Apparent hallucinations in monkeys during around-the-clock amphetamine for seven to fourteen days. Possible relevance to amphetamine psychosis.

Schizophrenia-like symptoms have been experimentally produced in humans by a single, large dose of amphetamine or by relatively low level, but continuous administration of the drug. In animal studies of the psychotomimetic properties of amphetamine, high doses and, in particular, repeated daily-injection drug schedules have often been used. However, amphetamine psychosis is not always a prominent effect of repeated intake drug schedules in humans and available clinical evidence suggests that psychosis develops more readily when the drug is taken in a continuous fashion over longer periods. From dopamine to salience to psychosis--linking biology, pharmacology and phenomenology of psychosis.

How does an excess in a neurochemical lead someone to being paranoid about the intentions of their neighbour? And why does blocking a dopamine receptor improve this symptom? In this article we present a heuristic framework which attempts to link the biology, phenomenology and pharmacology of psychosis. Focussing on dopamine's role in reward prediction and motivational salience we propose that psychosis arises from an aberrant assignment of novelty and salience to objects and associations. Antipsychotics block dopamine receptors and decrease dopamine transmission, which leads to the attenuation

Influence of olanzapine on memory functions.

Even though memory dysfunction is not considered to be a diagnostic criterion for schizophrenia, results of a neuropsychological research indicate significant damage in mnestic functioning, especially in verbal memory (Saykin et al. 1991). This type of a disorder is recorded in patients with a first episode of schizophrenia, as well as in chronic patients (Saykin et al. 1994). These researches show that this deficit is not influenced by neuroleptics. Paulsen and associates suggest that the deficit of verbal learning in schizophrenia is related to difficulties in encoding retrieving information

Masculine depression and acute mental health burden.

Masculine depression is characterized by externalizing symptoms, including anger, aggression, substance use, and risk-seeking behavior. However, the understanding of its clinical presentation remains highly limited. Here, we tested mental health burden in patients with high masculine depression scores in a case-control study of 163 depressed in-patients (44% women and 56% men; high vs. low masculine depression scores according to a sex-separated median split of the Male Depression Risk Scale-22 [MDRS-22]) and 176 controls (51% women and 49% men). In models adjusted for depression severity, the

Lateralized electrodermal dysfunction and complexity in patients with schizophrenia and depression.

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence indicates that in psychiatric patients with schizophrenia and depression, lateralized EDA changes linked to temporal-limbic electrophysiological dysfunction occur. These clinical findings provide evidence for brain asymmetry and disruptions related to integrative brain activity in pathological conditions. METHODS: These changes in brain asymmetry may be assessed by linear analysis of EDA measurement and nonlinear analysis of brain complexity calculated as information entropy. Two groups of patients with established diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia (N=35), unipola

A cross-cultural review of sudden mass assault by a single individual in the oriental and occidental cultures.

A nonrandom sample of North American cases of sudden mass assault by a single individual (SMASI, n = 30) is compared with a nonrandom sample of Laotian amok cases (n = 18) and other amok studies. Perpetrators in both studies show evidence of social isolation, loss, depression, anger, pathological narcissism, and paranoia, often to a psychotic degree. The term "innovative perpetrator" is reintroduced and expanded upon. Similarities among samples far outweigh differences, leading the authors to conclude that SMASI and its appearance in different cultures is not a culture-bound syndrome.

Treatment of cognitive, psychiatric, and affective disorders associated with Parkinson's disease.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and add significantly to the burden of disease. These symptoms are most commonly part of the disease spectrum owing to pathological changes within relevant brain regions. Neuropsychiatric problems include disorders of cognition, ranging from mild cognitive impairment to dementia, psychotic symptoms, including, most commonly, well-formed visual hallucinations and paranoid delusions, and mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. The other common cause of neuropsychiatric problem is secondary to use of dopaminergic drugs. Some

Behavioral symptomatology and psychopharmacology of Lewy body dementia.

