From small to tall: breed-varied household pet dogs can be trained to detect Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a clinically diagnosed disease that carries a reported misdiagnosis rate of 10-20%. Recent scientific discoveries have provided evidence of volatile organic compounds in sebum that are unique to patients with PD. The primary objective of this study was to determine if companion dogs could be trained to distinguish between sebum samples provided by PD-positive patients and PD-negative human controls. This was a randomized, handler-blind, controlled study. Twenty-three canines of varying breeds, ages, and environmental backgrounds were included. The study period encom

The role of rat posterior parietal cortex in coordinating spatial representations during place avoidance in dissociated reference frames on a continuously rotating arena (Carousel).

On the Carousel maze, rats are trained to avoid a sector of a circular rotating arena, punishable by a mild electric foot-shock. In the room frame (RF) variant, the punishable sector remains stable relative to the room, while in the arena frame (AF) version, the sector rotates with the arena. The rats therefore need to disregard local olfactory, tactile and self-motion cues in RF condition and distal extra-maze landmarks in the AF task. In both primates and rodents, the coordination of various spatial reference frames is thought to depend on the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). We have previou

Dynamics of hippocampal and cortical activation during consolidation of a nonspatial memory.

Observations of temporally graded retrograde amnesia after hippocampal damage suggest that the hippocampal region plays a critical, time-limited role in memory consolidation. However, these observations do not indicate where permanent memory is stored, nor do they clarify whether the hippocampus normally remains involved in a nonessential way. Evidence from multiple neural imaging studies indicate the time-limited role of the hippocampus and suggest that the anterior cingulate cortex is a critical storage site of different types of long-term memory. However, each of the previous studies examin

Evaluating Sequence Foundation Models for Insect Olfactory Gene Discovery: Failure Modes, Evidence Standards, and a Benchmark Agenda.

Genome-scale searches for insect olfactory genes are vulnerable to rapid receptor divergence, tandem duplication, fragmented gene models, circular labels, and evolutionary leakage between training and test data. Sequence foundation models trained on DNA or proteins may extend homology-based annotation, but available evidence does not support their use as autonomous annotators or direct predictors of sensory function. This critical review organizes the problem around annotation failures rather than model catalogues. We distinguish six inference levels, from candidate locus detection to organism

Applications of Machine Learning to Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging due to its diverse manifestations. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can improve diagnostic precision, but their generalizability across medical centers in China is underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of an ML algorithm for PD diagnosis, trained and tested on data from different medical centers in China. METHODS: A total of 1656 participants were included, with 1028 from Beijing (training set) and 628 from Fuzhou (external validation set). Models were trained using the least absolute shrinkage and selection

Draf IIB with superior septectomy: finding the "middle ground".

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated a high failure rate of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) with Draf IIa in patients with diffuse polyposis, asthma, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease. A high percentage of these patients progress to endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure (EMLP). We describe a modification of the Draf IIb with a superior septectomy (IIb+SS), which may provide similar therapeutic benefit as demonstrated by the distribution of sinus irrigations in the sinus cavity with ESS with IIb+SS vs ESS with EMLP. METHODS: ESS with IIb+SS was performed on 6 cadaver heads.

The effects of lesions to the rat hippocampus or rhinal cortex on olfactory and spatial memory: retrograde and anterograde findings.

The role of the hippocampal system in retrograde and anterograde amnesia was investigated by using a novel olfactory-guided paradigm and a traditional test of spatial learning. In the retrograde study, rats were trained on a sequence of two-choice olfactory discriminations in the weeks prior to receiving neurotoxic lesions of the hippocampus or aspiration lesions of the perirhinal-entorhinal cortex. Memory tests for preoperatively learned discriminations revealed no statistical impairment for subjects with damage to the hippocampus on a problem learned remote in time from surgery (i.e., 4 week

Effect of head impacts and chemical irritation on elite athletes' olfaction.

Limited research exists on athletes' olfaction. As diet is an elementary part of an athlete's lifestyle and training, it is important to know whether the sport discipline itself carries a risk for olfactory impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether elite swimmers (chemical irritation), boxers (head impact) or soccer players (head impact) are at risk for impaired olfaction. Elite-level male swimmers (n = 30), boxers (n = 35) and soccer players (n = 30) aged 18-40 years were recruited from Finnish sport clubs. Floorball players (n = 30) were recruited as a control group. Learning-induced mRNA alterations in olfactory bulb mitral cells in neonatal rats.

In the olfactory bulb, a cAMP/PKA/CREB-dependent form of learning occurs in the first week of life that provides a unique mammalian model for defining the epigenetic role of this evolutionarily ancient plasticity cascade. Odor preference learning in the week-old rat pup is rapidly induced by a 10-min pairing of odor and stroking. Memory is demonstrable at 24 h, but not 48 h, posttraining. Using this paradigm, pups that showed peppermint preference 30 min posttraining were sacrificed 20 min later for laser microdissection of odor-encoding mitral cells. Controls were given odor only. The neuronal encoding of information in the brain.

