Levels of pesticide residues in the blood of ortolan buntings (Emberiza hortulana), skylarks (Alauda arvensis) and yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) from Sweden.

Bird declines in European farmland have been linked to pesticide-driven food depletion and chronic exposure to pesticides well below levels causing acute toxicity. Yet, the extent of bird contamination by plant protection products remains largely unknown, partly because existing biomonitoring methods require relatively large blood volumes. Here, we developed a novel blood microsampling procedure (8 µl) combined with LC-MS/MS screening of 104 pesticides to determine exposure in nestling yellowhammers Emberiza citrinella (N = 5) and skylarks Alauda arvensis (N = 40) as well as adult ortolan bunt

Nest secondary plants and their associations with haemosporidian blood parasites in blue tit females.

Avian nests often contain aromatic plant fragments, which has led to propose among others that they repel ectoparasites or vectors of blood parasites (‘nest protection hypothesis’). To date, the relationship between secondary plant provisioning and the parent's blood parasites remains unexplored. We investigated whether the presence of secondary plants in nests during different reproductive stages (before incubation, during incubation and nestling period) was associated with the presence of nest-dwelling ectoparasites and females’ blood-parasite infections in blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) du

Repeated evolution on oceanic islands: comparative genomics reveals species-specific processes in birds.

Understanding the interplay between genetic drift, natural selection, gene flow, and demographic history in driving phenotypic and genomic differentiation of insular populations can help us gain insight into the speciation process. Comparing patterns across different insular taxa subjected to similar selective pressures upon colonizing oceanic islands provides the opportunity to study repeated evolution and identify shared patterns in their genomic landscapes of differentiation. We selected four species of passerine birds (Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs/canariensis, Red-billed Chough Pyrrh

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Galapagos birds: Inference of risk factors associated with diet.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic intracellular parasite of particular concern in the conservation of wildlife due to its ability to infect all homeotherms and potentially cause acute fatal disease in naive species. In the Galapagos (Ecuador), an archipelago composed of more than a hundred islets and islands, the presence of T. gondii can be attributed to human-introduced domestic cats, but little is known about its transmission in wildlife populations. We compared the prevalence of antibodies against T. gondii in sympatric Galapagos wild bird species that differ in diet and contact with oocyst-

EFFECTS OF MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM INFECTION ON PREENING BEHAVIORS AND FEATHER QUALITY IN HOUSE FINCHES (HAEMORHOUS MEXICANUS).

Infections can have far-reaching sublethal effects on wildlife, including reduced maintenance of external structures. For many wildlife taxa, daily maintenance of external structures (termed preening in birds) is critical to fitness, but few studies have examined how infections alter such maintenance. Mycoplasma gallisepticum is a common pathogen in free-living House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), where it causes mycoplasmal conjunctivitis. Despite documented behavioral changes associated with M. gallisepticum infections in finches, no studies have examined how preening behavior may change wi

A Helminth Survey of Northern Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) and Passerines in the Rolling Plains Ecoregion of Texas.

The Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) is a popular game bird that has been experiencing a well-documented decline throughout Texas since the 1960s. While much of this decline has been attributed to habitat loss and fragmentation, recent studies have identified other factors that may also contribute to decreasing quail populations. Parasites, in particular, have become increasingly recognized as possible stressors of quail, and some species, particularly the eyeworm (Oxyspirura petrowi) and cecal worm (Aulonocephalus pennula) are highly prevalent in Texas quails. Eyeworm infection h

Distribution, redescription, and molecular identification of Isospora striata McQuistion et al. 1997 (Eimeriidae), from woodcreepers (Dendrocolaptidae) in South America.

Woodcreepers are passerines of the family Dendrocolaptidae, which have a high forest dependency. The current work aimed to redescribe Isospora striata McQuistion et al. 1997, from two new hosts in protected areas in Brazil, revealing new localities of parasitism, in addition to providing preliminary genotypic identifications via sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene from both host species. Isospora striata has oocysts that are subspheroidal to ovoidal, 19.4 × 16.8 μm with smooth wall. Oocyst residuum is absent, but micropyle and polar granules are present. S

Recovery of hematocrit and fat deposits varies by cage size in food-restricted captive red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra).

Hematocrit-or the percent volume of red blood cells in whole blood-is thought to fluctuate adaptively in response to changing oxygen demands that occur during different life activities and in different environments. Because red blood cells are made from materials that can be limiting, however, it is thought that hematocrit may also reflect general body condition and access to resources. We tested the effect of hydration state, resource restriction (i.e., time available to forage), and activity (i.e., different cage sizes) on hematocrit in captive red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra). We found no

Wild corvid birds colonized with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium of human origin harbor epidemic vanA plasmids.

The most prevalent type of acquired vancomycin resistance in Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) is encoded by the vanA transposon Tn1546, mainly located on transferable plasmids. vanA plasmids have been characterized in VREfm from a variety of sources but not wild birds. The aim of this study was to analyse the genetic context of VREfm strains recovered from wild corvid birds and to compare their plasmid and strain characteristics with human strains. To achieve that, 75 VREfm isolates, including strains from wild birds recovered during wide surveillance studies performed in Europe, Canada and the Un

WEST NILE VIRUS-RELATED TRENDS IN AVIAN MORTALITY IN CALIFORNIA, USA, 2003-12.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an arbovirus transmitted enzootically by Culex mosquitoes among avian hosts. Since 2000, the California Dead Bird Surveillance Program (DBSP) has tracked avian mortality reported by the public on a telephone hotline and website and measured the prevalence of WNV infection in dead birds. We summarize herein WNV prevalence in dead birds tested and variation of WNV transmission over time and space with the use of DBSP data from 2003 to 2012. Prevalence among dead birds was highest in 2004, 2008, and 2012. This pattern was similar to peak WNV infection years for mosquitoes

Translational research into intertemporal choice: the Western scrub-jay as an animal model for future-thinking.