Lewy body dementia (LBD) is an umbrella term for major neurocognitive disorders caused by Lewy body pathology. Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) and Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are the two main syndromes in LBD. LBDs typically present with cognitive impairment, cholinergic deficiency, neuropsychiatric symptoms such as visual hallucinations and paranoid delusions, as well as parkinsonian symptoms. Due to the urgency in diagnosing LBD early in the disease course to provide the most optimal management of these syndromes, it is important that clinicians elicit the most clinically significant

Bilateral hearing loss heralding sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) with bilateral hearing loss at onset and literature review of the scarce cases of CJD with similar audiologic manifestations at presentation. CASE REPORT: A 67-yr-old man presented to the hospital for evaluation of rapid progression of behavioral decline, unsteady gait, and bilateral hearing loss. Three months before admission, he abruptly developed bilateral hypoacusis without associated tinnitus or vertigo. Shortly after, his family noted an ataxic gait and behavioral changes, for example, paranoid delusions. Initial wo

Childhood sexual abuse in adult patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have found elevated rates of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients. They have also implicated the role of CSA later in BPD. However, there has been a scarcity of studies regarding this in Indian population. OBJECTIVES: To profile the occurrence of CSA and its parameters in BPD patients and to document symptomatology of BPD associated with CSA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six consecutive patients with BPD were administered with a two-staged semi-structured interview by different interviewers with the first stage for collecting

Niemann-Pick disease type C1 presenting with psychosis in an adolescent male.

Niemann-Pick disease, a neurovisceral lysosomal lipid storage disorder, is a rare disorder that is unknown to many clinicians. The disease, that often has its onset during childhood or adolescence, shows a polymorphic clinical picture, including psychiatric symptoms. Because of its infrequence, Niemann-Pick disease is diagnosed with an average delay of 6 years. This report presents a case of an adolescent male whose symptoms had led to various hospitalisations and psychiatric diagnoses. When he presented with psychotic symptoms in our department, thorough diagnosis revealed Niemann-Pick diseas

Somatic sexual hallucinations and erotomanic delusions in a mentally handicapped woman.

A case of erotic delusion and concurrent somatic sexual hallucination is described in a 66-year-old mentally handicapped woman. The history, mental state and biological investigations convey the impression of erotomania, or de Clerambault's syndrome. Treatment with Pimozide has resulted in a remarkable improvement such that the patient has been symptom free for 8 months at the time of reporting. In the authors' opinion, the case lends support to the argument that erotomania exists as a mono-delusional disorder and is equivalent to the DSM-III-R classification of Paranoid Disorder, Erotomanic T

[Haloperidol decanoate: results of a 6-month open trial in paranoid schizophrenia].

An open clinical trial with Haloperidol Decanoate was carried out in order to determine its therapeutic efficacy, side effects, and tolerance. The sample population was a 30 male-and-female-psychotic-patient group (15 in-patients and 15 out-patients treated at a private psychiatric institution). A marked stabilizing effect with no relapses was observed. Therefore, it can safely be said that Haloperidol Decanoate helped in controling these patients satisfactorily, and getting a positive social reintegration.

[Reactive states in patients with traumatic disease of the brain at remote periods].

Long-term reactive conditions in 100 patients with traumatic cerebral lesions were studied. On the basis of the disease course, the patients were divided into two groups. In 55 cases, psychogenic disorders developed into neuroses, the latter transforming over years into neurosis-like symptomatology, with the growing frequency of vegetative and liquorodynamic impairments and also with increased asthenia. In the case of psychoses development, there was a tendency toward the alleviation of the acuity of every subsequent reactive condition. Such disorders as acute reactive psychoses, reactive depr

Magnesium Supplement and the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 Microdeletion (Burnside-Butler) Syndrome: A Potential Treatment?

The 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion (Burnside-Butler) syndrome is an emerging disorder that encompasses four genes (NIPA1, NIPA2, CYFIP1, and TUBGCP5). When disturbed, these four genes can lead to cognitive impairment, language and/or motor delay, psychiatric/behavioral problems (attention-deficit hyperactivity, autism, dyslexia, schizophrenia/paranoid psychosis), ataxia, seizures, poor coordination, congenital anomalies, and abnormal brain imaging. This microdeletion was reported as the most common cytogenetic finding when using ultra-high- resolution chromosomal microarrays in patients present
