Explores the Relationship Between Serum Pepsinogen Levels and Gastric Mucosal Changes in Relation to Helicobacter pylori Status in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II are widely used as diagnostic markers in gastric mucosal diseases such as gastric atrophy and pangastritis, and in assessing the risk of progression to gastric cancer. This study assesses the relationship between serum pepsinogen levels and changes in the gastric mucosa and stomach lining, stratified by Helicobacter pylori status. We also evaluate the significance of the serum pepsinogen ratio (PGI/PGII ratio) as a biomarker of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia that may progress to gastric cancer. METHODS: A total of 84 patients presenting

Feasibility and cost-effectiveness of using magnification chromoendoscopy and pepsinogen serum levels for the follow-up of patients with atrophic chronic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia.

BACKGROUND: The follow-up of patients with atrophic chronic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia may lead to early diagnosis of gastric cancer. However, to-date no cost-effective model has been proposed. Improved endoscopic examination using magnification chromoendoscopy together with non-invasive functional assessment with pepsinogen serum levels are accurate in the diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia (extension) and minute dysplastic lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of a follow-up model for patients with atrophic chronic gastritis and intestina

Persistently increased gastrin and decreased pepsinogen concentrations in serum from some patients with Graves' disease of triiodothyronine-predominant type and common type.

This study aimed to investigate the cause of persistently increased serum gastrin concentration seen in some Graves' disease patients even when euthyroid during antithyroid drug treatment. The subjects studied consisted of three groups: 33 patients with a common-type of Graves' disease, 14 with triiodothyronine (T3)-predominant Graves' disease (characterized from previous studies as having potent immunologic abnormalities including greater concentrations of thyroid-stimulating antibodies together with larger goiter size), and a group of 20 normal subjects. Fasting serum gastrin concentrations

Life events stress and psychosocial factors in men with peptic ulcer disease. II. Relationships with serum pepsinogen concentrations and behavioral risk factors.

We examined in a controlled study whether psychologic disturbances in men with peptic ulcer disease were related to other potential ulcer "risk factors" (serum pepsinogen concentrations, cigarette smoking, and intake of alcohol, aspirin, or coffee). Psychopathology in general, personality features of hostility, irritability, and hypersensitivity, and impaired coping ability (low ego strength) each correlated significantly with serum pepsinogen concentration in ulcer patients (p less than or equal to 0.005). Cigarette smoking and intake of alcohol and aspirin were increased in ulcer patients bu

Behaviour of acid secretion, gastrin release, serum pepsinogen I, and gastric emptying of liquids over six months from eradication of helicobacter pylori in duodenal ulcer patients. A controlled study.

The behaviour of basal and stimulated acid secretion, gastrin release, serum pepsinogen I, and gastric emptying of liquids was studied in 19 consecutive patients with Helicobacter pylori positive duodenal ulcer, over a follow up period of six months. Eleven patients were studied before and at three and six months after eradication with lansoprazole plus amoxicillin and tinidazole (case group), whereas the remainder, with persistent H pylori infection, were studied before and after three and six months from ulcer healing, thus constituting the control group. In the case group, three months afte

Serum pepsinogens can help to discriminate between H. pylori-induced and auto-immune atrophic gastritis: Results from a prospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Serum pepsinogen (PG) testing is recommended by the European guidelines for diagnosis of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). However, wide variations in diagnostic performances are observed, due to the differences in the extent of gastric atrophy, and possibly in its origin (Helicobacter pylori-, autoimmune (AIG)). AIM: To analyze the diagnostic performances of PGs testing according to these different parameters, using enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay (ELISA) and chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLEIA). METHODS: Serum samples from patients having undergone gastroscopy with

Cancer high-risk subjects identified by serum pepsinogen tests: outcomes after 10-year follow-up in asymptomatic middle-aged males.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer screening using the pepsinogen filter test is receiving wide recognition in Japan owing to convenience, freedom from discomfort or risk, efficiency, and economy. Because the long-term outcomes of cancer development in extensive atrophic gastritis detected by pepsinogen test are unclear, test-positive and test-negative subjects were investigated in a longitudinal cohort study. METHODS: Subjects comprised 5,209 middle-aged men with measured serum pepsinogen levels who were followed for 10 years. Cancer development based on "atrophy-positive" and "atrophy-negative" cri

O6-methylguanine in blood leucocyte DNA: an association with the geographic prevalence of gastric cancer and with low levels of serum pepsinogen A, a marker of severe chronic atrophic gastritis. The EUROGAST Study Group.

Using a competitive repair assay, 407 samples of peripheral blood leucocyte DNA from randomly selected subjects in 17 populations were tested for the presence of the adduct O6-methylguanine. With a limit of assay sensitivity of 0.05 fmol/micrograms DNA, the adduct was detected in 21 samples (5%). Sixteen positive samples came from 102 tested (16%) from two populations, in Japan and Portugal, with extremely high gastric cancer rates. This was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than the three positive samples out of 216 tested (1%) from populations with low or intermediate rates of gastric cancer.