Decisions often involve outcomes that will not materialise until later, and choices between immediate gratification and future consequences are thought to be important for human health and welfare. Combined human and animal research has identified impulsive intertemporal choice as an important factor in drug-taking and pathological gambling. In this paper, we give an overview of recent research into intertemporal choice in non-human animals, and argue that this work could offer insight into human behaviour through the development of animal models. As an example, we discuss the role of future-t

West Nile virus in the vertebrate world.

West Nile virus (WNV), an arthropod-borne virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae, had been recognized in Africa, Asia and the south of Europe for many decades. Only recently, it has been associated with an increasing number of outbreaks of encephalitis in humans and equines as well as an increasing number of infections in vertebrates of a wide variety of species. In this article, the data available on the incidence of WNV in vertebrates are reviewed. Moreover, the role of vertebrates in the transmission of WNV, the control of WNV infections in veterinary medicine as well as future perspect

Eastern equine encephalitis virus and identification of host bloodmeal sources from individual Culiseta melanura (Diptera: Culicidae) at an enzootic focus in central New York State.

Toward a more detailed understanding of the Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) cycle, individual blood-fed Culiseta melanura (Coquillett) mosquitoes were collected at an enzootic focus in New York State. Blooded females were tested for EEEV by multiplex real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, qRT-PCR. Host bloodmeals were identified using DNA amplification and sequencing of the cytochrome B gene. In 2018, 577 individual mosquitoes were tested. Virus was detected in the bodies of 16, of which two had the virus in their legs. In 2022, 606 individual mosquito

Review of 23 cases of postintubation tracheal obstructions in birds.

Although recognized as a potential complication after endotracheal intubation in birds, the complication rate of postintubation tracheal obstruction in this taxon is unknown. Twenty-three cases of postintubation obstruction in birds from two institutions are reported. Clinical signs were noted an average of 16.6 days postintubation and consisted primarily of indications of acute respiratory distress. Diagnosis was confirmed via tracheoscopy or radiology. Five birds died before treatment could be initiated. Medical treatment alone was successful in three birds that had mild changes consisting p

Corticosterone effects on aggression in a passerine species, the common waxbill Estrilda astrild.

Glucocorticoids mediate behavioral and physiological responses to environmental stressors, supporting individuals' survival and fitness. Corticosterone, as the primary avian glucocorticoid, modulates these physiological responses. We focus on the common waxbill Estrilda astrild, a highly social and gregarious passerine that feeds and flocks together year-round, providing an excellent model to explore the impact of glucocorticoids on social behavior, especially in aggression. To investigate this, we conducted a correlational study in captive birds, examining baseline corticosterone plasma level

Seasonal adjustments in body mass and basal thermogenesis in Chinese hwameis (Garrulax canorus): the roles of temperature and photoperiod.

For small birds to survive during seasonal acclimatization in temperate zones, regulation of body mass and thermogenesis is crucial. To determine the role of temperature and photoperiod in seasonal changes in body mass and thermogenesis in Chinese hwameis (Garrulax canorus), we compared body mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), energy intake and cellular metabolic capacity of the tissue (muscle) and/or organs (liver, kidney, heart and small intestine) in seasonally acclimatized and laboratory-acclimated hwameis. A significant seasonal influence on body mass and BMR (which peaked in winter) was fo

The life-cycle of the avian haemosporidian parasite Haemoproteus majoris, with emphasis on the exoerythrocytic and sporogonic development.

BACKGROUND: Haemoproteus parasites (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae) are cosmopolitan in birds and recent molecular studies indicate enormous genetic diversity of these pathogens, which cause diseases in non-adapted avian hosts. However, life-cycles remain unknown for the majority of Haemoproteus species. Information on their exoerythrocytic development is particularly fragmental and controversial. This study aimed to gain new knowledge on life-cycle of the widespread blood parasite Haemoproteus majoris. METHODS: Turdus pilaris and Parus major naturally infected with lineages hPHYBOR04 and hPARU

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infecting Ixodes auritulus ticks in Uruguay.

In the southern cone of South America different haplotypes of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) have been detected in Ixodes spp. from Argentina, southern Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay. So far, Lyme borreliosis has not been diagnosed in Uruguay and the medical relevance of the genus Ixodes in South America is uncertain. However, the growing number of new genospecies of Bbsl in the southern cone region and the scarce information about its pathogenicity, reservoirs and vectors, highlights the importance of further studies about spirochetes present in Uruguay and the region. The aim of this stu

Mechanisms underlying parasite infection: influence of host body mass and age on chewing louse distribution among brown-headed cowbirds.

Animal populations exhibit various patterns in ectoparasite distribution across different sexes and age classes, and numerous factors can potentially contribute to ectoparasite abundance and distribution. We examined the influence of host body size and age on the distribution of a chewing louse among brown-headed cowbirds. Differences in louse prevalence (males 62.9 ± 2.8%, females 47.5 ± 4.9%) and intensity (males 15.42 ± 1.51, females 9.04 ± 1.69) were primarily driven by differences in host body mass and not host sex. Larger birds had larger louse infra-populations, which likely translated
