A giant mucocele eroded both the anterior and posterior wall of the frontal sinus and infiltrated the dura mater. Its extracranial growth caused a frontal bony prominence. The tumour and part of the dura were resected. A 12 x 6cm defect in the dura was repaired with a freeze-dried patch. A split-thickness bone graft from the right parietal region was used to repair the anterior frontal bony defect. The result one year later was satisfactory. Spiral computed tomography with thr ee-dimensional reconstructions excluded any recurrence of the tumour and showed good integration of bone grafts.

Cranial deformation was produced experimentally in rats 8 to 40 days old for the purpose of studying the rotation of the craniofacial bones and the modification of the growth rates of the functional cranial components. One hundred and twenty four skulls (65 males and 59 females) were employed, classified as: deformed , deformed-hydrocephalic, sham-operated and controls. A midsagittal diagram was drawn for each skull and the angle subtended by each bone with respect to the vestibular plane was measured. Growth indices were worked out for both the neural skull and the facial skull. Deformation a

INTRODUCTION: Little less than half of the occurrences acquired lumbar hernias are caused by traumatisms: direct parietal contusions, iliac crest biopsies or fractures. Regarding their frequency, they are rare but generally underdiagnosed. Abdominal wall reconstruction is motivated by the risk of hernia strangulation, but also aims to rebuild continent abdominal muscles, allowing the loss of discomfort or worsening risk as well as to resume physical activities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report a case of parietal reconstruction of a traumatism-induced lumbar hernia in a 59-year-old male patient

The surgical option to evacuate an intracranial extradural hematoma (EDH) was postponed in a 2-year-old female child who appeared fully alert and active after a brief spell of unconsciousness following a fall from height. The child was received, with a swelling on and around the right parietal eminence, by the emergency staff just half an hour after the time of injury. The immediate X-ray skull and first computed tomography (CT) scan head showed a parietal bone fracture, EDH, and cephalhematoma. However, follow-up CT scan head after about 4½ h revealed the dramatic absence of EDH but increased

A 9-year-old female spayed boxer presented for a dorsal cranial mass. Cytology diagnosed a sarcoma. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the head revealed a symmetrical, soft tissue attenuating mass with subtle mineralization and a contrast-enhancing capsule at the dorsal calvarium. There was adjacent frontal bone lysis and contrast enhancement of the parietal lobe. This supported a sarcoma of bone or cartilage origin. Postmortem examination additionally revealed a pulmonary tumor embolus. A final diagnosis of grade III multilobular osteochondrosarcoma (MLO) was made. This is the firs

Hemangioendotheliomas are highly vascularized lesions, and their intracranial presentation is extremely rare. We present the case of a 65-year-old female patient who was evaluated for cranial deformity, headache, and left hemiplegia. Two bone lesions that were destroying and expanding the bone diploe with intracranial extension were identified in the fronto-temporal and parietal regions. Both lesions were multilobed and showed heterogeneous behavior. Mixed hemangioendotheliomas were identified after the successful resection of both tumors in two separate surgical procedures. The prognosis of t

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is one of the most commonly encountered carcinomas; however, progression to invasive or locally advanced disease is extremely rare. The clinical course of locally advanced BCC is typically aggressive and has a poorer prognosis with variable survival. We present the case of a 58-year-old unhoused female with recurrent BCC of the left cranial vertex who underwent excision at an outside hospital. Intraoperative frozen section margins were negative for BCC; however, permanent sections demonstrated widespread residual tumor with morpheaform histology involving the parieta

Leptomeningeal cyst, also known as growing skull fracture in adults, is a very rare complication usually related to childhood head trauma. It is presumed to occur following a skull fracture during childhood associated with a Dural tear and projection of arachnoid membranes, which gradually erodes the fractured bone and grows aided by the normal pulsations of the brain. Here, we present a case of Type 1 leptomeningeal cyst in the left parietal bone in a 22-year-old male adult who presented years after sustaining head injury during his early childhood. Computed tomography scan was crucial in the

Multilobular tumour of bone (MTB) is an uncommon tumour and is usually located in the skull. A 13-year-old mixed breed dog was presented with a two-week history of progressively worsening vestibular dysfunction and cognitive abnormalities; it appeared demented and showed asymmetric ataxia and hypermetria of all limbs. The owner opted to have the animal euthanised. Necropsy revealed a large mass occupying the right occipital, parietal and temporal bones, severely compressing the cerebellum and the right occipital lobe. Histologically, it was characterised by the presence of multiple lobules con

