Polycystic Kidney Disease in 3 Juvenile Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus).

This case series describes polycystic kidney disease in 3 (2 male, 1 female) 2-month-old, juvenile rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus). The lorikeets diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease were the progeny of full sibling parents that were being intentionally line bred for the purpose of establishing a rainbow lorikeet with the blue color mutation. Clinically the juvenile lorikeets were presented with clinical signs of lethargy, dehydration, regurgitation, anorexia, polyuria, and pelvic limb paresis. Multiple abnormalities were identified on the complete blood count and plasma bioch

Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 5 infection in Indian ringneck parakeets in southern California.

Four Indian ringneck parakeets (Psittacula krameri; syn. ringneck parrots or rose-ringed parakeets) were submitted by 2 private owners for autopsy following a history of dyspnea and death. Gross findings were varied and included thickening of the left caudal thoracic air sac, white spots throughout the liver, mild dilation of the proventriculus, coelomic effusion, splenomegaly, and pulmonary congestion and edema. Microscopically, the submitted parakeets had significant lesions in the lower respiratory tract, including necrotizing bronchitis, parabronchitis, and interstitial pneumonia with nume

Nail relocation by nail flap in digital injuries.

In circumstances where the nail complex is intact and undamaged it may be wiser to relocate the nail as a flap based on its vascular supply rather than resort to pulp replacement procedures such as a cross-finger flap or similar techniques which leave a hyposensitive pulp and a "parrot-beak" deformity of the nail. In "acute" finger injuries this procedure is decidedly preferable to amputation through the head of the middle phalanx.

Diversity of Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) in Two Different Eco-Climatic and Endemic Zones of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Mali, West Africa.

Being the only established vectors of the protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania, sand flies have become very important in all countries where leishmaniasis exists. To better understand the sand fly fauna, a taxonomic inventory study was carried out between January and March 2012 in Soudan savannah (Boundioba, Sikasso) and Sahelian (Tieneguebougou, Koulikoro) areas of Mali. CDC light traps were used to collect the sand flies. Collected sand flies specimens were cleaned with lacto-phenol and examined under a light microscope for species identification. In total, 14 species belonging to the

Vocal imitations and production learning by Australian musk ducks (Biziura lobata).

Acquiring vocalizations by learning them from other individuals is only known from a limited number of animal groups. For birds, oscine and some suboscine songbirds, parrots and hummingbirds demonstrate this ability. Here, we provide evidence for vocal learning in a member of a basal clade of the avian phylogeny: the Australian musk duck (Biziura lobata). A hand-reared individual imitated a slamming door and a human voice, and a female-reared individual imitated Pacific black duck quacks. These sounds have been described before, but were never analysed in any detail and went so far unnoticed b

Cerebral baylisascariosis in a rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) in a German Zoo.

BACKGROUND: The raccoon roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis, can cause a meningoencephalitis as neural larva migrans which is known in avian species, including rainbow lorikeets in North America, but has not been described in Old World parrots in Germany yet. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-month-old, male rainbow lorikeet from a zoo in Germany was submitted for necropsy. Prior to death the animal had progressive neurological signs like apathy and torticollis. In the cerebrum a focally extensive severe granulomatous to necrotizing encephalitis with an intralesional larval nematode was diagnosed. Based

EVALUATION OF CLINICAL DIAGNOSTICS FOR PROVENTRICULAR NEMATODIASIS DUE TO SYNHIMANTUS NASUTA IN LORIKEETS (TRICHOGLOSSUS SPP.).

In this case series, clinical investigations were pursued during a Synhimantus nasuta infection in a lorikeet (Trichoglossus spp.) flock outbreak situation to better describe and document clinical presentations. In 11 lorikeets suspected to be infected with Synhimantus based on at least one abnormal finding on their physical examination (lethargy, feather-damaging behavior on the ventrum, weight loss, pale iris), the presence of five additional parameters was documented: anemia, relative eosinophilia, increased proventricular diameter-to-keel height ratio (PKR), proventricular barium filling d

Melioidosis in a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita).

A case of melioidosis in a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) kept as a pet in Townsville is described. This case was characterised by liver necrosis with both a heterophil and mononuclear cell inflammatory response associated with giant cells. Pseudomonas pseudomallei was isolated by blood plate culture and guinea pig inoculation. This is the first case of melioidosis reported in a native bird in Australia.

Chlamydia psittaci in fulmars on the Faroe Islands: a causative link to South American psittacines eight decades after a severe epidemic.

