The treatment of migraine in the Netherlands underwent important changes in the beginning of the 20th century. Several factors played a role, including the development of analgesics (acetylsalicylic acid, phenacetin, and fampridine++) at the end of the 19th century. BACKGROUND: To assess cesarean section-related maternal mortality in The Netherlands during 1983-1992.
METHODS: A nationwide confidential enquiry into the causes of maternal death.
RESULTS: The risk of dying after vaginal birth was 0.04 per 1000 vaginal births (65/1.763.999) compared to 0.53 per 1000 cesarean births (57/108.587). The direct risk of dying from cesarean section was 0.13 per 1000 operations (14/108.587). In some women cesarean section did not initiate, but contributed to, the train of events leading to death. OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) is associated with coeliac disease in a frequency of 0.4-2%. Since 1976, when general immunization against measles was introduced in the Netherlands, all new cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were registered and detailed data about immunization, epidemiology and disease progression were collected on them. Up to 1991, 99 new patients have been registered of which 81 were born in this country and 18 elsewhere. The national cervical cytology registry being developed in the Netherlands is described. A large-scale screening program for cervical cancer has been in effect since 1975 in the region of the cities of Nijmegen, Utrecht and Rotterdam.
