Abundance patterns of two Oropsylla (Ceratophyllidae: Siphonaptera) species on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) hosts.

Behavioral, genetic, and immune variation within a host population may lead to aggregation of parasites whereby a small proportion of hosts harbor a majority of parasites. In situations where two or more parasite species infect the same host population there is the potential for interaction among parasites that could potentially influence patterns of aggregation through either competition or facilitation. We studied the occurrence and abundance patterns of two congeneric flea species on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) hosts to test for interactions among parasite species. We li

Contribution of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major in BALB/c mice.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a tropical disease that can cause chronic lesions and leave life-long scars, leading to social stigmatization and psychological disorders. Using growth factors and immunomodulatory agents that could accelerate wound healing and reduce the scar is highly demanded. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) plays an essential role in wound healing. It stimulates the proliferation of keratocytes and fibroblasts, and promotes re-epithelialization. Here, the effect of EGF in combination with Glucantime and nano-liposomal Amphotericin B (SinaAmpholeish) on the healing process of C

Quantification of Leishmania infantum DNA in the bone marrow, lymph node and spleen of dogs.

The aim of the present study was to quantify the parasite load of Leishmania infantum in dogs using real-time PCR (qPCR). Bone marrow, lymph node and spleen samples were taken from 24 dogs serologically positive for L. infantum that had been put down by the official epidemiological surveillance service. According to the clinical signs the dogs were classified as asymptomatic or symptomatic. After DNA extraction, the samples were subjected to qPCR to detect and quantify L. infantum DNA. Out of the 24 dogs, 12.5% (3/24) were classified as asymptomatic and 87.5% (21/24) as symptomatic. Real-time

An expanded species-area perspective on helminth diversity and infection load in lizards: A phylogenetic comparative approach.

Hosts function as ecological islands for endoparasites, offering structured habitats that support parasite survival, growth, and reproduction. Larger and older hosts are often expected to harbour more diverse and abundant parasitic assemblages due to increased structural complexity and longer exposure times. In this study, we investigated how host body size and phylogenetic relatedness influence endoparasite mean richness and mean intensity of infection in lizards from the Atlantic Rainforest of northeastern Brazil. We analysed 121 parasitised specimens representing 15 species, recording body

Cestode parasite accumulation in Octopus maya: Insights from an opportunistic sampling during the 2022 red tide event.

The infection dynamics of Prochristianella sp., a metacestode parasitizing the Yucatán Peninsula-endemic octopus, Octopus maya, were examined to explore the relationship between host size and parasitic infection parameters. During a red tide event, forty-nine octopuses were sampled from a single locality in the Yucatán Peninsula, México, and classified into three size classes. Infection metrics were assessed, including prevalence, mean intensity, abundance, and total parasite count. The results revealed a significant positive association (r = 0.85) between host size and the number of Prochrist

Sex-biased differences in the effects of host individual, host population and environmental traits driving tick parasitism in red deer.

The interactions between host individual, host population, and environmental factors modulate parasite abundance in a given host population. Since adult exophilic ticks are highly aggregated in red deer (Cervus elaphus) and this ungulate exhibits significant sexual size dimorphism, life history traits and segregation, we hypothesized that tick parasitism on males and hinds would be differentially influenced by each of these factors. To test the hypothesis, ticks from 306 red deer-182 males and 124 females-were collected during 7 years in a red deer population in south-central Spain. By using g

A Comparative Study of Four Methods for the Detection of Nematode Eggs and Large Protozoan Cysts in Mandrill Faecal Material.

Coproscopical methods like sedimentation and flotation techniques are widely used in the field for studying simian gastrointestinal parasites. Four parasites of known zoonotic potential were studied in a free-ranging, non-provisioned population of mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx): 2 nematodes (Necatoramericanus/Oesophagostomum sp. complex and Strongyloides sp.) and 2 protozoan species (Balantidium coli and Entamoeba coli). Different coproscopical techniques are available but they are rarely compared to evaluate their efficiency to retrieve parasites. In this study 4 different field-friendly metho

Multi-level determinants of parasitic fly infection in forest passerines.

