The following communication summarizes the proceedings of a one-day International Workshop focusing on the histology of benign melanocytic nevi. Areas of controversy identified in 6 focus sessions were the nomenclature and relationships among common nevi including nevi with halo reactions, traumatized nevi, "dysplastic" nevi, and nevi from particular anatomic sites; developmental biology and frequency of malignant transformation associated with congenital nevi; the characterization and biologic nature of atypical spitzoid neoplasms; the basic definition of particular melanocytic cellular pheno

Dermoscopy is a very useful technique for the analysis of pigmented skin lesions. It represents a link between clinical and histological views, permitting an earlier diagnosis of skin melanoma. It also helps in the diagnosis of many other pigmented skin lesions, such as seborrheic keratosis, pigmented basal cell carcinoma, hemangioma, blue nevus, atypical nevus, and mole, which can often clinically simulate melanoma. In this article, dermoscopy is reviewed from its history to the basic concepts of the interpretation of dermoscopic images. The goal is to introduce this subject to those not yet

Bean syndrome or blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disease characterized by venous malformations (VM) of the skin, soft tissues and visceral organs, most frequently affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. BRBNS is mainly sporadic but can be inherited in an autosomal pattern. The most common symptoms are GI bleeding and secondary iron deficiency anemia. Treatment is largely symptomatic.

Dermal melanocytosis refers to congenital or acquired lesions characterized by the presence of dendritic cells derived from melanocytes that migrate from the neural crest to the epidermis. The nevus of Ito develops in the territory supplied by the acromioclavicular nerve. Malignant transformation in dermal melanocytosis is extremely rare, with only isolated case reports; only 2 cases of malignant transformation of a nevus of Ito have been reported. We report a very rare case that is the third to be described in the literature. The patient was a 24-year-old man who presented with a subcutaneous

The third case of melanosis of the exocervix reported in the English literature is presented. Discovery was incidental at surgery for unrelated findings. The pathogenesis of melanosis is unknown, but the lesion apparently is innocuous. Biopsy should distinguish this entity from other pigmented lesions of the cervix, eg, malignant melanoma and blue nevus.

This article presents the clinical features of a spectrum of pigmented lesions. It begins with benign lesions that may be confused with melanocytic nevi, such as lentigines, seborrheic keratoses, and dermatofibromas. The next section focuses on the various types of melanocytic nevi, including congenital, blue, and Spitz nevi. A description of atypical nevi is provided, followed by an outline of the clinical characteristics of each subtype of cutaneous melanoma. The clinical characteristics of various pigmented lesions are illustrated.

Melanoma incidence has increased approximately 6-fold over the past 40 years, driven primarily by melanoma in situ and thin invasive melanomas, which are among the most subjective lesions to diagnose on histopathology. This review examines whether genomics clarifies the "gray zone" between benign and malignant pigmented lesions, or instead recasts existing histopathologic ambiguity in molecular terms, while also considering whether genomic classification shifts overdiagnosis upstream instead of resolving underlying diagnostic uncertainty. Across cytogenetic, mutation-based, and gene-expression

OBJECTIVE: To explore the diagnosis and treatment of divided nevus of the penis (DNP) in children.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on a case of DNP treated by surgical resection and transplantation of free skin graft of the inner preputial plate, and searched PubMed, CNKI and Wanfang database prior to March 2021 for relevant literature, followed by analysis of the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of DNP.
RESULTS: The free skin graft on the left side of the glans survived well. Postoperative pathology showed the DNP to be a complex pigmented nevus. The

Large congenital melanocytic nevus has a high risk of malignancy. However, few studies have summarized its characteristics, treatments, outcomes and malignancy incidence in Chinese patients. This paper reviews a retrospective cohort study evaluating 1,171 patients from Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital between 1 January 1989 and 31 August 2019 using electronic medical records and phone calls to collect clinical and pathological data in which 133 patients were diagnosed with a large congenital melanocytic nevus. Three patients relapsed, and none developed melanoma among the qualified patients. B

Pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma (PEM) is a tumor encompassing epithelioid blue nevus of Carney complex (EBN of CNC) and was previously termed animal-type melanoma. Histologically PEMs are heavily pigmented spindled and epithelioid dermal melanocytic tumors with infiltrative borders, however, their origin remains unclear. Stem cells for the epidermis and hair follicle are located in the bulge area of the hair follicle with the potential to differentiate into multiple lineages. Multiple cutaneous carcinomas, including follicular cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (FSCC), are thought to arise f