Traumatic Brain Injury resulting from the impact of the human skull is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The knowledge of the biomechanics of such injuries is essential for the effective design of protective headgear. This study investigates the biomechanical responses of a human skull subjected to an impact with a rigid wall. Finite element analyses were performed by impacting various skull locations, and the utility concept approach was introduced to rank skull vulnerability. Time history plots of the velocity, acceleration and energy were extracted to determine the dynamic respo

Gorham-Stout Syndrome (GSS) is an exceedingly rare condition characterized by bone loss and lymphatic vessel proliferation and presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 29-year-old female with GSS manifesting as persistent headache and swelling in the left parietal bone. Initial misdiagnosis underscores the diagnostic complexity of GSS. Radiological imaging revealed characteristic features aiding in diagnosis, which were confirmed by histopathological examination showing bone tissue alterations consistent with GSS. Surgical resection and cranioplasty were success

Synthetic hair implantation was developed in the 1970s and initially gained popularity until major cutaneous complications, such as facial swelling, severe dermatitis, recurrent cellulitis, and cicatricial alopecia, became an issue. In particular, the procedure has been suggested to have a possible causal relationship with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This article describes the third reported case in the English literature of SCC arising in a site of synthetic hair grafts. The patient was an 80-year-old man with a prominent verrucous tumor in the parietal region; he had undergone synthetic h

Calvarial abnormalities are usually discovered incidentally on radiologic studies or less commonly manifest with symptoms. This narrative review describes the imaging spectrum of the abnormal calvaria. The extent, multiplicity, and other imaging features of calvarial abnormalities can be combined with the clinical information to establish a final diagnosis or at least narrow the differential considerations. Prior trauma (congenital depression, leptomeningeal cysts, posttraumatic osteolysis), surgical intervention (flap osteonecrosis and burr holes), infection, and inflammatory processes (sarco

Using a Cre-mediated conditional deletion approach, we have dissected the function of Twist1 in the morphogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton. Loss of Twist1 in neural crest cells and their derivatives impairs skeletogenic differentiation and leads to the loss of bones of the snout, upper face and skull vault. While no anatomically recognizable maxilla is formed, a malformed mandible is present. Since Twist1 is expressed in the tissues of the maxillary eminence and the mandibular arch, this finding suggests that the requirement for Twist1 is not the same in all neural crest derivatives. The e

'Ping-pong' fractures are depressed skull fractures in newborn infants that occur as inward buckling of the calvarial bones, forming a cup shape. These fractures are often associated with maintenance of bone continuity. These fractures may occur spontaneously during the intrauterine period or secondary to birth trauma. Currently, there is no standard protocol for the management of depressed skull fractures. Neurosurgical or non-surgical approaches may be administered depends on the severity of the fracture. Most untreated ping-pong fractures resolve spontaneously within 6 months. Therefore, it

Depressed skull fractures compromise 7-10% of the children admitted to hospital with a head injury. Depressed skull fractures that occur in children younger than 1 year are different from those found in older children. In neonates and infants, a depressed fracture forms an inward buckling of the bones forming a 'cup shape', termed a 'ping-pong fracture'. In neonates, spontaneous elevation of a ping-pong fracture after birth trauma is well documented. However, in infants, spontaneous elevation of a ping-pong fracture following head injury is extremely rare. Here, we present the case of an 11-mo

Use of a scalp electrode facilitates and adds precision to electronic fetal monitoring. We report an instance of neonatal osteomyelitis due to infection of the electrode insertion site. Electrode-associated soft and bony tissue infections are most commonly mediated by cervicovaginal microflora and appear clinically and microbiologically distinct from non-electrode-associated cases. Risk assessment, antiseptic care, and observation of the electrode insertion site are recommended. This report emphasizes the potential morbidity of scalp electrode use and suggests means to prevent or mitigate this

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare skeletal dysplasia characterised by a defect in ossification. Frequently reported clinical findings are delayed closure of the fontanelles and cranial sutures, hypoplastic clavicles, dental abnormalities and short stature. Our patient suffered from complete absence of ossification of both parietal bones. This is a rare and severe defect that has been reported in only a few patients with CCD.
