OBJECTIVE: To describe the anterior approach for open reduction of supracondylar fractures in children and to assess the morbidity and functional outcome.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis.
SETTING: University Hospital.
SUBJECTS: Eleven consecutive children (mean age 6 years, range 4-12) with supracondylar fractures who were treated by open reduction and fixation with a Kirschner wire through an anterior approach from 1984-1990 and followed up after a mean of 9 weeks (range 5-16 weeks).
RESULTS: There was no morbidity. Full functional recovery was achieved within four months of the accident.

Neglected femoral neck fractures are frequently complicated with nonunion and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The treatment is especially difficult in young adults because arthroplasty is not indicated. Five cases of neglected femoral neck fractures in young patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with pins. The defect of the femoral neck was filled with a block of vascularized iliac bone graft. After at least two years, the fractures were healed without avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The leg-length discrepancy was corrected in all but one case. The pedic

Ten displaced intra-articular fractures of the glenoid fossa were treated with open reduction and internal fixation between 1980 and 1987. Nine patients were available for evaluation at an average of four years (range, two to ten years) after the operation. Eight patients had mild or no symptoms and little or no restriction of the motion of the shoulder. There were no infections or malunions. The only complication was heterotopic ossification in one patient. Radiographic evaluation showed no evidence of traumatic osteoarthrosis in any patient. Open reduction and internal fixation is a useful a

BACKGROUND: Currently, the standard of treatment for trimalleolar (TM) fracture is osteosynthesis through open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). This study assessed whether arthroscopically assisted reduction and minimally invasive surgery (AARMIS) can be an alternative surgical method for TM fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 49 patients with TM that were surgically treated. 27 patients received ORIF and 22 patients underwent AARMIS . At baseline, we recorded the patient's demographic features, fracture pattern (AO-OTA and Haraguchi classification), and surgic

The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical effectiveness of minimally invasive clamp-assisted reduction and open reduction with wire cerclage and intramedullary nails for unstable subtrochanteric fractures. Between January 2016 and October 2019, 68 patients who had unstable subtrochanteric fractures experienced intramedullary nail surgery in this retrospective study. There were 41 cases in the minimally invasive clamp or closed reduction group (group A) and 27 cases in the open reduction with wire cerclage group (group B). There were 3 cases of complications in group A and 2 cases o

PURPOSE: Despite decades of study, a consensus on therapeutic approaches to condylar fractures remains elusive, and the vexing question of invasive or noninvasive therapy remains to be definitively answered. This randomized clinical study aimed to compare the outcomes of mandibular condylar fractures (MCFs) treated by closed reduction (CR) with those treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
METHODS: The investigators designed and implemented a randomized controlled trial composed of patients with unilateral or bilateral MCFs. Patients were randomly allocated into the ORIF and C

Background: Dorsal rotation or persistent displacement of the fracture fragment is frequently encountered in extension block pinning for mallet fractures. We reviewed nine irreducible mallet fracture patients treated with mini-open reduction and extension block pinning. Methods: A small V-shaped incision was made on the fracture gap when there was persistent displacement of fracture fragment despite closed maneuvers and percutaneous procedures while performing extension block pinning. Soft tissue or granulation tissue hampering reduction was removed through the incision. Anatomical reduction w

Background The choice of surgical versus nonsurgical treatment for fractures of the condylar process has its own limitations and remains a controversial issue. Improved knowledge of anatomy, technique, and technology combined with adequate experience with careful planning of surgical technique can avoid all the possible complications. Aim To compare open reduction and internal fixation with closed reduction and maxillomandibular fixation in the management of condylar fractures. Materials and method A prospective study was carried out among 22 patients who had minimally displaced or displaced c

Surgical management of two-part and three-part proximal humerus fractures is difficult and requires familiarity with more than one method of fixation. Poor bone quality, comminution, and the deforming forces of the rotator cuff on the tuberosities influence the choice of operative approach and fixation techniques. Closed reductions and percutaneous pinning offer the potential advantage of minimal soft-tissue dissection; however, good bone quality and minimal comminution are prerequisites. Selected two-part surgical neck fractures and valgus-impacted fractures lend themselves well to this techn

BACKGROUND: The quality of reduction is an important factor affecting clinical outcomes for displaced femoral neck fractures (FNFs). However, concerns remain about the invasiveness of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) as compared to that of closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF), and the choice between ORIF and CRIF as an optimal treatment strategy for displaced pediatric FNF remains controversial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched for studies published up to December 22, 2022, that compared ORIF and CRIF techniques

BACKGROUND Open distal humeral fractures (DHFs) often lead to loss of elbow function, thereby seriously affecting patient quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes of 2 surgical techniques to determine the better method for repairing open DHFs. Both groups were treated with immediate debridement first, and then group I had only internal fixation (IF), while group II underwent initial external fixation (EF) followed by IF surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study included 32 patients who had open DHFs between 2013 and 2018. Twelve patients underw

PURPOSE: Computed tomography (CT) imaging is commonly obtained following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of mandibular fractures but the significance of common findings is unknown. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of screw-to-fracture proximity and residual fracture displacement to post-operative complications following ORIF of mandibular angle fractures treated with monocortical fixation techniques.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study consisting of all patients with mandibular angle fractures treated with ORIF using monocortical fix

A stress-avulsion fracture of the inferior pole of the patella is rare. We report a case of a 65-year-old woman who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for a transverse fracture of the patella using cannulated screws inserted from the inferior pole of the patella. Subsequently, the patient developed an avulsion fracture of the inferior pole of the patella due to a stress riser from the prominent screw head. The avulsion fracture was treated with open repair and augmentation using a cerclage wire, and the stress riser was eliminated by burying the screw head into the bone. The outcom

BACKGROUND: Open ankle fractures are complex injuries with high complication rates. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with adverse outcomes after ankle fracture surgery, but limited data directly compare postoperative outcomes following ORIF of open ankle fractures in patients with versus without DM.
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether DM is associated with increased postoperative complications after ORIF of open ankle fractures and whether outcomes differ by diabetes severity.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: Demographic, perioperative, and postoperative data were collected f
