The impact of comorbid depression on recovery from personality disorders and improvements in psychosocial functioning: results from a randomized controlled trial.

Depressive disorders often co-occur with personality disorders. The extent to which depressive disorders influence treatment outcome in personality disorders remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of co-morbid depression on recovery from personality disorders and improvements in psychosocial functioning. This study drew data from a randomized-controlled trial in which patients (N = 320) with cluster-c (92%), paranoid, histrionic and/or narcissistic personality disorders received schema-therapy, treatment-as-usual, or clarification-oriented psychotherapy. Recovery fr

Dispositional forgiveness buffers paranoia following interpersonal transgression.

OBJECTIVE: To test a novel proposition that dispositional forgiveness has the unrecognized benefit of buffering feelings of paranoia following negative interpersonal experiences and interpersonal transgressions. METHODS: In Study 1 (N = 128), we used an experimental paradigm, the Prisoner's Dilemma Game (PDG), to test the premise that an interpersonal transgression increases state paranoia. Study 2 (N = 180) used a longitudinal design to test the central proposition that dispositional forgiveness buffers state paranoia following naturally occurring difficult (vs pleasant) interpersonal events

Subgroups of borderline personality disorder: A latent class analysis.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability in interpersonal, affective, cognitive, self-identity, and behavioral domains. For a BPD diagnosis, individuals must present at least five of nine symptoms, resulting in 256 possible symptom combinations; thus, individuals diagnosed with BPD can differ substantially. Specific symptoms of BPD tend to co-occur, suggesting BPD subgroups. To explore this potential, we analyzed data from 504 participants diagnosed with BPD enrolled in one of three randomized controlled trials conducted at center for Addiction and Mental Health in

Manifestations of Paranoid Personality in Workaholic Middle Managers.

The problem of paranoid disorders is widespread and difficult to diagnose due to the many mental symptoms that a person often perceives as character traits. Passion for work, the so-called pathological workaholism, harms not only the suffering person but also all the people around them, affecting their quality of life and disrupting social and family ties. The purpose of study was to determine the level of pathological workaholism and its main symptoms. The objectives of the study included interviewing respondents and identifying the correlation between the level of workaholism and mental mani

Classification of chronic psychoses including delusional disorders and schizophrenias.

A classification of chronic psychoses including nonparanoid schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia, paranoid state and paranoia (delusional disorder) is presented. This classification is dependent on a systematic increase in number of symptoms with each group. In particular, delusional disorder is examined with regard to family history. It is clear from the data which are presented that delusional disorder is more likely to be associated with a family history of such traits as suspiciousness, jealousy, secretiveness, and the presence of paranoid behavior or delusions. There is evidence that suc

Guardianship as a back-door insanity strategy: Parricide, antisocial personality disorder, and malingered psychosis in Brazil.

Intrafamilial homicide, particularly parricide, sits at a critical intersection of forensic psychiatry, criminal justice, and civil rights protection, and diagnostic labels generated in custodial settings may later shape high-stakes civil decisions. We report the case of a 24-year-old man imprisoned for parricide committed at age 19, who was referred to an independent forensic psychiatric evaluation within a Brazilian civil guardianship (curatela) action. The assessment integrated developmental and criminological reconstructions, collateral records (school and juvenile justice documentation, p

Efficacy and Tolerability of Asenapine Compared with Olanzapine in Borderline Personality Disorder: An Open-Label Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Asenapine is a new second-generation antipsychotic that is understudied in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Only one study investigating the use of the drug in this indication (an open-label pilot study) has been conducted to date. OBJECTIVE: The present open-label, randomized, controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of asenapine in comparison with olanzapine, the most broadly studied antipsychotic in BPD. METHODS: A total of 51 outpatients aged between 18 and 50 years with a diagnosis of BPD based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diso

Exploring treatment moderators in a randomized clinical trial of virtual reality-based vs. standard cognitive behavioral therapy for paranoia.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality-based cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis (VR-CBTp) has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing paranoid ideation. This study examined moderators of treatment response in VR-CBTp compared to CBTp among individuals with paranoid ideation. METHODS: Eighty-one individuals with a psychotic disorder were included in these secondary analyses of the TOPIC-VR trial. Participants were randomized to maximally 16 sessions of CBTp or VR-CBTp. Moderator analyses examined clinical (baseline safety behaviors, paranoia, social anxiety) and sociodemographic factors (sex, age,

The murder of the surgeon Antonio Parrozzani and the relationship between sexual disorders and paranoid thinking.

