Orbital myxoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Myxomas are rare, locally infiltrative, benign neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Although benign, these tumors are locally aggressive with a high rate of recurrence following conservative resection. Their relative infrequency, variable location, and insidious growth present a diagnostic challenge to clinicians. Cases of myxomas have been described throughout the body, but intraosseous myxomas of the orbit are exceedingly rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 53-year-old male with a history of chronic sinusitis and symptoms of hyposmia and bifrontal headaches refractory medi

Outcome and complications of extended cranial-base resection requiring microvascular free-tissue transfer.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the complications of extensive cranial-base resection requiring free-tissue transfer (FTT) and the effect of these resections on local control and survival among patients with malignant neoplasms of the skull base. BACKGROUND: Before the advent of FTT, cranial-base surgery was often limited by our inability to adequately repair defects comprising communication between the central nervous system and upper aerodigestive tract. The use of FTT in cranial-base resections was therefore assessed to determine whether the improved procedure (ie, extensive resections) would imp

Canine gastric mucosal sarcoma: a novel tumour type.

BACKGROUND: Gastric neoplasia is uncommon in dogs accounting for ⟨1% of all neoplasms. Mesenchymal tumours arise from the muscularis layer of the gastric wall and represent 10-30% of canine gastric neoplasms. Gastric sarcomas arising from the muscularis layer of the stomach have not previously been reported. CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old, female spayed labrador was referred for investigation of chronic vomiting and regenerative anaemia. Abdominal imaging revealed a large solitary pedunculated mass (65 × 62 × 56 mm) within the pylorus and proximal duodenum. A Billroth I procedure was performed to

[Paget disease of the vulva: resolution after local treatment with imiquimod--report of a case and review of the literature].

Paget disease is a rare disorder of the skin of the vulva, comprising less than 1% of vulvar neoplasms. Surgical excision is considered the standard of care. While the invasive variant of Paget disease is rare, frequent local recurrences from non-invasive disease, which are inoperable, constitute a major clinical problem. In this article we report on a 71-year-old patient with recurrent disease treated successfully with imiquimod cream. Symptoms such as local itching subsided shortly after initiation of treatment. Four weeks later, first signs of resolution could be demonstrated colposcopicall

Surgical outcomes of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare tumors with heterogeneous pathology, typically treated with appendectomy, cecectomy, right hemicolectomy, or cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Survival outcomes across surgical approaches remain unclear. We evaluated the outcomes of all surgical interventions for appendiceal mucinous neoplasms. METHODS: Eligible randomized controlled trials and cohort studies were retrieved from Cochrane, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus to August, 2026. Outcomes included overall and disease-free survival, recurrence,

Radiation-induced osteosarcoma 16 years after surgery and radiation for glioma--case report.

A 35-year-old man developed osteosarcoma of the left parietal and occipital bones 16 years after radiotherapy for glioma in the right occipital lobe. Radiotherapy of the primary neoplasm used 50 Gy administered to a localized field through two lateral ports. The secondary neoplasm arose contralateral to the primary lesion but within the irradiated field. The tumor had a multilocular cyst with considerable intracranial extension, and symptoms of elevated intracranial pressure were prominent early in the course. After a short-lived initial remission following surgical intervention and chemothera

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin: the Mayo Clinic experience over the past 2 decades.

BACKGROUND: Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (PMCS) is a rare adnexal eccrine sweat gland neoplasm, often mistaken for metastasis from extracutaneous sites or misdiagnosed. Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin is a slow-growing tumor with a high recurrence rate after conventional excision. OBJECTIVE: To describe clinicopathologic features, rate of recurrence, and metastasis and to review relevant literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors identified patients with PMCS treated from January 1992 through December 2012 at Mayo Clinic. The authors retrospectively reviewed medical reco

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the vulva: case report and review of the literature with emphasis on clinical management and outcome.

BACKGROUND: Malignant extrarenal rhabdoid tumors (ERTs) of the vulva are rare but aggressive neoplasms. We describe the eighth reported case and the first to have long-term survival despite initial rapid recurrence. CASE: A 40-year-old woman presented with a painless lump on the mons pubis. It was excised and revealed an ERT. One month later, the tumor had regrown. A wide local excision and superficial right groin node dissection was performed. Local recurrence was noted 11 months after the initial excision and was treated by wide excision and radiotherapy. She is without evidence of disease

[Radiation-induced morphea-an overview].

