Tomographic optical imaging of cortical responses after crossing nerve transfer in mice.

To understand the neural mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of crossing nerve transfer for brachial plexus injuries in human patients, we investigated the cortical responses after crossing nerve transfer in mice using conventional and tomographic optical imaging. The distal cut ends of the left median and ulnar nerves were connected to the central cut ends of the right median and ulnar nerves with a sciatic nerve graft at 8 weeks of age. Eight weeks after the operation, the responses in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) elicited by vibratory stimulation applied to the left forep

EN-FACE OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY IMAGING IN A CASE OF CHOROIDAL RUPTURE.

PURPOSE: To report a case of choroidal rupture resulting due to blunt trauma using en-face optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 22-year-old man sustained a blunt trauma to his right eye. At the initial examination, four lesions with a subretinal hemorrhage were observed during a fundus examination of the macular area including the fovea, but the findings under the lesions were unclear. The authors observed the extent of the minute findings noninvasively by en-face OCT imaging from the initial examination. Six months after the trauma, the fine crescent-

A case of recurrent unstable angina - Insight from optical coherence tomography imaging.

Intimal tear is a rare cause of ACS and is angiographically indistinguishable. OCT provides unprecendented insight to the mechanism of ACS with its near tissue level definition. This is a case of unstable angina with non-significant RCA lesion. OCT showed intimal tear/flaps with evidence of thrombi, thus clinching the diagnosis.

Comprehensive vascular imaging using optical coherence tomography-based angiography and photoacoustic tomography.

Studies have proven the relationship between cutaneous vasculature abnormalities and dermatological disorders, but to image vasculature noninvasively <italic<in vivo</italic<, advanced optical imaging techniques are required. In this study, we imaged a palm of a healthy volunteer and three subjects with cutaneous abnormalities with photoacoustic tomography (PAT) and optical coherence tomography with angiography extension (OCTA). Capillaries in the papillary dermis that are too small to be discerned with PAT are visualized with OCTA. From our results, we speculate that the PA signal from the pa

Contribution of optical coherence tomography imaging in management of iatrogenic coronary dissection.

Iatrogenic coronary dissection is a rare but potentially serious complication of coronary angiography and angioplasty. Treatment with angioplasty guided only by angiography is often difficult. Optical coherence tomography imaging seems to be an interesting technique to lead the management of iatrogenic coronary dissection. Diagnosis can be made by optical coherence tomography; it can also eliminate differential diagnosis. Furthermore, this technique can guide safely the endovascular treatment.

Broadband optical mammography instrument for depth-resolved imaging and local dynamic measurements.

We present a continuous-wave instrument for non-invasive diffuse optical imaging of the breast in a parallel-plate transmission geometry. The instrument measures continuous spectra in the wavelength range 650-1000 nm, with an intensity noise level <1.5% and a spatial sampling rate of 5 points/cm in the x- and y-directions. We collect the optical transmission at four locations, one collinear and three offset with respect to the illumination optical fiber, to recover the depth of optical inhomogeneities in the tissue. We imaged a tissue-like, breast shaped, silicone phantom (6 cm thick) with two

A novel multimodal optical imaging system for early detection of oral cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Several imaging techniques have been advocated as clinical adjuncts to improve identification of suspicious oral lesions. However, these have not yet shown superior sensitivity or specificity over conventional oral examination techniques. We developed a multimodal, multi-scale optical imaging system that combines macroscopic biochemical imaging of fluorescence lifetime imaging with subcellular morphologic imaging of reflectance confocal microscopy for early detection of oral cancer. We tested our system on excised human oral tissues. STUDY DESIGN: In total, 4 tissue specimens were

Macular imaging for glaucoma using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography: a review.

Since its introduction, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become widely used and accepted as an imaging modality to detect and follow glaucoma, with measurement of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) being the most utilized parameter. Up until recently, macular thickness parameters have not been commonly used in glaucoma due to results of earlier studies with time-domain OCT (TD-OCT) that revealed macular imaging to be inferior to pRNFL in the diagnosis of glaucoma. The recent advent of spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) has renewed interest in the potential uses of macular imag

Diffuse optical imaging of the healthy and diseased breast: a systematic review.

Screening X-ray mammography is limited by false positives and negatives leading to unnecessary physical and psychological morbidity. Diffuse Optical Imaging using harmless near infra red light, provides lesion detection based on functional abnormalities and represents a novel diagnostic arm that could complement traditional mammography. Reviews of optical breast imaging have not been systematic, are focused mainly on technological developments, and have become superseded by rapid technological advancement. The aim of this study is to review clinically orientated studies involving approximately

Development of an optical approach for noninvasive imaging of Alzheimer's disease pathology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the presence of aggregates of the amyloid-beta (A beta) peptide in the brain. These aggregates manifest themselves as senile plaques and cerebrovascular amyloid angiopathy (CAA). While traditional histochemical approaches can easily identify these deposits in postmortem tissue, only recently have specific ligands been developed to target A beta in living patients using positron emission tomography (PET). Successful detection of A beta pathology in patients will enable definitive preclinical diagnosis of AD, and enable quantitative evaluation of the

High-resolution endoscopic imaging of the GI tract using optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has demonstrated the microscopic structure of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract mucosa and submucosa in vitro. We evaluated a prototype OCT system and assessed the feasibility of OCT in the human GI tract. METHODS: The 2.4 mm diameter prototype OCT probe, inserted through an endoscope, provides a 360-degree radial scan. Images (6.7 frames/sec) are displayed on a television monitor. Tissue contact is not required. In patients undergoing elective endoscopy, OCT images were obtained of normal mucosa (confirmed by biopsy). RESULTS: Seventy-two sites w
