Occupational exposure and sensitization to fungi among museum workers.

BACKGROUND: Museum employees are exposed to fungi and storage mites in the workplace. AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of sensitization to moulds, as well as clinical symptoms associated with allergy in museum workers. METHODS: A total of 103 employees of the Polish National Museum (NM) in Warsaw, potentially exposed to fungi during their work, were assessed using a questionnaire and skin prick tests to common allergens and fungal extracts. The level of total and serum-specific IgE to moulds was evaluated, and spirometry was performed in all subjects. Mycological analysis of

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and occupational exposure to silica.

Prolonged exposure to high levels of silica has long been known to cause silicosis This paper evaluates the evidence for an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in occupations and industries in which exposure to crystalline silica is the primary exposure, with a focus on the magnitude of risks and levels of exposure causing disabling health effects. The literature suggests consistently elevated risks of developing COPD associated with silica exposure in several occupations, including the construction industry; tunneling; cement industry; brick manufacturing; pottery a

Cardiac damage secondary to occupational exposure to tin vapor.

Tin is commonly used as a coating on copper kitchen appliances, and "tinsmithing" as a trade is common in many non-Western countries, where cooking utensils are re-tinned when the cooking surface wears thin. Tinsmiths, or "tinkers," are commonly exposed to the following fumes during their work: stannic [tin(IV)] oxide, ammonium chloride, and hydrochloric acid. In this study we assessed workers from tinsmith workshops of our province for signs, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of cardiac end-organ damage. Between June 2002 and March 2003, researchers went to the main tinsmith workshop area of

[Toxic anosmia and rhinitis due to occupational solvent exposure].

A patient's case report documents the development of anosmia and rhinitis caused by occupational exposure to organic solvents, including tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone, acetone and other ketones. Physicians should inquire about possible mucosal irritation or prenarcotic symptoms during exposure. If an occupational disease is assumed, notification must be sent to the Institution for Statutory Accident Insurance and Prevention (Berufsgenossenschaft). Some diseases, for example olfactory disorders due to chemical mixtures, are not included in the German list of occupational diseases. In this case

Allergic contact dermatitis from occupational exposure to ranitidine hydrochloride.

Contact sensitivity to ranitidine hydrochloride has been demonstrated in 6 of 8 symptomatic exposed pharmaceutical manufacturing employees; a 7th has been found to be sensitized to ranitidine base. Although closed manufacturing processes diminish the risk of such sensitization, operatives with potential exposure should be made aware of the importance of avoiding skin contact.

Bleeding problems associated with occupational exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides.

OBJECTIVE: Sporadic reports have occurred on adverse health effects due to occupational exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides. We report a case of coagulation derangement in a pest-control officer and present the results of a survey of his colleagues. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 48-year-old man worked as a part-time pest-control officer applying rodenticides 3 h a week using gloves, but no mask, and without washing his hands between applications. He developed a symptomatic coagulation disturbance, probably caused by absorption of the poisons during work. No signs of coagulopathy were found in the

[Granulomatous lung lesions after occupational exposure to glass fibers].

39 years old man with granulomatous lesions in both lungs caused by occupational contact with glass fibers was described. He has been working as an bricklayer-plasterer for 18 years and was in contact with lime, cement, plaster, asbestos, dust of coal and wood and with glass fibers. For the last two years before admission in 1993 he has had frequent bronchial infections. On admission he was in good general condition, his spirometric examination and blood gases were within normal limits. On chest x-ray disseminated lesions were found. Those lesions were of the round shapes on chest CT. Many spu

Exposure to benzene, occupational stress, and reduced birth weight.

OBJECTIVES: The association between birth weight and exposure to benzene, work stress, and other occupational and environmental hazards was investigated. METHODS: In a large petrochemical industry, 792 pregnant workers were enrolled and followed up through delivery between May 1996 and December 1998. Exposure to benzene and other solvents was assessed by an industrial hygienist based on each woman's job title and workplace information. Other occupational and environmental exposures and personal information, including perceived work stress, exposure to noise, physical exertion at work, and pas

Occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation: a health risk assessment.

This review applies health risk assessment methodology to the subject of occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Ultraviolet radiation is produced by many sources, and for most people the sun is their main source of exposure. In the occupational environment, there are also many artificial sources, of which welding arcs are the predominant and most intense. Adverse health effects include photokeratitis, erythema, pterygium, some types of cataract, non-melanocytic skin cancer, and malignant melanoma. Outdoor workers and workers who are exposed to certain artificial sources (particu

[Prophylaxis after occupational exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)].

Reasons for seeking consultation among health care workers due to potential or supposed risk of HIV infection were analyzed. From August 1990 till July 1996 41 health care providers were consulted including: 22 nurses, 1 student of nursing college, 3 midwives, 4 laboratory workers and 7 physicians (surgeons and gynaecologist). Type of exposure to HIV and applying of safety precautions were evaluated in each case. In 10 cases the offer of postexposure prophylaxis with zidovudine was accepted (6 nurses, 1 student of nursing college, 3 surgeons). Exposure to HIV was described as: needlestick imme

Occupational exposure to dust: inflammation and ischaemic heart disease.

