Glioneuronal tumours are a group of primary brain neoplasms of relatively recent acquisition in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of the Central Nervous System tumours. In diagnostic practice it is still possible to encounter glioneuronal tumours that cannot be placed into any of the well-defined WHO categories despite a growing list of entities. We have recently published four paediatric cases of diffuse leptomeningeal tumours that cannot be easily classified in the currently used CNS WHO classification, but which have histological and immunohistochemical criteria to be consi

Unilateral vocal cord paralysis may occur with trauma, neoplasms, mechanical or central nervous system dysfunction, or following extensive aortic and mediastinal vascular surgery or thyroidectomy. Thyroplasty type I is a form of laryngeal framework surgery (ie, phonosurgery) used to treat unilateral vocal cord paralysis. A silicone implant is placed inside a surgically created window in the thyroid cartilage and pushes the paralyzed cord medially, allowing the moving cord to touch the paralyzed cord and close the opening. The procedure is performed under monitored local anesthesia with sedatio

Fifty-four ill or nonproductive lemmings (Dicrostonyx spp.) were evaluated for signs, lesions and causes of disease for 5 yr in a domestic colony. Parasitic granulomas caused by Encephalitozoon cuniculi were the most common finding and were seen in 22 lemmings. The disease was characterized by circling and torticollis with granulomas in many tissues, especially the central nervous system. Suppurative otitis occurred in 12 lemmings and was associated with Klebsiella pneumonia infection; circling was the common sign. Hepatic microabscesses were present in seven lemmings but a cause was not ident

Radionuclide and computed tomographic (CT) scanning was performed for the long-term follow-up of 63 patients who had been treated for primary intracranial central nervous system tumors. This group included 23 children with supratentorial lesions and 40 with infratentorial lesions. The results of imaging were correlated with clinical assessment and the results of cytologic evaluation of the cerebrospinal fluid and, when available, surgical or autopsy findings. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of both CT and radionuclide scanning were evaluated for each type of tumor.

Extra-axial ependymomas are exceedingly rare neuroectodermal tumors that arise outside the central nervous system. The majority behave in a benign clinical fashion. In this case, an elderly woman developed an intraperitoneal ependymoma that after surgical excision recurred twice over a period of twenty four years. At each presentation, the tumor demonstrated identical histologic appearances with prominent rosettes as well as perivascular pseudorosettes. Immunohistochemistry showed strong positivity for glial fibrilary acidic protein, estrogen receptors, CAM 5.2 and CD99 with weak staining for

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Perineurioma, a rare benign nerve sheath neoplasm occurring in either an intraneural or soft tissue form, has never been reported to arise in the central nervous system.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We describe the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of a perineurioma arising in the choroid plexus of the third ventricle in a 65-year-old woman and causing obstructive hydrocephalus.
INTERVENTION: The lesion, apparently unassociated with a nerve, was gross totally resected by frontal craniotomy using a left-sided transcallosal approach. Short-term follow-up sho

A malignant lymphoma developed in the central nervous system (CNS) of a 7-year-old boy 5 years after he had received chemotherapy and cranial irradiation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Bone marrow analysis of the original leukemia showed a pre-B cell phenotype, whereas the resected brain tumor showed a T cell phenotype on immunophenotypic analysis. Because of this difference in immunophenotype, and because the patient had received multiple-drug chemotherapy and 1,800 cGy of cranial irradiation for the original ALL, we consider that the malignant lymphoma was a second neoplasm. This is

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors represent an expansive group of neoplasms that share an etiology of epithelial origin with neuroendocrine differentiation. Poorly-differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas behave similarly to their aggressive pulmonary counterpart, small cell lung carcinoma. Most patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors present with symptoms of metastasis, most commonly to the liver. There have been no case reports, to our knowledge, until now that demonstrate metastasis to the central nervous system.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male with poorly-differen

HIV infected macrophages infiltrate the nervous system early in the progression of HIV infection, leading to a complex set of neuropathological alterations including HIV encephalitis (HIVE), leukoencephalopathy and vacuolar myelopathy that in turn result in neurodegeneration of selective cellular populations and pathways involved in regulating cognitive and motor functioning. Rapid progress in the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has changed the patterns of HIV related neuropathology and neurological manifestations in the past 10 years. The prevalence of opportunisti

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the causes of death and compute the risk of mortality due to each cause among patients with malignant adrenal tumours.
METHODS: Data from malignant adrenal tumour patients were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2004-2020). With reference data from the general population, the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated to assess all causes of death for malignant adrenal tumour patients.
RESULTS: A total of 1651 patients who died from primary malignant adrenal neoplasms were included; 854 cases of a

