Documenta ophthalmologica. Advances in ophthalmology1976eng
This is a review of primary and secondary tumors of the optic nerve. The emphasis is an optic nerve gliomas and meningiomas. Optic nerve gliomas are slowly growing astrocytic neoplasms of the anterior visual pathways, the majority of which occur within the first two decades of life, with equal sex incidence in about 1 of 200,000 patients presenting with eye complaints. The incidence is greater in neurofibromatosis. The typical presentation is visual impairment in a verbal pre-school child with optic canal enlargement and optic atrophy. An intraorbital location of the tumor leads to axial, irre

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) encompass a wide and unusual group of neoplasms with features of neural differentiation. They most commonly present as spindle cell neoplasms and it can be difficult to differentiate them from other spindle cell neoplasms such as leiomyosarcomas, fibrosarcomas and synovial sarcomas. Strict criteria need to be applied in order to make the diagnosis of MPNSTs. Helpful features include contiguity with a nerve or an association with von Recklinghausen disease. The use of immunohistochemical stains may also help to confirm the diagnosis. Markers suc

BACKGROUND: The onset of progressive cerebellar ataxia in early childhood is considered a key feature of ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), accompanied by ocular apraxia, telangiectasias, immunodeficiency, cancer susceptibility and hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation.
METHODS: We describe the clinical features and course of three Mennonite children who were diagnosed with A-T following the completion of therapy for lymphoid malignancies.
RESULTS: Prior to cancer therapy, all had non-progressive atypical neurological abnormalities, with onset by age 30 months, including dysarthria, dyskinesia, h

AIMS: Sacrococcygeal teratomas are rare tumours that occur most frequently in neonates, although adult cases also occur. The molecular pathogenesis of these tumours and their long-term prognosis is uncertain. We investigated the i(12p) status of a large number of primary sacrococcygeal teratomas in both children and adults, including cases with malignant germ cell tumour elements.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-four sacrococcygeal teratoma specimens from 52 patients were identified, and available follow-up information was obtained. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization analysis was performed to iden

OBJECTIVE: Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant bone tumor occurring most frequently in the long bones and flat bones as a solitary lesion during the first 2 decades of life. Ewing's sarcoma and peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor have recently been considered to be the same entity because of histological and molecular similarities.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old man presented with swelling in the right parietal region. Magnetic resonance imaging scans showed 2 mixed intense mass lesions in the right parietal and left frontal areas with heterogeneous gadolinium enhancement. A computed

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric Ewing sarcoma (ES)/primitive neuro-ectodermal tumor (PNET) occurring in the genitourinary system has been rarely reported. And the result of long-term follow-up is still a matter of debate.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify the characteristics, therapeutic strategies, and long-term outcomes of pediatric ES/PNET in the genitourinary system.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All children with genitourinary system PNET from a single center were retrospectively reviewed. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system was used to evaluate tumor grade.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is presumably of neural crest origin, and cases of supratentorial PNET in adult are extremely rare. We reported a case of PNET presenting as a dumbbell-shaped tumor at the middle cranial fossa of skull base mimicking trigeminal schwannoma both clinically and radiologically. The patient underwent surgery on July 13, 2010, using a combination of subtemporal, pterional and retrosigmoid approaches, to achieve decompression and obtain a histological diagnosis. The patient worsened neurologically two weeks after surgery. Her consciousness level became comatose

A 2-year-old boy presented with sudden blindness and epistaxis resulting from olfactory neuroblastoma with intracranial extension. This disease is uncommon in children, with only 27 cases reported in patients less than 17 years of age. This article reviews the clinical and histological features of this tumor and discusses treatment. Therapy has generally consisted of surgery and radiation. Our child and 2 others treated with radiation and combination chemotherapy (including cyclophosphamide and anthracyclines) have done well with follow-ups of up to 9 1/2 years. Chemotherapy is an important fo