The study of myiasis is important because they may cause problems to the livestock industry, public health, or wildlife conservation. The ecology of parasitic dipterans that cause myiasis is singular, as they actively seek their hosts over relatively long distances. However, studies that address the determinants of myiasis dynamics are very scarce. The genus Philornis include species that may be excellent models to study myiasis ecology, as they exclusively parasitize bird nestlings, which stay in their nests until they are fully fledged, and larvae remain at the point of entry until the paras

Regulatory effect of PGE2 on microbicidal activity and inflammatory cytokines in canine leishmaniasis.

Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is caused by the intracellular parasite Leishmania infantum. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) exerts potent regulatory effects on the immune system in experimental model Leishmania infection, but this influence has not yet been studied in CanL. In this study, PGE2 and PGE2 receptor levels and the regulatory effect of PGE2 on arginase activity, NO2 , IL-10, IL-17, IFN-γ, TNF-α and parasite load were evaluated in cultures of splenic leucocytes obtained from dogs with CanL in the presence of agonists and inhibitors. Our results showed that splenic leucocytes from dogs with Can

T-cell tolerance and exhaustion in the clearance of Echinococcus multilocularis: role of inoculum size in a quantitative hepatic experimental model.

The local immune mechanisms responsible for either self-healing or sustained chronic infection are not clear, in the development of E. multilocularis larvae. Here, we developed a suitable experimental model that mimics naturally infected livers, according to the parasite load. We demonstrated that local cellular immunity and fibrogenesis are actually protective and fully able to limit metacestode growth in the liver of low or medium dose-infected mice (LDG or MDG), or even to clear it, while impairment of cellular immunity is followed by a more rapid and severe course of the disease in high do

Experimental Infections of Bluegill with the Trematode Ribeiroia ondatrae (Digenea: Cathaemasiidae): Histopathology and Hematological Response.

Infections by the digenetic trematode, Ribeiroia ondatrae, cause severe limb malformations in many North American amphibians. Ribeiroia ondatrae also infects fishes as second intermediate hosts, but less is known about the pathology and immune responses initiated in infected fish, even though reports of infected fish date back to early 1900s. To this end, we experimentally exposed juvenile Bluegills Lepomis macrochirus to three doses of R. ondatrae cercariae and monitored the pathology, parasite infection success, and humoral responses over 648 h. All exposed fish became infected with metacerc

Age-related prevalence and intensity of Trichuris trichiura infection in a St. Lucian community.

Age-related changes in the average worm burden and the prevalence of Trichuris trichiura infection, in a village community in St. Lucia, were examined by field studies based on worm expulsion techniques. Horizontal age-intensity profiles were convex in form with peak parasite loads occurring in the 2 to 15-year-old children. Prevalence is shown to be a poor indicator of changes in average worm load with age. Faecal egg counts (epg and epd) provide a qualitative measure of worm burdens since fecundity is shown to be approximately independent of worm load. The parasites were highly aggregated wi

Early Kinetics of Intestinal Infection and Immune Responses to Two Toxoplasma gondii Strains in Pigs.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite, able to infect all homeothermic animals mostly through ingestion of (oo)cysts contaminated food or water. Recently, we observed a T. gondii strain-specific clearance from tissues upon infection in pigs: while the swine-adapted LR strain persisted in porcine tissues, a subsequent infection with the human-isolated Gangji strain cleared parasites from several tissues. We hypothesized that intestinal immune responses shortly after infection might play a role in this strain-specific clearance. To assess this possibility, the parasite load in

Trypanosoma cruzi infection in MHC-deficient mice: further evidence for the role of both class I- and class II-restricted T cells in immune resistance and disease.