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced morphea is a fibro-inflammatory remodelling process of the subcutaneous connective tissue caused by ionising radiation, most commonly in the context of breast cancer treatment. The underlying pathomechanisms and putative risk factors are unknown. Therefore, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment pose a significant problem in the care of those patients. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to provide an overview as well as guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of radiation-induced morphea based on current case reports and review articles. RESULTS AND CONCLUS

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Malignant salivary gland neoplasms present a significant diagnostic challenge, requiring the integration of clinical, radiological, and pathological assessments. Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare malignant neoplasm that exhibits a biphasic histopathological pattern. Although the major salivary glands are most commonly affected, EMC can also involve minor salivary glands and, in rare instances, the seromucous glands of the upper aerodigestive tract. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 47-year-old male presented with a right-sided parotid mass. On physical exam

Issues in Managing Hurthle Cell Carcinoma of Thyroid: A Case Report.

A 61-year-old woman noticed a right neck lump in October 2001. Fine needle aspiration showed follicular neoplasm, adenoma versus carcinoma. The ultrasound scan showed a solid mass of maximum dimension of 3.7 cm. She had a right thyroid lobectomy and isthmectomy in January 2002 (first surgery). The tissue specimen showed a 4.5 cm Hurthle cell carcinoma (HCC) with vascular invasion. There were no capsular invasion, extra-thyroidal extension, or margin involvement. A completion left lobectomy (second surgery) was performed two weeks later. Therefore the pathological stage is II (T3N0M0). She rece

Recurrent Adenomatous Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Middle Ear: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Middle ear adenomatous neuroendocrine tumor (MEANT) poses a diagnostic challenge. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific. Definite diagnosis is made by histopathological analysis of the tumor after a complete surgical resection based on an extensive computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (CT/MRI). Controversial terminology of the neoplasm arises from the differentiation of this tumor composed of both endocrine and exocrine glands. Middle ear (ME) localization is rare and less aggressive than gastrointestinal tract or lung localizations. Nevertheless, clinical and CT/MRI analyses are necessa

Morphologic diversity of malignant neoplasms arising in preexisting spiradenoma, cylindroma, and spiradenocylindroma based on the study of 24 cases, sporadic or occurring in the setting of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome.

The authors present a series of 24 malignant neoplasms arising in preexisting benign spiradenoma (20), cylindroma (2), and spiradenocylindroma (2). Nineteen patients (12 females, 7 males; age range, 41 to 92 y) had a solitary neoplasm (size range, 2.2 to 17.5 cm; median 4 cm), whereas the remaining 5 (4 females, 1 male; age range, 66 to 72 y) manifested clinical features of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (BSS), an autosomal dominantly inherited disease characterized by widespread, small, benign neoplasms on which background larger malignant lesions appeared. Microscopically, all cases showed the res

Intercalary Elbow Resection and Arthrodesis for Giant Cell Tumor of Distal Humerus: Something Is Better Than Nothing.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm of epiphyseal origin. Most common sites for GCTs include the distal femur, proximal tibia, and the distal end of radius with the distal humerus being involved rarely. GCT is predominantly managed by extended curettage followed by adjuvant therapy to reduce recurrence. Juxta-articular GCTs are difficult to manage due to the destruction of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone which necessitates the need for joint reconstruction or fusion to salvage the joint. Aggressive and recurrent GCTs can be managed by wide r

Recurrent EWSR1::COLCA2 Fusions Define a Novel Sarcoma With Spindle/Round Cell Morphology and Strong Predilection for the Sinonasal Tract.

The last 2 decades have attended a dynamic evolution in the nosology of poorly differentiated sinonasal tract malignancies, with several new molecularly defined entities having been described in addition to delineation of the genetic driver/s of some established older entities. These discoveries, however, mostly concerned epithelial-derived neoplasms (carcinomas). Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma and biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma are the major representatives of the newly defined mesenchymal categories. The colorectal cancer associated 2 (COLCA2) has been discovered recently as a colorectal ca

Treatment of parotid gland oncocytoma: a case report from a radiation oncologist's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Parotid oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm for which surgical excision remains the standard treatment. Although the recurrence rate is generally low, it increases significantly in cases with multifocal lesions or incomplete surgical excision. In such scenarios, postoperative radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to improve local control, reduce recurrence rates, and minimize the need for reoperation. This report presents a representative case of parotid oncocytoma, with a focused discussion on therapeutic decision-making from a radiation oncologist's perspective. CASE REPORT: We repo
