etiology and their geographic distribution. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is implicated in oncogenesis of NPC in association with genetic alterations such as inactivation of the p16/Ink4, p19/ARF, RASSF1 or Blu genes. Tumoral tissues include a very abundant characteristic lymphoid infiltrate. Inflammatory cytokines are produced by both malignant and infiltrating cells. There is no efficient immune response against the tumor. On the opposite, infiltrating lymphocytes might pla