We describe the results of quantitative information theoretic analyses of neural encoding, particularly in the primate visual, olfactory, taste, hippocampal, and orbitofrontal cortex. Most of the information turns out to be encoded by the firing rates of the neurons, that is by the number of spikes in a short time window. This has been shown to be a robust code, for the firing rate representations of different neurons are close to independent for small populations of neurons. Moreover, the information can be read fast from such encoding, in as little as 20 ms. In quantitative information theor

Disruptive effects of d-amphetamine on conditioned sexual inhibition in the male rat.

RATIONALE: Male rats trained to associate a neutral odor (almond) with nonreceptive females during their initial sexual experiences develop a conditioned sexual inhibition (CSI) toward the female bearing the olfactory cue when given a choice in a final copulatory preference test between two receptive females (one unscented and one scented) in an open field. We have previously shown that this CSI can be abolished by acute alcohol before the final copulatory preference test. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether acute treatment with d-amphetamine could also disrupt CSI. METHODS: Male rats received 20

Can the detection dog alert on COVID-19 positive persons by sniffing axillary sweat samples? A proof-of-concept study.

The aim of this proof-of-concept study was to evaluate if trained dogs could discriminate between sweat samples from symptomatic COVID-19 positive individuals (SARS-CoV-2 PCR positive) and those from asymptomatic COVID-19 negative individuals. The study was conducted at 2 sites (Paris, France, and Beirut, Lebanon), followed the same training and testing protocols, and involved six detection dogs (three explosive detection dogs, one search and rescue dog, and two colon cancer detection dogs). A total of 177 individuals were recruited for the study (95 symptomatic COVID-19 positive and 82 asympt

The inhibitory effects of corncob bedding on sexual behavior in the ovariectomized Long-Evans rat treated with estradiol benzoate are overcome by male cues.

The mechanisms underlying the sensitization of sexual behaviors by repeated administration of estradiol benzoate (EB) to ovariectomized (OVX) rats are not well understood. Here we tested whether two housing conditions play a role. Sexual behavior in the female rat is dependent on the activation of ERα (estrogen receptor alpha) by estradiol. Corncob (CC) bedding has been reported to have adverse effects on the reproductive behavior and physiology of rats, and to disrupt ERα signaling in mice. In addition, some rodent behaviors are stimulated by olfactory stimuli and enhanced in the presence of

Progress in clinical trials of cell transplantation for the treatment of spinal cord injury: how many questions remain unanswered?

Spinal cord injury can lead to severe motor, sensory and autonomic nervous dysfunctions. However, there is currently no effective treatment for spinal cord injury. Neural stem cells and progenitor cells, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, olfactory ensheathing cells, umbilical cord blood stem cells, adipose stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, oligodendrocyte precursor cells, macrophages and Schwann cells have been studied as potential treatments for spinal cord injury. These treatments were mainly performed in animals. However, subtle changes in sensory function, nerve root movement and pai

Discriminating BTX Molecules by the Nonselective Metal Oxide Sensor-Based Smart Sensing System.

Discriminating structurally similar volatile organic compounds (VOCs) molecules, such as benzene, toluene, and three xylene isomers (BTX), remains a significant challenge, especially, for metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, in which selectivity is a long-standing challenge. Recent progress indicates that temperature modulation of a single MOS sensor offers a powerful route in extracting the features of adsorbed gas analytes than conventional isothermal operation. Herein, a rectangular heating waveform is applied on NiO-, WO3-, and SnO2-based sensors to gradually activate the specific gas/

Examining Cocaine Conditioning Place Preference in Mice.

A key component of combating substance use disorders is understanding the neural mechanisms that support drug reward. Tasks such as self-administration assess the reinforcing properties of a drug using a learned behavior but require numerous training sessions and surgery. In comparison, the conditioned place preference (CPP) task assesses reward with little training, without costly surgeries, and confounds that accompany the use of anesthesia or pain-relieving drugs. The CPP task contains three phases: pretest, conditioning, and posttest. During the pretest, mice are allowed to explore a three

Enhancing motor imagery detection efficacy using multisensory virtual reality priming.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have been developed to allow users to communicate with the external world by translating brain activity into control signals. Motor imagery (MI) has been a popular paradigm in BCI control where the user imagines movements of e.g., their left and right limbs and classifiers are then trained to detect such intent directly from electroencephalography (EEG) signals. For some users, however, it is difficult to elicit patterns in the EEG signal that can be detected with existing features and classifiers. As such, new user control strategies and training paradigms have

The utility of maraviroc, an antiretroviral agent used to treat HIV, as treatment for opioid abuse? Data from MRI and behavioural testing in rats.

BACKGROUND: Maraviroc is an antiretroviral agent and C-C chemokine coreceptor 5 (CCR5) antagonist that is currently used to treat human immunodeficiency virus. CCR5/μ-opioid receptor heterodimerization suggests that maraviroc could be a treatment for oxycodone abuse. We treated rats with maraviroc to explore its effect on oxycodone-seeking and its interference with the analgesic effects of oxycodone. We used resting-state blood-oxygen-level-dependent functional connectivity to assess the effect of maraviroc on oxycodone-enhanced coupling in the reward circuitry and performed behavioural tests
