Clinical hypnosis in anesthesia: Knowledge and training needs among Moroccan nurse anesthetists.

Despite increasing evidence proving the efficacy of clinical hypnosis as an adjunct therapy to anesthesia in multiple surgical contexts, attitudes and perception of anesthesia personnel remain the principal barrier to its large-scale implementation. This study aims to describe and explore the level of knowledge in terms of clinical hypnosis use in anesthesia among Moroccan nurse anesthetists working in public sector health. A 21-item questionnaire translated into French for a prior study was prepared in electronic form. Using snowball sampling, we recruited nurse anesthetists from Morocco to a

Houston Methodist Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Guidelines.

Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (RAAA) is an acute aortic condition that requires emergent intervention and appropriate continuity of care to optimize patient outcomes. We describe the standardized RAAA protocol at the Houston Methodist Hospital Acute Aortic Treatment Center, developed to navigate critical patient transfer periods safely and efficiently, make crucial decisions about surgical intervention, and clearly communicate these plans with other care team providers. Our workflow is organized into five phases: prehospital, preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative, and post-discharge

Development of a management protocol for internal carotid artery injury during endoscopic surgery: a modified Delphi method and single-center multidisciplinary working group.

BACKGROUND: Intra-operative internal carotid artery (ICA) injury during transnasal endoscopic surgery is a potentially catastrophic event. Such an injury is life-threatening in the immediate setting, with a reported peri-operative mortality rate of 10%. Nasal packing, muscle patches, direct vessel closure, and endovascular techniques have been described as useful strategies for managing ICA bleeds. The objective of this study was to develop a formalized management protocol for intra-operative ICA injury through engagement with a multi-disciplinary panel. METHODS: A modified Delphi method incl

Cost containment via expense rationalization in open-heart surgery.

Hospital costs and the fees of the surgeon, assistant, anesthesiologist, and cardiologist were reviewed in a community hospital doing 425 cardiac operations in the year 1977. Each item of the bill was analyzed and discussed with each department of the hospital. Changes made in the routine saved approximately $1000 per patient--16% for patients having mitral valves replacement (MVR), 15% for those having aortic valve replacement (AVR), 21% for those having saphenous vein bypass grafts (SVBG), and 23% for pediatric cases. The areas most likely to yield economic reductions without alteration of t

Management of a fire in the operating room.

Operating room (OR) fires remain a significant source of liability for anesthesia providers and injury for patients, despite existing practice guidelines and other improvements in operating room safety. Factors contributing to OR fires are well understood and these occurrences are generally preventable. OR personnel must be familiar with the fire triad which consists of a fuel supply, an oxidizing agent, and an ignition source. Existing evidence shows that OR-related fires can result in significant patient complications and malpractice claims. Steps to reduce fires include taking appropriate s

User satisfaction with single-use instruments versus reusable instruments for treating distal radius fractures with locking volar plates.

INTRODUCTION: The adoption of single-use instruments (SUI) in orthopedic and trauma surgery continues at a rapid pace. Economics studies on this topic have come to contradictory conclusions about whether these SUI have a cost advantage. The aims of our study were to (1) compare the satisfaction of operating room staff between SUI and reusable instruments (RUI) in the context of distal radius fracture fixation with locking volar plates; (2) compare the immediate postoperative and medium-term radiological outcomes of patients operated these two types of instrument sets. We hypothesized that user

Consequences and potential problems of operating room outbursts and temper tantrums by surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal tales of colorful temper tantrums and outbursts by surgeons directed at operating room nurses and at times other health care providers, like residents and fellows, are part of the history of surgery and include not only verbal abuse but also instrument throwing and real harassment. Our Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Nancy Epstein, has made the literature review of "Are there truly any risks and consequences when spine surgeons mistreat their predominantly female OR nursing staff/colleagues, and what can we do about it?," an assigned topic for members of the editorial board as part

Optimizing AI implementation for surgery: recommendations for infrastructure and deployment in the operating room.

Recent years have seen a surge in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance intraoperative decision-making and improve patient safety. Yet, real-world evidence on their implementation remains limited. This study evaluated the impact of AI deployment in the operating room across key implementation domains-usability, cost, and carbon footprint-using cloud and edge-based infrastructures. Twenty-three end-users (surgeons, residents, fellows, operating room nurses) from a multi-site teaching hospital in Canada participated in system usability testing, assessed with val

Waste anesthetic gas control: From discovery to source control scavenging in the postanesthesia care unit.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently highlighted the presence of waste anesthetic gases (WAGs) in Postanesthesia Care Units (PACUs), raising significant concerns about occupational exposures in these environments. Exposure to WAGs is associated with a range of adverse health effects, from symptoms such as headaches and0 fatigue to more severe outcomes, including cancer, genetic mutations, reduced fertility, miscarriages, and congenital anomalies. The primary source of WAGs in PACUs is patient exhalation, as individuals leave the operating rooms (ORs) with