The role of T cell population in immune control of Trypanosoma cruzi infection and subsequent development of disease has been examined using gene knockout mice deficient in the expression of either or both class I and Class II MHC. Mice deficient in either class I- or class II-restricted T cell populations show a striking similarity in their mortality rate, parasite load and tissue inflammatory response following infection with the Brazil strain of T. cruzi. In both cases all animals died during the acute phase of the infection with high parasitemias and high parasite loads in the heart and sk

The Sexual Dimorphism of the Neuroimmune Response in the Brains of Taenia crassiceps-Infected Mice.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections are associated with cognitive deficits, especially in school-age children. Deworming treatment in heavily infected children improves their short- and long-term memory recall. In mice, intraperitoneal helminth infection with Taenia crassiceps (T. crassiceps) shows sexual dimorphism in terms of the parasite load, immune response, hormone levels, and behavioral changes. We have previously shown poorer short-term memory performance and changes in the concentrations of cytokines and neurotransmitters in the hippocampus, which were replicated in this study. The molecu

Topical microemulsion with phenolic compounds from Libidibia ferrea (Fabaceae): An alternative treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The pharmacotherapy of cutaneous leishmaniasis is invasive and presents several adverse reactions, which reinforces the need for topical and less toxic alternatives. METHODS: Topical microemulsions containing phenolic compounds from Libidibia ferrea (Fabaceae) were developed, physicochemically characterized, and tested in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) experimentally infected with Leishmania amazonensis. After treatment, clinical progression of lesions, histopathological alterations, and parasite load were evaluated. The dichloromethane (DCM) fraction of the extract was analyzed

A heterologous prime-boost regime using DNA and recombinant vaccinia virus expressing the Leishmania infantum P36/LACK antigen protects BALB/c mice from cutaneous leishmaniasis.

A heterologous prime-boost vaccination with DNA vectors and vaccinia virus recombinants (VVr) has been shown to enhance specific cellular immune responses and to elicit significant protection against pathogens in animal models. In this study, we have analyzed, in the leishmaniasis cutaneous murine model, the effectiveness of this prime-boost strategy by immunizing with a DNA vector followed by boost with a VVr expressing the same Leishmania infantum P36/LACK antigen. After DNA priming and VVr boost, we challenged susceptible BALB/c mice with live L. major promastigotes, and examined the increa

Discovery and Evaluation of SA-18 as an Anti-Toxoplasma Agent.

Toxoplasma gondii, a globally prevalent apicomplexan parasite, causes severe morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals and livestock. Current therapies exhibit limited efficacy against chronic bradyzoite stages and face drug resistance. Here, we screened imidocarb and its derivatives for anti-Toxoplasma activity. Among 20 synthesized compounds, squaramide derivative 18 (SA-18) emerged as a promising candidate with nanomolar EC50 against tachyzoites, potent inhibition of bradyzoite differentiation, and > 100-fold selectivity index. Transcriptomic analysis revealed transcriptional

Magnetic resonance imaging of parasitic tapeworm larvae Taenia crassiceps cysticerci in the peritoneal cavity of mice.

Because of their long T2 relaxation time (400 ms), larvae of the tapeworm Taenia crassiceps can be distinctly imaged in the mouse peritoneal cavity by NMR. An echo time of 400 ms sharply contrasted the parasites against the surrounding abdominal organs. A rapid, quantitative assay for parasite load can be obtained by recording the amplitude of a spin echo with no applied gradients at an echo time of 400-1000 ms. The T2 of the vesicular fluid of the human parasite Taenia solium was also long (600 ms), indicating that the same approach (long TE and long TR) can be used to image this parasite for

The influence of parasitic water mites on the instantaneous death rate of their hosts.

The effect of 2 species of water mites on the instantaneous death rate of their hosts was measured on the basis of laboratory experiments. In both parasite-host association - the parasitic water mite Hydryphantes tenuabilis on the aquatic insect host Hydrometra australis and the parasitic water mite Arrenurus pseudotenuicollis on the mosquito Anopheles crucians - the effect of mite load on the instantaneous death rate of the host appeared to be linear. Also, the impact of a single parasite on the host's death rate was apparently related to the ratio of parasite to host body weight. The results