OBJECTIVES: To review the possible association between occupational exposure to dust and ischaemic heart disease (IHD). METHODS: A literature search was performed of relevant studies regarding IHD in specific exposures to dust. The chosen exposures were arsenic, asbestos, beryllium, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and quartz. The chosen occupations were farmers, paper and paper pulp workers, sawyers, and welders. DISCUSSION: A theory was launched in 1995 that urban particulate air pollution may provoke alveolar inflammation, with release of mediators capable of increasing blood coagu

Cardiovascular disease and occupational exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Results of chemical analysis, animal experiments, and human studies are reviewed, criticized, and found not to support claims of an association between workers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and occupational coronary heart disease. This review also recommends refinement of the use of dose surrogates, as presently practiced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for regulating indoor emissions from combustion engines, coal furnaces, tobacco leaf processing, rayon viscose manufacturing, and rubber curing. The work standards OSHA uses for regulation of these co

Interstitial pulmonary disease induced by occupational exposure to paraffin.

An occupational interstitial pulmonary disease was observed in a 59-year-old workman after five years of massive exposure to aerosolized paraffin. Histologic studies of open-lung biopsy showed a lipoid pneumonia characterized by (1) alveolitis involving large lipid-laden macrophages and (2) interstitial fibrosis. Electron microscopy of AMs disclosed features of paraffin-laden cytoplasmic vacuoles. Successive treatments included prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. Despite these treatments and withdrawal from exposure, the pulmonary function became impaired progressively, resulting in restrictive

Occupational noise exposure during pregnancy: a case control study.

The possible effects of occupational noise on human pregnancy were examined in a case-control study. The case groups consisted of 284 women with premature deliveries and of 299 women with full-term, low birth weight infants (below the 25th centile), each case having a matched pair. The whole material, all cases and controls included, comprised 1166 women. The percentage of employment in the whole material was 77.8; there were no differences between the case women and their controls. Rather few women (N = 26; 3.5%) reported occupational noise (greater than or equal to 81 dB; Leq(A)8h) during th

Clinical examinations and audiograms were conducted in a group of 249 men working in a foundry of the Paris area. Before and after adjustment for age, systolic blood pressure levels were positively associated with the duration of the occupational exposure to a noise greater than 85 dBA: 127.8 mmHg in the non-exposed group, 128.6 mmHg when the exposure lasted less than 10 years, 130.1 mmHg from 10 to 19 years, and 140.1 mmHg over 20 years (p less than 0.001). The odds-ratio of arterial hypertension associated with an occupational exposure over 20 years was 1.6 (p less than 0.05). There was no r

Occupational exposure to anticancer drug--potential and real hazards.

Many anticancer agents have been shown to be mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic in experimental systems and second malignancies are known to be associated with several specific therapeutic treatments. Anticancer agents thus represent a class of occupational carcinogens, the handling of which should involve no unnecessary exposure. The available methodologies to detect possible exposures from ambient air and from biological samples are discussed, and the published data on results are reviewed. Analytical methods are available for the detection of most frequently used anticancer drugs from

Initial occupational exposure to lead: Chromosome and Biochemical findings.

Serial chromosome and biochemical studies were carried out in 11 subjects before and during initial occupational exposure to moderate quantities of lead fumes in a storage battery plant. The rate of abnormal metaphases, mostly with chromatid and one-break chromosome aberrations, was approximately doubled after one month of work; it further increased after two months of work; remained in this range up to seven months of exposure; and then tended to decrease somewhat. Blood lead levels increased progressively in the first few months, then reached a steady state. Urinary lead and coproporphyrin l

Development of a Job-Exposure Matrix (AsbJEM) to Estimate Occupational Exposure to Asbestos in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational exposure data on asbestos are limited and poorly integrated in Australia so that estimates of disease risk and attribution of disease causation are usually calculated from data that are not specific for local conditions. OBJECTIVE: To develop a job-exposure matrix (AsbJEM) to estimate occupational asbestos exposure levels in Australia, making optimal use of the available exposure data. METHODS: A dossier of all available exposure data in Australia and information on industry practices and controls was provided to an expert panel consisting of three local industrial

Use of a job-exposure matrix to assess occupational exposures in relation to birth defects.

Accurate exposure assessment remains a challenge in occupational epidemiology. We evaluated one approach, use of a job-exposure matrix (JEM), by applying the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) JEM to a large case-control birth defects study that included parental occupation information. We investigated the JEM exposure predictions in several ways and found that for a substantial proportion of the parents in the birth defects study, the JEM yielded either no exposure data or nonsense predictions. Among exposure predictions that were plausible, most were of low probabi