A psittacosis epidemic linked to fulmar hunting occurred on the Faroe Islands in the 1930s. This study investigates a plausible explanation to the 20% human mortality in this outbreak. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Chlamydia psittaci isolated from fulmars were closely related to the highly virulent 6BC strains from psittacines and are compatible with an acquisition by fulmars of an ancestor of the 6BC clade in the 1930s. This supports the hypothesis that the outbreak on the Faroe Islands started after naïve fulmars acquired C. psittaci from infected dead parrots thrown overboard when shipp

Biological activity of parrodienes, a new class of polyunsaturated linear aldehydes similar to carotenoids.

A new chemical named parrodienes has been extracted from parrots' plumage. From the chemical point of view, parrodienes are polyunsaturated aldehydes similar to carotenoids. On the basis of this similarity we organized some biological experiments to evaluate the inhibition of lipoperoxidation of cell membranes induced by CCl4, protection against ultraviolet rays, anti-inflammatory activity and protection from an increase of ornithine-decarboxylase as marker of tumoral skin alteration. The results of these experiments showed that unsaturated dienes (parrodienes) play an important role on the in

Viral vector vaccines expressing nucleoprotein and phosphoprotein genes of avian bornaviruses ameliorate homologous challenge infections in cockatiels and common canaries.

Avian bornaviruses are causative agents of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), an often fatal disease of parrots and related species (order Psittaciformes) which is widely distributed in captive psittacine populations and may affect endangered species. Here, we established a vaccination strategy employing two different well described viral vectors, namely recombinant Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) that were engineered to express the phosphoprotein and nucleoprotein genes of two avian bornaviruses, parrot bornavirus 4 (PaBV-4) and canary bornavirus 2

Beak and feather disease virus variant-dependent antibody reactivity in naturally infected psittacine birds.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV, species Circovirus parrot) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), characterised primary by death of nestlings, feather loss and presumed immunosuppression in parrots worldwide. BFDV shows marked genetic heterogeneity, particularly in the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) encoding the capsid protein (Cap), but the impact of this diversity on antibody recognition has not been systematically assessed. In this study, we used seven recombinant Cap proteins derived from ORF2 variants selected to reflect the diversity of BFDV genotypes ci

The lungs of the finch: three-dimensional pulmonary anatomy of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia castanotis).

The avian respiratory system has been an area of biological interest for centuries, with zebra finches (Taeniopygia castanotis) emerging in recent decades as a primary avian model organism popularized across numerous disciplines. The pulmonary system of birds is unique in that air moves unidirectionally through the gas-exchanging lung, and previous works have suggested anatomical constraints within the bronchial network that may be coupled to the inspiratory valving mechanism in Aves. We used µCT-based segmented models to visualize and describe the morphology of the zebra finch lower respirato

[Epidemiologic significance of the immunofluorescence typing of Chlamydia psittaci].

A group of 39 strains isolated from pigeons, parakeets, parrots, sheep, goats, cats, guinea-pigs, mice and humans were immunotyped by a one-way or two-way cross-reaction micro-immunofluorescence test. Eight immunotypes were found. Among them, two new immunotypes were characterized: a cat conjunctivitis strain and a mouse inapparent respiratory infection strain. The immunotypes of feline pneumonitis and guinea-pig conjunctivitis, recently described by Perez-Martinez and Storz, were confirmed. Three human strains were similar to avian isolates, while a fourth was identical to that of feline pneu

First record of Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese, 1888) (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) parasitizing invasive monk parakeets in Santiago, Chile.

Myiopsitta monachus is an invasive psittacine with wide distribution due to the pet trade. Its large communal nests and synanthropic nature contribute to its successful colonization of cities, from where it seems to be expanding in range and numbers. This is relevant with regard to pathogens that invasive species may harbor, especially when host populations thrive. We aimed to identify an abundant mite found in invasive monk parakeet chicks that had been collected in Santiago during 2017 and 2018. Through morphological and molecular identification of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene, we confirmed th

SEABIRDS AS POSSIBLE RESERVOIRS OF ERYSIPELOTHRIX RHUSIOPATHIAE ON ISLANDS USED FOR CONSERVATION TRANSLOCATIONS IN NEW ZEALAND.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative agent of the disease erysipelas, is a gram-positive bacillus, and an opportunistic pathogen in diverse species of animals. In New Zealand, E. rhusiopathiae has killed endangered birds on offshore islands, including Kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), Takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri), and Kiwi (Apteryx spp.). The source of infection is uncertain, and the prevalence of E. rhusiopathiae among wild birds is currently unknown. During October 2018 to December 2018, we surveyed dead and live seabirds that visit two of New Zealand's offshore islands used for Kākāp
