Anterior open bite due to idiopathic condylar resorption during orthodontic retention of a Class II Division 1 malocclusion.

A common dilemma when treating anterior open bite is understanding its etiology. Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) can cause open bite in affected individuals. Although it is prudent to not treat patients with ICR until active resorption has ceased, orthodontists may begin treating them because anterior open bite from ICR may not appear before or during their orthodontic treatment. This article reports a 12-year-old female who was diagnosed with ICR 10 months after completion of her orthodontic treatment for a Class II Division 1 malocclusion. When a young patient with a high mandibular ang

Long-term follow-up and treatment of a patient with severe skeletal open bite using temporary anchorage devices.

This case report presents the treatment and long-term follow-up of a patient with severe skeletal hyperdivergent open bite, Class II malocclusion, and a severely retruded chin. After failure of early treatment using high-pull headgear with a bite block during the early permanent dentition stage due to an unfavorable growth pattern, orthognathic surgery was proposed but rejected by the patient. Then, temporary anchorage devices were used to correct the occlusion and establish an acceptable overbite and overjet. The overall observation time was 8.5 years; the treatment time using fixed appliance

A severe open bite case treated with orthodontics and tongue reduction surgery: 13-year followup. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The management of open bite malocclusions creates controversy when treatment approach and long-term stability are considered. Tongue size, posture and habits have been associated as aetiologic and compounding factors. Reduction tongue surgery has therefore been advocated as an aid in treatment, especially when the open bite is accompanied by perceived macroglossia. AIM: The present article describes a clinical case of a 10-year-old girl who started treatment in the mixed dentition with an excessive open bite and speech defects. METHODS: A combination of orthodontics and a partial

Brief orofacial myofunctional therapy and tongue pressure as prediction factors for open bite correction: a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: To compare changes in tongue pressure during anterior open bite (AOB) treatment using a fixed palatal crib (PC) alone versus PC combined with brief orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT), and to determine whether these changes predict overbite correction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients were divided into two groups: the PC group received a fixed palatal crib alone, while the PC-OMT group received PC plus weekly OMT sessions for the first two months. Lateral cephalometric radiographs and tongue pressure measurements using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) were c

A Novel Treatment Modality Using Miniplates for Skeletal Class II Malocclusion with Anterior Open Bite: A Case Report.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Skeletal class II malocclusion is a challenge to treat when the patient presents in the adolescent stage of growth with a vertical growth pattern along with an anterior open bite (AOB). The usage of traditional myofunctional modalities in such conditions has not provided favorable outcomes. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11.5-year-old male patient reported with a chief complaint of spacing between the upper and lower teeth. A detailed examination was done, following which the patient was diagnosed with skeletal class II malocclusion with an AOB. We present a unique case of combinin

Vertical stability of different orthognathic treatments for correcting skeletal anterior open bite: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several orthognathic procedures have been applied to correct skeletal anterior open bites (SAOB). Which method is most stable has been debated and no consensus has been reached and there is no conclusive evidence for clinicians to use. OBJECTIVE: To analyse whether maxillary, mandibular, or bimaxillary surgery provides a better stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted up to December 2020 using PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Google Scholar. We made direct comparisons among the controlled trials and also made indire

Nonsurgical Orthodontic Treatment of a Severe Open Bite Case Using Miniscrews with Modified Multiloop Edgewise Arch Wire Technique.

Skeletal open bite is one of the most challenging malocclusions to treat and maintain due to the difficulty and instability of correction. Although a combination of orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery may be the ideal approach in most cases, the complications, risks, and costs of surgery have sparked an interest in alternative treatment options that use temporary anchorage devices to achieve orthognathic-like effects. Adult patients can be treated without the need for special compliance using temporary anchorage devices such as miniscrews. This case report demonstrates a goal-orient

Comparison of zygoma plates and infrazygomatic crest miniscrews used open bite treatment: A 3-dimensional finite element study.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate infrazygomatic crest (IZC) miniscrews, which represent a new approach to maxillary posterior tooth intrusion and extra-alveolar skeletal anchorage, using 3-dimensional finite element stress analysis to predict the clinical usability instead of zygoma plates. METHODS: Six different models were developed. The direction of the intrusion force was generated parallel to the maxillary first molar, and the posterior bite-block intrusion appliance was connected with 2 steel arches. A zygoma plate, stainless steel (SS)-IZC miniscrew, and a titanium alloy (TiA

Orthodontic Management of a Growing Patient With a Skeletal Class III Malocclusion and an Anterior Open Bite: A Case Report.

Class III malocclusion presents many challenges due to its varying elements of imbalance in skeletal, dental, and soft tissues. This necessitates a comprehensive treatment plan, including growth modification during the pre-pubertal growth phase, and long-term retention to reduce the chances of orthognathic surgery later. The components of Class III malocclusion include maxillary retrognathism, mandibular prognathism, or, in some cases, a combination of both. This article presents a case report of a pre-pubertal female patient, 11.5 years old, with skeletal Class III malocclusion, who sought or
