Brain areas activated by uncertain reward-based decision-making in healthy volunteers.

Reward-based decision-making has been found to activate several brain areas, including the ventrolateral prefrontal lobe, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, ventral striatum, and mesolimbic dopaminergic system. In this study, we observed brain areas activated under three degrees of uncertainty in a reward-based decision-making task (certain, risky, and ambiguous). The tasks were presented using a brain function audiovisual stimulation system. We conducted brain scans of 15 healthy volunteers using a 3.0T magnetic resonance scanner. We used SPM8 to analyze the location and intensi

Cerebral correlates of imitation of intransitive gestures: An integrative review of neuroimaging data and brain lesion studies.

The aim of the present review is to investigate the cerebral correlates, more particularly the role of the parietal lobe, when imitating intransitive gestures, a task highly sensitive to apraxic errors. By providing an integrative review of functional imaging and brain lesion studies, we focused our attention on the meaning of gestures (meaningful and meaningless) and the body parts (finger and hand). We found that imitation of intransitive gestures is relying upon a bilateral brain network including fronto-parietal areas irrespective of meaning or body parts. Moreover, we observed that while

Localization in impaired spatial vision.

The present study provides clear clinico-anatomical evidence for localization of the spatial vision pathway. We report the case of a 29-year-old woman with severe spatial vision impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed distinct bilateral and symmetrical occipito-parietal damage. The right lesion affected the superior parietal lobule, the dorsolateral portion of the occipital lobe, the precuneus, and the cuneus. The left lesion affected the superior parietal lobule, the dorsolateral portion of the occipital lobe, the precuneus, an upper part of the cuneus, and the posterior portion of th

Altered Functional Connectivity Patterns of Parietal Subregions Contribute to Cognitive Dysfunction in Patients with White Matter Hyperintensities.

BACKGROUND: The white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are considered as one of the core neuroimaging findings of cerebral small vessel disease and independently associated with cognitive deficit. The parietal lobe is a heterogeneous area containing many subregions and play an important role in the processes of neurocognition. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between parietal subregions alterations and cognitive impairments in WHMs. METHODS: Resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) analyses of parietal subregions were performed in 104 right-handed WMHs patients divided into mild (n

[A case of transient tic disorder with abnormal findings on 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT].

We report a case of transient tic disorder with abnormal findings on 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT. The patient was 5-year-old girl with vocal and motor tic. There was no evidence of structural abnormality on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Electroencephalogram (EEG) showed spikes and sharp waves on both frontal lobes and parietal lobes (left-side dominant). 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT demonstrated focal regions of hyperperfusion in the both frontal lobes, both parietal lobes and right temporal lobe corresponding to the abnormal findings detected by EEG. It also demonstrated an area of hyperperfusion in the right

Brief asymmetric tonic posturing with diffuse low-voltage fast activity in seizures arising from the mesial parietal region.

AIM: Seizures originating from the parietal lobe can demonstrate variable semiology. Our aim was to describe the electroclinical features of seizures originating from the mesial parietal lobe. METHOD: We identified four patients through the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at our institution, who had strong evidence of a mesial parietal source for their epilepsy, including a mesial parietal structural lesion. RESULTS: Patients had very frequent brief seizures despite anticonvulsants, each lasting 10-30s, with rapid return of awareness post-event. Clinically attacks were bland, or showed asymme

The relationship between neuropsychological tests of visuospatial function and lobar cortical thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Tests of visuospatial function are often administered in comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations. These tests are generally considered assays of parietal lobe function; however, the neural correlates of these tests, using modern imaging techniques, are not well understood. In the current study we investigated the relationship between three commonly used tests of visuospatial function and lobar cortical thickness in each hemisphere. METHOD: Data from 374 patients who underwent a neuropsychological evaluation and MRI scans in an outpatient dementia clinic were included in the

Abnormal voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity in first-episode, drug-naïve patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Prior studies suggest that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can cause both anatomical and functional variations in the brain, but to date, altered functional synchronization between two functional hemispheres remains unclear in OCD patients. Voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) is defined as the temporal correlation of spontaneous low-frequency blood oxygenation level-dependent signal fluctuations across mirror regions of hemisphere revealing the homotopic connectivity between each voxel in one hemisphere and its mirrored counterpart in the contralateral hemisphere. To investigate t

Limb Pain as Unusual Presentation of a Parietal Intraparenchymal Bleeding Associated with Crack Cocaine Use: A Case Report.