While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is no longer a tool of the future, its availability is limited. Most hospitals still use high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scanning as their major imaging modality. Although numerous articles point to the improved diagnostic uses of MRI--as compared to high-resolution CT--a change from high-resolution CT scanning to MRI scanning throughout the United States would cost billions of dollars. We should, therefore, delineate those clinical situations in which magnetic resonance imaging is distinctly superior to high-resolution CT scanning. It is already

Nonepithelial malignant tumors of the pancreas are extremely rare neoplasms with a frequency of approximately 0.6%. They are always explored because of a suspected diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma. Amongst the more than 600 primary pancreatic neoplasms in our pancreatic tumor archive only 5 neoplasms were of nonepithelial origin (one was a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor [MPNST], one a leiomyosarcoma, one a malignant mesothelioma, and two were peripheral neuroectodermal tumors [PNET]. The differential diagnosis includes secondary infiltration of the pancreas by mesenchymal tumors of t

PURPOSE: Ewing Sarcoma/Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor (ES/PNET) is a malignant small round cell tumor belonging to the Ewing Sarcoma Family of Tumors. It occurs more commonly in children and young adults. Its localization in the adrenal gland is extremely rare. We reviewed 35 cases of ES/PNET of the adrenal gland reported in the literature and presented our case.
METHODS: Data were collected by searching for ES/PNET and adrenal gland key words on Google Scholar and PubMed in March 2018, including a case diagnosed in our department. We analyzed all reviewed cases for diagnosis, surgical and s

Two genital cases of Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor in 14 and 15 year old teenagers are reported. They arose in uteri and vulva, as small round cell tumors with some rosette-like formations and intense membranous immunoreactivity for CD99. The EWS/FLI-1 transcript was present in the vulvar tumor. Under chemotherapy, uterine tumor outcome was fatal within 9 months. The vulvar lesion was treated by surgery and chemotherapy, without relapse after 7 months. Likewise to these 2 cases, the literature seems to indicate different prognosis for uterine and vulvar tumors.

Five patients with tumors in the anterior skull base were surgically treated using the transbasal approach, which permits removal of the tumor, repair of the dura mater, and reconstruction of the skull base in a one-stage procedure. By using autologous materials for the bone graft and pedunculated pericranial flap for the reconstruction, the intracranial structures are separated from the air-filled nasal and paranasal cavities. No postoperative complications such as wound infection and leakage of cerebrospinal fluid were encountered. The use of this surgical technique makes it possible to exti

BACKGROUND: No previous reports to date have characterized the national profiles of soft-tissue sarcomas (STSs). In the present study, we reviewed current practice for STSs in Japan using data from a nationwide organ-specific cancer registry for bone and soft-tissue tumors in Japan, the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor (BSTT) Registry.
METHODS: In the registry, we identified 8228 patients with STSs during the period 2006-2012, and extracted data on patient demographics, treatment, and outcome at the last follow-up for each patient. Disease-specific survival was analyzed using the Cox proportional h

AIM: FDG-PET(/CT) is frequently used in surveillance of Ewing sarcoma (ES) patients. Since ES and PNET (primitive neuroectodermal tumours) may cause peripheral metastases some centers routinely recommend whole body PET acquisition from head to toe what may necessitate repositioning of the patient and thus extending examination time. It is not clear yet whether inclusion of lower leg adds to the diagnostic accuracy of PET scanning, especially in primary tumors of the trunk.
PATIENTS, METHOD: 40 patients with ES and PNET of the trunk who were referred for surveillance after primary therapy with

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy who presented to our community-based Pediatric Emergency Department with complaints of neck pain, stiffness and upper extremity weakness. The symptoms were later identified to be due to cervical extraosseous paraspinal Ewing's sarcoma. The patient had a fatally aggressive clinical course. Cervical extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma is rarely reported in pediatrics. Ewing's sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of children presenting with complaints of unremitting or recurring non-specific back or neck pain or neurological deficits. Appropri