In this study we aimed to describe the relationship between sexual disorders and paranoid thinking describing the historical case of murder of the famous surgeon Antonio Parrozzani and the pathological personality of his murderer. Parrozzani was killed by Francesco Mancini, his patient in the past. Mancini was obsessed by his sexual problems due to hypothetical injuries after an inguinal hernia surgery, made by Parrozzani. Following treatment, the murderer likely lived his surgery as a traumatic event and developed a paranoid thinking against the surgeon, breaking out with the dramatic homicid

Geriatric paranoia: case report illustrating behavioral management.

Paranoid thinking is a defense mechanism against feelings of inferiority and humiliation. Paranoid behavior serves as a means of getting attention, sympathy and help. A case study of an 81-year-old woman illustrates the nature of geriatric paranoia and the roles of interpersonal relationships, rigid personality, depression, and the impairment of sensory and memory functions. The problem proved to be the effects on the family and neighbors of the patient's verbally expressed paranoid delusions. Treatment consisted of reducing the frequency of these paranoid complaints by means of reality therap

Cannabis use, problem-gambling severity, and psychiatric disorders: Data from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

Cannabis use and related disorders are common in adults and frequently co-occur with subsyndromal and pathological gambling. However, understanding how cannabis use may moderate relationships between problem-gambling severity and psychiatric disorders remains poorly understood. Data from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (N = 43,093 adults) were examined to investigate how cannabis use moderated associations between problem-gambling severity (with gambling groups based on the 10 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual [DSM-IV] inclusionary criteria for pathologica

The relationship between personality psychopathology and aggressive behavior in research volunteers.

Theorists and clinicians have long believed that personality psychopathology is a risk factor for aggressive behavior. Previous investigations in this area, however, have provided mixed results. In this study, the relationship between personality psychopathology and aggressive behavior was examined in 137 research volunteers. The influences of gender and coexisting major mental disorders were statistically controlled. Aggressive behavior was associated with criteria for 7 of the 11 personality disorders listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., rev.). Except

Practice Assessment Tool for the Care of Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a long-term pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, unstable self-image, marked impulsivity, and/or affective instability. In addition, these features can be evidenced by efforts to avoid real or feared abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, mood reactivity, recurrent self-injurious or suicidal behavior, other impulsive behaviors with potential for self-damaging effects, intense anger or difficulty with anger control, and transient paranoid ideation or stress-related dissociative symptoms. BPD is associated with subs

Socio-demographic profile and psychiatric comorbidity of subjects with pathological gambling.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological gambling is defined as the failure to resist the impulse to gamble despite disruption to personal, family and vocational life. It appears to be highly comorbid with psychiatric disorders. This study aims to describe the socio-demographic profile and comorbidity of 40 pathological gamblers compared to controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were administered to 40 cases (90% male, mean age = 38.3, SD = 10.0) scoring 5 or more in the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and verified to be pathological gamblers based on DSM-IV criteria and 40 age-and-gender-matche

The ethical significance of diagnostic test results in psychology practice.

"Psychologists base the opinions contained in their recommendations, reports and diagnostic or evaluative statements including forensic testimony on information and techniques sufficient to substantiate their findings". Do expert psychodiagnosticians rely in their professional final reports on the materials and raw data obtained from test materials? How ethical are they in their professional performances? In order to answer this question, expert clinical psychologists were given batteries of psychodiagnostic tests, accompanied by one of two different types of background information, suggesting

The effect of social change on causal beliefs of mental disorders and treatment preferences in Ghana.

The present study investigated the associations between social change, personality, causal beliefs and treatment style and goal preferences of 375 Ghanaian teachers. The index of social change (ISC) was conceptualized as the average percentile rank of a person's income, education and acculturation. The self-report measures (greatly modified after two pilot studies) were subscales of the SuinnLew Acculturation Scale, the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (dependency), the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (autonomy), the Symptom Checklist '90 (paranoid ideation), the Spheres of Control Scale, and th