Limb pain as a presenting feature of an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke is extremely rare. Here we present a case of a 65-year-old male with complaints of left arm pain and allodynia (specifically light touch to any part of the left arm produced significant discomfort) who was found to have a right parietal lobe intraparenchymal bleed after smoking crack cocaine. Acute central pain is mainly associated with parietal, thalamic, and brainstem lesions. It has been proposed that acute limb pain from a parietal lobe stroke is due to the disconnection of the parietal cortex from the thalamus secondar

Spatial-temporal representation of cortical neural activity evoked by acupuncture stimulation.

UNLABELLED: Acupuncture modulates cognitive functions through acupoint stimulation and demonstrates significant regulatory effects on brain disorders. However, the underlying neurodynamic mechanisms of acupuncture remain unclear due to a lack of effective measures of brain activity. In this study, we developed an acupuncture-related potential (ARP) method based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) to elucidate the dynamic representation mechanisms underlying acupuncture stimulation. By analyzing ARP signal features and functional networks to capture stimulus-evoked brain activity, we derived spatiote

Rub epilepsy in an infant with Turner syndrome.

We report a case of infantile refractory epilepsy associated with Turner syndrome (TS), showing very frequent, focal clonic seizures of the left upper extremity. Characteristically, in addition to spontaneous fits, her seizure was inducible by rubbing her left hand and forearm for a few seconds. Accordingly, she was diagnosed with a rare form of reflex epilepsy, "rub epilepsy". Neuroradiological investigation indicated the existence of cortical abnormalities, such as focal cortical dysplasia of the right parietal lobe. Patients with TS are reported to have neuroanatomical abnormalities, especi

Computation of tactile object properties requires the integrity of praxic skills.

We describe a series of experiments to examine the tactile identification of objects over the course of neurological recovery in a patient with an intracerebral haemorrhage involving the left inferior and superior parietal lobe. Tactile agnosia in this case involved the ipsilesional as well as the contralesional hand, allowing us to observe the effects of dominant parietal lobe damage without the confounding effects of hemiparesis. The findings demonstrate that both apraxia and tactile apperceptive agnosia may result from a unilateral lesion involving the left parietal lobe. The findings furth

Behavioral abnormalities after right hemisphere stroke.

We evaluated 41 patients with unilateral right hemisphere strokes for hemiparesis, hemianopia, constructional apraxia, neglect, extinction, unilateral spatial neglect on drawing (USND), dressing apraxia, anosognosia, prosopagnosia, and motor impersistence. Low correlations were found among USND, neglect, and extinction. Constructional apraxia showed a higher correlation with USND than with hemianopia. Motor impersistence and anosognosia correlated with the severity of the hemiplegia. Left neglect, motor impersistence, and anosognosia tended to occur only with large strokes. Injury to the right

Valproate-induced metabolic changes in patients with epilepsy: assessment with H-MRS.

PURPOSE: Valproate (VPA) interferes with mitochondrial metabolism causing hyperammonemia, thereby shifting the balance reaction of glutamine (Gln)/glutamate (Glu) toward Gln. In this study we wanted to determine whether metabolic changes could be reproduced in VPA-treated patients with epilepsy and whether the results differed from those known in chronic hepatic encephalopathy (CHE). METHODS: Seven patients with epilepsy pretreated with VPA and seven healthy volunteers were investigated on a 3T-scanner. We performed proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) using a short echo time poi

Three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection SPECT analysis in Parkinson's disease with and without dementia.

We investigated regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection (3D-SSP) analysis in 30 patients initially diagnosed as Parkinson's disease (PD), and compared differences in rCBF between patients with and without PD-related manifestations. 3D-SSP analysis of cerebral perfusion was performed by use of a control database. Compared to age-matched controls, there were multiple hypoperfusion areas in cases where the original diagnosis was PD. Temporal bases showed the lowest perfusion; frontal bases and medial parietal lobes the second; visual cortices th

Decoding speech intent from non-frontal cortical areas.

Objective. Brain machine interfaces (BMIs) that can restore speech have predominantly focused on decoding speech signals from the speech motor cortices. A few studies have shown some information outside the speech motor cortices, such as in parietal and temporal lobes, that also may be useful for BMIs. The ability to use information from outside the frontal lobe could be useful not only for people with locked-in syndrome, but also to people with frontal lobe damage, which can cause nonfluent aphasia or apraxia of speech. However, temporal and parietal lobes are predominantly involved in percep