41 patients with benign focal melanotic lesions on the oral mucosa were studied. The results showed that among the patients, 27 were female and 14 male, the mean age was 33 years old, and the most common site was the lip and gingiva. Clinically, the lesions were focal and well-defined, the size was about 0.6 cm in diameter. Histologically, 21 cases were pigmented nuvus on the oral mucosa (18 cases with nevocellular nevus and 3 cases with the common blue nevus), 2 cases were junctional change, 5 cases were the lentigo simplex, and 13 cases were oral melanotic macule. Parenteral gold has historically been used to treat several conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. Gold administration leads to a variety of cutaneous reactions, including chrysiasis, which is a permanent blue-grey hyperpigmentation of the skin due to dermal gold deposition. In this report, we describe the case of a patient who received parenteral gold injections 22 years before the onset of her chrysiasis for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Biopsy of the macules showed dermal gold deposits aggregating around a melanocytic nevus, as well as around preexisting osteoma cutis. To the

Nevus of Ota is a benign pigmentation disorder that commonly affects areas of the skin and eyes innervated by the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the trigeminal nerve. It typically presents as blue-black or gray macules, mainly in individuals with darker skin tones, and can cause significant cosmetic concerns. Treatment options include cryotherapy, dermabrasion, and laser therapy, with the Q-switched (QS) Nd:YAG (1064 nm) laser emerging as a promising option. This report describes the case of a 25-year-old woman diagnosed with unilateral nevus of Ota. After clinical examination, the patie

The lack of effective therapies for patients with advanced melanoma establishes an early recognition as the aim of clinical and dermoscopic examination, which is the most important factor for improving patient survival and decreases the treatment and management costs. Melanoma in situ is the earliest stage of melanoma. The features of early melanomas, especially in those lesions smaller than 3mm, can be very subtle clinically, dermoscopically and pathohistologically, and it is often impossible to discriminate between a melanoma and nevus. Clinically, de novo melanomas are small brown to black

BACKGROUND: Nevus spilus (NS) is a congenital melanocytic nevus with specific clinical characteristics. The condition generally appears in the first year of life and shows no gender preference while affecting individuals with lighter skin tones. It has a predilection for lower limbs and trunk areas the NS lesions consist of tiny heavily pigmented papules and macules accumulated on a well-bordered, lighter brown macular backdrop, comparable to a café-au-lait macule, frequently along Blaschko lines. The type of nevus has been reported as a blue nevus, centrofacial lentiginosis, nevus sebaceous,

A 2-month-old boy was presented with widespread lateralized blue macules (nevus cesius), an extensive nevus flammeus, and large patches of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita. Moreover, he had macrocephaly, a coarse facial appearance with depressed nasal bridge, retinal abnormalities, septal defects of the heart, and obliteration of the left brachiocephalic vein and major veins of the left arm with pronounced collateralization. The multisystem disorder of this boy cannot be categorized within the present classification of distinct types of phacomatosis pigmentovascularis. Although some s

Spark's nevus is a particular type of melanocytic nevus, with histology that shows features of both Spitz and Clark nevus. Detailed dermoscopic features in a series of Spark nevi have not been described yet. We performed a monocentric retrospective observational study on 20 lesions of Spark nevus excised from 19 patients (M:F = 10:9; mean age: 37,6 years), reviewed by 5 experts in dermoscopy and 2 dermatopathologists. A histologic review confirmed that Spark nevi were mostly symmetric (80%), well circumscribed (100%), mainly compound (65%) melanocytic lesions with either epithelioid (55%) or s

Dermal melanocytosis is characterized by the presence of spindle-shaped melanocytes in the dermis. The most common form is Mongolian spots. A 15-month-old girl from Azerbaijan had a systematized dark blue-gray hyperpigmentation on her shoulder, back and extremities. The hyperpigmentation was also found on both sclera and choroidal areas, without any other facial involvement. On histopathological examination, dense melanocytes were found on the intermediate and deep dermis. Her physical and mental development was normal. This association of blue macules and involvement of both sclerae does not

Peripherin is an intermediate filament involved in growth and development of the peripheral nervous system and is localized to neurons, some other cells derived from neural tube and neural crest, and some neuroendocrine cells (e.g. beta cells of islets of Langerhans). Peripherin also has been demonstrated in neuroblastomas and cutaneous neuroendocrine (Merkel cell) carcinomas. The expression of peripherin by other cells derived from the neural crest is unknown. We evaluated by immunohistochemistry 74 cutaneous melanocytic lesions including primary invasive malignant melanoma (IMM), melanoma in
