Predicting Meningioma Consistency on Preoperative Neuroimaging Studies.

This article provides an overview of the neuroimaging literature focused on preoperative prediction of meningioma consistency. A validated, noninvasive neuroimaging method to predict tumor consistency can provide valuable information regarding neurosurgical planning and patient counseling. Most of the neuroimaging literature indicates conventional MRI using T2-weighted imaging may be helpful to predict meningioma consistency; however, further rigorous validation is necessary. Much less is known about advanced MRI techniques, such as diffusion MRI, MR elastography (MRE), and MR spectroscopy. Of

The Washington University Central Neuroimaging Data Archive.

Since the early 2000's, much of the neuroimaging work at Washington University (WU) has been facilitated by the Central Neuroimaging Data Archive (CNDA), an XNAT-based imaging informatics system. The CNDA is uniquely related to XNAT, as it served as the original codebase for the XNAT open source platform. The CNDA hosts data acquired in over 1000 research studies, encompassing 36,000 subjects and more than 60,000 imaging sessions. Most imaging modalities used in modern human research are represented in the CNDA, including magnetic resonance (MR), positron emission tomography (PET), computed to

[Gambling addiction: insights from neuroscience and neuroimaging].

Although most people consider gambling as a recreational activity, some individuals lose control over their behavior and enter a spiral of compulsive gambling leading to dramatic consequences. In its most severe form, pathological gambling is considered a behavioral addiction sharing many similarities with substance addiction. A number of neurobiological hypotheses have been investigated in the past ten years, relying mostly on neuroimaging techniques. Similarly to substance addiction, a number of observations indicate a central role for dopamine in pathological gambling. However, the underlyi

Neuroimaging and clinical characterization of Sotos syndrome.

Sotos syndrome is a well-known overgrowth syndrome characterized by excessive growth during childhood, macrocephaly, distinctive facial appearance and learning disability. This disorder is caused by mutations or deletions in NSD1 gene. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the neuroimaging and clinical features of children with Sotos syndrome. Six Turkish children with Sotos syndrome were followed up about 3-7 years. The diagnosis was confirmed with molecular genetic analysis. We identified the pathogenic NSD1 mutation including three novel in all patients. All the patie

Neuropsychiatric deep brain stimulation for translational neuroimaging.

From a neuroimaging point of view, deep brain stimulation (DBS) in psychiatric disorders represents a unique source of information to probe results gained in functional, structural and molecular neuroimaging studies in vivo. However, the implementation has, up to now, been restricted by the heterogeneity of the data reported in DBS studies. The aim of the present study was therefore to provide a comprehensive and standardized database of currently used DBS targets in selected psychiatric disorders (obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), treatment-resistant depression (TRD), Gilles de la Tourette

Neuroimaging in childhood headache: a systematic review.

Headache is a common complaint in children, one that gives rise to considerable parental concern and fear of the presence of a space-occupying lesion. The evaluation and diagnosis of headache is very challenging for paediatricians, and neuroimaging by means of CT or MRI is often requested as part of the investigation. CT exposes children to radiation, while MRI is costly and sometimes requires sedation or general anaesthesia, especially in children younger than 6 years. This review of the literature on the value of neuroimaging in children with headache showed that the rate of pathological fin

Thunderclap headache: diagnostic considerations and neuroimaging features.

Thunderclap headache (TCH) is an acute and severe headache that has maximum intensity at onset; TCH can be primary or secondary. Primary TCH is diagnosed when no underlying cause is discovered; however, imaging is crucial in distinguishing secondary causes, which are wide-ranging. The radiologist should be aware of the list of potential diagnoses. Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is the most common cause of secondary TCH. Aneurysmal SAH accounts for the majority of cases, although other causes should also be considered and these include perimesencephalic haemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations,

Immunological and neuroimaging biomarkers of complicated grief.

Complicated grief (CG) is a disorder marked by intense and persistent yearning for the deceased, in addition to other criteria. The present article reviews what is known about the immunologic and neuroimaging biomarkers of both acute grief and CG, Attachment theory and cognitive stress theory are reviewed as they pertain to bereavement, as is the biopsychosocial model of CG. Reduced immune cell function has been replicated in a variety of bereaved populations. The regional brain activation to grief cues frequently includes the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and insula, and also the posterior

Neuroimaging of child abuse: a critical review.

Childhood maltreatment is a stressor that can lead to the development of behavior problems and affect brain structure and function. This review summarizes the current evidence for the effects of childhood maltreatment on behavior, cognition and the brain in adults and children. Neuropsychological studies suggest an association between child abuse and deficits in IQ, memory, working memory, attention, response inhibition and emotion discrimination. Structural neuroimaging studies provide evidence for deficits in brain volume, gray and white matter of several regions, most prominently the dorsol

Normal neuroimaging in early-onset Krabbe disease.

Krabbe disease has characteristic findings on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) according to age of clinical onset. MRI-negative Krabbe disease has not been reported in early-onset cases. We present the serial clinical and MRI of brain findings in a case of early-onset Krabbe disease with proven enzyme deficiency. Despite clinical progression, the MRI findings of the child remained normal over a period of 15 months.

Neuroimaging of Dandy-Walker malformation: new concepts.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is the most common human cerebellar malformation, characterized by hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilation of the fourth ventricle, and an enlarged posterior fossa with upward displacement of the lateral sinuses, tentorium, and torcular. Although its pathogenesis is not completely understood, there are several genetic loci related to DWM as well as syndromic malformations and congenital infections. Dandy-Walker malformation is associated with other central nervous system abnormalities, including dysgenesis of corpus callosum, ectopic brain tissue, h

[New perspectives on Alzheimer's disease from neuroimaging].

INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Over the next 50 years, the proportion of the population over the age of 65 will increase dramatically, and the number of individuals with neurodegenerative dementias such as Alzheimer's disease will rise, as well. Current pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment strategies have focused on the symptomatic phases of Alzheimer's disease, but with the ability to identify the disease earlier in its clinical course comes an increased under-standing of the factors that alter the risk of expressing the clinical syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Neuroimaging studies are no
