The skin and occupational diseases.

The skin is a major potential route for the absorption of hazardous materials encountered in the workplace. Percutaneous absorption is influenced by a large number of factors. In some situations, it may be the major route of absorption. Methods are available to determine this in industrial situations. Occupational dermatoses are the most frequent of all occupational diseases. Sources of information about these diseases are reviewed and limitations discussed. There is a particular need for analytic epidemiologic studies. In the case of occupational skin disease, such studies particularly need a

Determinants and prognosis of laryngeal cancer.

The evidence demonstrating the strong effects of tobacco and alcohol on laryngeal cancer risk is consistent and compelling. Furthermore, investigations indicate that joint exposures to tobacco and alcohol interact to elevate laryngeal cancer risk above what would be expected if these risk factors had merely additive effects. Occupational findings indicate that a few occupational groups may be facing a greater risk of laryngeal cancer from occupational exposures; this increased risk is not entirely due to alcohol drinking and smoking habits. All patients with laryngeal cancer are at higher risk

Work environment and occupational health of dental hygienists: a qualitative assessment.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize the work environment and identify factors that influence the occupational health of dental hygienists. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative analysis of dental hygiene work based on five national focus groups. RESULTS: We found that musculoskeletal symptoms are common, particularly after 10 years; common ergonomic problems included instruments and chairs. Important non-physical workplace problems include role ambiguity (eg, employee vs. independent practitioner), inadequate recognition, role identity (eg, distinction from dental assistants), role conflict (

The problem of human leptospirosis in Barbados.

The results of a retrospective study of human leptospirosis cases occurring in Barbados during the period 19-68-74, and of serological findings among high risk occupational groups, fever cases and health centre patients monitored for the disease during 1975-77, indicate that infection by serotype fort-bragg of the Autumnalis group is widespread in this Caribbean island. The occupational groups most affected are sanitation workers and sugar-cane workers. Results of serological tests conducted at the principle hospital are comparable with the results obtained by the microscopic agglutination ref

Exploring poverty: skeletal biology and documentary evidence in 19th-20th century Portugal.

BACKGROUND: The inference of the state of wealth or poverty from human skeletal remains is a difficult task, as the limited number of skeletal changes are mediated by numerous other physiological, biomechanical and pathological events. In recent years, identified skeletal collections have become valuable resources in enabling aetiologies of these changes to be understood while controlling for some known causative factors, e.g. age, sex and occupation. This has favoured more rigorous data analysis and interpretation. AIM: This study compares the presence of osteological makers of occupation -

Trunk and upper arm postures and movements among older workers in physically demanding occupations.

INTRODUCTION: Associations between work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and awkward postures and repetitive movements have been established. Action levels for elevated arms, trunk flexion, and fast movements have been suggested. With today's prolonged working life, older workers in manual jobs may be at increased risk for WMSDs. The aim of this study was therefore to assess postural workload in older workers in four physically demanding occupational groups using technical measurements and compare the exposure of the groups with each other's and with the action level. METHODS: Postur

Joint associations of occupational standing and occupational exertion with musculoskeletal symptoms in a US national sample.

OBJECTIVE: Observational studies have linked occupational standing or walking to musculoskeletal pain. These prior studies, however, are flawed as few accounted for physical exertion; a potential confounder that accompanies many standing-based occupations. The purpose of this study was to examine the individual and joint associations of occupational standing/walking and exertion with musculoskeletal symptoms. METHODS: Data for this analysis come from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey, a US nationally representative survey. Occupational standing/walking and exertion were assessed by se

Supraspinatus muscle occupation ratio predicts rotator cuff reparability.

BACKGROUND: We wished to determine the correlation between supraspinatus muscle occupation ratio and reparability of rotator cuff muscles and that of each occupation ratio with 1-muscle, 2-muscle, and 3-muscle rotator cuff injury. METHODS: We evaluated 170 patients (average age, 62.3 [40-83] years) with complete (type II) or incomplete (type III) rotator cuff repair by arthroscopy. Type II repair was defined as complete repair but less optimal coverage of the entire medial-lateral footprint. Type III repair was defined as incomplete repair; a small portion (<10 mm) of the humeral head is expo

The burdens of age-related and occupational noise-induced hearing loss in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Aging and noise are generally considered the most common causes of adult hearing loss in developed countries. This study estimates the contributions of aging and occupational noise in the United States. DESIGN: A model of hearing loss burden in American adults was constructed using data from the Census Bureau, from an international standard that predicts age-related and noise-induced hearing loss (ISO-1999), from the American Medical Association method of determining hearing impairment, and from sources estimating the distribution of occupational noise exposure in different age an
