Parry-Romberg Syndrome Associated with Localized Scleroderma.

Parry-Romberg syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous disorder of unknown origin. It is characterized by progressive facial hemiatrophy and frequently overlaps with a condition known as linear scleroderma 'en coup de sabre'. Neurological involvement is frequently described in these patients, including migraine, facial pain and epilepsy, which represent the commonest neurological conditions, sometimes associated with brain abnormalities ipsilaterally to the skin lesions. We present a case of Parry-Romberg syndrome with neurological involvement in a patient with diagnosed localized scleroderma (morphe

[Sturge-Weber syndrome: about a case].

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) or encephalofacial angiomatosis is a rare neurocutaneous and congenital ocular syndrome. It can cause two malformations: congenital facial capillary planar angioma and leptomeningal venous-capillary angioma (most often parieto-occipital homolateral angioma). Neuroimaging, in particular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), plays an important role in the diagnosis, ideally before the occurrence of neuro-ocular complications. We report the case of a child in whom SWS was suspected based on facial angioma and pharmaco-resistant epilepsy.

Hypothalamic Glioma in a Patient With Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by vascular malformations involving brain, skin, and occasionally eyes. There is no recognized tumor predisposition in patients with SWS as there is with some other phakomatoses. We present a patient with SWS who developed a low-grade glioma (LGG). We hypothesize that there could be an association between SWS and LGG formation, noting that GNAQ mutations have been implicated in the underlying biology of both SWS and a subset of pediatric LGG. It is suggested that SWS may be a cancer predisposition syndrome.

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis: a review of its clinical pathology and neurosurgical indications.

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome whose hallmark lesions are benign lipomas of the brain and spinal cord. The authors present a case of a male infant with ECCL who had extensive brainstem and spinal cord lipomas. The management of this patient's hydrocephalus, cervicomedullary compression, tethered cord, and scoliosis over the course of his first 2 years of life is described. This case report and review of the literature is presented to provide a synopsis of the problems likely to be encountered by neurosurgeons who treat patients with this syndrome.

PHACE/S syndrome: a syndromic infantile segmental hemangioma.

PHACES syndrome is a neurocutaneous disorder characterized by posterior fossa brain malformations, hemangiomas, cardiac anomalies and coarctation of aorta, eye anomalies ± sternal clefts. All reported cases are sporadic and notably common in females. The underlying cause is unknown. Here is described, one of the twin baby with characteristic features of PHACE syndrome. The presence of large segmental hemangioma, especially on face should prompt the primary care provider to act early, to prevent complications related to facial hemangiomas and other associated anomalies.

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis: neurologic manifestations.

We report a new case of encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis, a rare neurocutaneous syndrome of unknown etiology with involvement of tissues arising from the mesoderm and ectoderm: skin, eye, adipose tissue, and brain. We also review the neurologic manifestations of the syndrome, the most frequent of which include seizures, ventricular enlargement, calcifications, mental retardation, and cerebellopontine angle tumor. Our patient had an extensive extradural spinal cord lipomatous lesion, emphasizing the importance of screening for spinal abnormalities in asymptomatic patients with this conditio

A unique case of PHACES syndrome confirming the assumption that PHACES syndrome and the sternal malformation-vascular dysplasia association are part of the same spectrum of malformations.

PHACES is an acronym for a rare neurocutaneous disorder including the following features: posterior fossa brain malformations; facial hemangiomas; arterial, cardiac, and eye anomalies; and sternal clefts and/or supraumbilical abdominal raphe. Facial hemangiomas are the hallmark of this syndrome. We report a patient with facial hemangiomas, sternal clefting and carotid abnormalities. She is another example of the combined existence of sternal clefting and carotid abnormalities in PHACES syndrome and even more unique since she does not have an aortic abnormality. This report emphasizes that many

An infantile case of Sturge-Weber syndrome in association with Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome and phakomatosis pigmentovascularis.

Sturge-Weber syndrome can be associated with facial port-wine stains and intracranial calcification, and concurrent Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome has been reported. Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome is a rare congenital mesodermal phakomatosis characterized by cutaneous hemangiomas, venous varicosities and soft tissue or bone hypertrophy of the affected extremities. This report is presented a rare case of the Sturge-Weber syndrome in combination with the Klippel-Trennaunay syndrome and phakomatosis pigmentovascularis in a 4-month-old infant. He showed nevus flameus on the right leg and both

Hypomelanosis of Ito: clinical syndrome or just phenotype?

The term hypomelanosis of Ito is applied to individuals with skin hypopigmentation along the lines of Blaschko. Even though originally described as a purely cutaneous disease, subsequent reports have included a 33% to 94% association with multiple extracutaneous manifestations mostly of the central nervous and musculoskeletal systems leading to frequent characterization as a neurocutaneous disorder. A number of reports claimed familial occurrence and supported single gene inheritance for hypomelanosis of Ito, but none has been proved. Miscellaneous chromosomal mosaicisms have been demonstrated

Agenesis of bilateral internal carotid arteries and posterior fossa abnormality in a patient with facial capillary hemangioma: presumed incomplete phenotypic expression of PHACE syndrome.

PHACE syndrome is a neurocutaneous syndrome with the following features: posterior fossa malformations of the brain, large facial hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, cardiac anomalies and aortic coarctation, and eye abnormalities. We report a rare case of bilateral internal carotid artery agenesis with transcranial collaterals from the external carotid arteries and agenesis of the vertebrobasilar system in a possible PHACE syndrome. We suggest that the patient had an incomplete phenotypic expression of the PHACE syndrome. Although the phenotypic spectrum is broad and is still largely unexplored,

Neurocutaneous melanosis associated with Hirschsprung's disease in a male neonate.

Hirschsprung's disease is an inherited disorder characterized by the absence of ganglion cells in the distal bowel. Neurocutaneous melanosis is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by proliferation of melanin-producing cells in the skin and leptomeninges. The authors described a newborn patient with neurocutaneous melanosis associated with Hirschsprung's disease. This male baby had congenital hydrocephalus, large and multiple pigmented skin nevi, and severe abdominal distension. He showed marked hydrocephalus at birth and underwent a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt at the age of 5 days. Invest

Neurocutaneous melanocytosis.

Neurocutaneous melanosis or neurocutaneous melanocytosis is a rare sporadic congenital disorder characterized by the presence of giant and/or multiple satellite congenital melanocytic nevi in the skin and benign melanocytic pigmentation of the leptomeninges. These two defining features were recognized more than a century ago. A third characteristic feature is proliferative nodules arising from giant nevi. The etiology is unknown, but neurocutaneous melanosis is considered a developmental disorder of melanocyte precursors from neural crest. The distinctive unique distribution of the congenital

Speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome: report of a further case.

A 42-year-old man had a large speckled lentiginous nevus on the left side of his trunk. The involved area was painful when touched and paresthetic. Moreover, the ipsilateral half of his body showed a pronounced hyperhidrosis. This case can be categorized as a typical example of speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome, a recently recognized phenotype characterized by a speckled lentiginous nevus of the papular type and ipsilateral neurological abnormalities in the form of dysesthesia, muscular weakness or hyperhidrosis. Speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome represents a mosaic phenotype. Most likely