OBJECT: To establish a human monocytic leukemia model with central nervous system infiltration in BALB/c nude mice.
METHODS: BALB/c nu/nu mice, pretreated by splenectomy, cytoxan intraperitoneal injection, and sublethal irradiation, were transplanted intravenously with human monocytic leukemic cell line SHI-1. The leukemic cells engrafted in the mice were traced by RT-PCR, histopathological examination, immunohistochemistry and FCM.
RESULT: After engraftment of SHI-1 cells in SCI-nu/nu mice, multiple organs were involved and green solid neoplasms were formed in some organs. Paralysis was dev

BACKGROUND: Primary melanocytic tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare neoplasms that range from benign melanocytomas to aggressive malignant melanomas. Although meningeal melanocytomas are generally considered indolent lesions, malignant transformation and distant metastasis can occur.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 33-year-old male with a bulbopontine meningeal melanocytoma who developed systemic metastases, culminating in a fatal outcome. Despite initial histopathologic features of benignity and absence of BRAF mutation, the lesion showed aggressive behavior.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic origin. They commonly arise from visceral pleura, but also arise from nonserosal sites such as meninges, central nervous system parenchyma, and spinal cord. In the spinal cord, SFTs commonly arise from the thoracic spinal cord, followed by cervical spinal cord, lumbar spinal cord, and sacrum. Histologically, SFTs can be similar to hemangiopericytoma, schwannoma, fibrous meningioma, fibroma, gliofibroma, and ependymoma. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) plays an important role in differentiating SFTs from other identical tum

In the normal adult brain, blood vessel formation is tightly down-regulated. However, pathologic processes such as brain tumors can increase the proportion of endothelial cells involved in angiogenesis. When this process is initiated, a complex series of timed events result in new vessel formation. In this review, we will describe the process of angiogenesis in the central nervous system. We will discuss the roles of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), Angiopoietins, Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), and integrins in angiogenesis. We will also look i

Dissemination of gliomas outside the central nervous system without preceding neurosurgery is a rare phenomenon. Glial neoplasms presenting as bone lesions are even more rare. A case of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) with initial presentation in the orbit following a single generalized seizure is described. Signs of intracranial hypertension resulted from subarachnoid tumor invasion. The patient was treated with whole-dose radiation therapy but survived for only 6 months following the initial presentation. An autopsy revealed a right temporal GBM with extensive subarachnoid spread and invasion

Hemangiopericytoma in the central nervous system is a rare tumor occurring predominantly in supratentorial sites. Classification may be confusing because the tumor may mimic the histological pattern of other vascular neoplasms. The particular feature of hemangiopericytoma are pericytes of blood vessels; they distinguish it as a separate and distinct tumor. The case of a 3 3/4-year-old child with a 3 3/4-year course is reported with a tumor in the middle fossa, the diencephalon, and the brainstem. The cystic tumor was resected twice. The child is presently alive with neurological deficit. The c

This article is a brief review of the radiologic-pathologic correlation of central nervous lesions occurring in patients with AIDS. The major discussions of the imaging appearance and radiologic differential diagnosis have been presented elsewhere in this issue. Our emphasis is on the gross pathologic correlations that are only possible with autopsy materials. We will illustrate the opportunistic neoplasms such as primary CNS lymphoma. This article also discusses the imaging and pathology of the common opportunistic infections. Toxoplasmosis, an obligate intracellular protozoan, is the most co

Tumors of the pineal region are rare neoplasms accounting for only about 1% of all central nervous system tumors. This chapter details the histopathological features and molecular alterations of these tumors. The two most common types are germ cell tumors (GCTs) and pineal parenchymal tumors (PPTs). PPTs are a group of neoplasms that exhibit varying degrees of pinealocytic differentiation and diverse prognoses. They comprise well-differentiated low-grade pineocytomas, pineal parenchymal tumors of intermediate differentiation (PPTIDs), and poorly differentiated high-grade pineoblastomas (PBs).

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are type I interferon-producing cells that modulate immune responses. There are two types of pDC neoplasms: 1) mature pDC proliferation (MPDCP) associated with myeloid neoplasm and 2) blastic pDC neoplasm (BPDCN). MPDCP is a clonal expansion of mature pDCs that is predominantly associated with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. In contrast, BPDCN is a clinically aggressive myeloid malignancy involving the skin, bone marrow, lymphatic organs, and central nervous system. There are various types of skin lesions, ranging from solitary brown or violaceous to dissem
