BACKGROUND: Community-based organizations interested in members' health may lack data to develop culturally-appropriate, evidence-based interventions. Community leaders perceived the need for a health survey, developed and administered in partnership with research scientists, to address mental health concerns of black African immigrants and refugees (principally depression).
OBJECTIVES: The goals of the project were: development of a community health survey for African immigrant and refugee populations; translation, piloting and administering the survey, and descriptive analyses and dissemina

BACKGROUND: Everyday discrimination is a pervasive social stressor that has been linked to adverse health outcomes and contributes to persistent health inequities in the United States. Understanding contemporary patterns of discrimination across racial and ethnic groups remains an important public health priority. Our study examined racial and ethnic differences in multiple forms of everyday discrimination among U.S. adults.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2023 National Health Interview Survey, a national U.S. sample of non-institutionalized adults aged ≥ 18 years. The analytic sample inclu

Young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH) are at high risk for discrimination. Limited research has documented the extent of discrimination experiences and their relationship to mental health outcomes among this group. This study used data from YAEH who completed self-administered surveys across seven U.S. cities (N = 1,426) to examine the rates and correlates of discrimination experiences and their association with psychological distress and suicidal ideation. Chi-square and multivariate logistic regressions were used to examine the relations between perceived discrimination and race, gen

OBJECTIVE: Racial discrimination is increasingly recognized as a contributor to increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among African Americans. Previous research has shown significant overlap between racial discrimination and hostility, an established predictor of CVD risk including alterations in adrenergic receptor functioning. The present study examined the associations of racial discrimination and hostility with adrenergic receptor responsiveness.
METHODS: In a sample (N = 57) of young to middle-aged African American adults (51% female) with normal and mildly elevated blood pressure,

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532025eng
OBJECTIVE: Racially marginalized adolescents are exposed to online racism, yet little is known about assets and resources that may effectively resist the negative influence of online racism and with what effect. Based on risk and resilience theory, the current study examined the compensatory and protective roles of different parental mediation strategies in overcoming the risk of online racial discrimination for Black and Latino adolescents' psychosocial distress.
METHODS: A total of 356 Black and Latino adolescents (Mage = 16.01 ± 1.60; 78.92% female) completed an online survey. Youth report

AIMS: This study examines elements of genetic discrimination among an at-risk, clinically undiagnosed Huntington's disease (HD) population.
METHODS: Sixty at-risk individuals, either positive or negative for the HD genetic mutation, completed a survey regarding their experiences of genetic discrimination, adverse and unfair treatment, and knowledge about existing laws and policies surrounding genetic discrimination.
RESULTS: Sixty eight percent of participants reported feeling "Great benefit" from knowing their genetic test results. Reported benefits of knowledge included planning for the fu

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that reports of interpersonal discrimination result in poor mental health. Because personality characteristics may either confound or mediate the link between these reports and mental health, there is a need to disentangle its role in order to better understand the nature of discrimination-mental health association. We examined whether hostility, anger repression and expression, pessimism, optimism, and self-esteem served as confounders in the association between perceived interpersonal discrimination and CESD-based depressive symptoms in a race/ethnic heterogeneo

Malaysian pervasive climate places its LGBTQ+ residents at heightened risk for suicidal behaviors (SB). This cross-sectional study aimed to elucidate connections between minority stressors (discrimination), types of social supports, and suicidality in this marginalized population. Utilizing online surveys, 317 LGBTQ+ Malaysians aged 18-49 provided data regarding experienced discrimination, perceived social support from family, friends, and significant others, suicidal ideation (SI), and SB. Quantitative analyses illuminated several key findings. First, discrimination is positively associated w

It is a critical time to advance solutions that would mitigate the perceived, potential, and actual risk of discrimination based on neurodegenerative biomarker information. Across neurodegenerative conditions, biomarkers are being evaluated to detect disease pathology before the onset of clinically measurable symptoms. Clinical adoption and research that expands the use of biomarkers raises novel legal questions and exposes potential gaps in existing privacy and antidiscrimination laws. These concerns may be particularly salient for individuals in the earliest disease stages who may still be e

BACKGROUND: African Americans with lung cancer experience disparities in overall survival (OS) outcomes. The association between patient-physician relationships on survival differences is not well understood. This study examined the association between patient-physician relationship and OS among African American non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) survivors from the Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors (ROCS) cohort.
METHODS: Patients with NSCLC completed baseline and yearly follow-up surveys. The baseline survey included the interpersonal process of care (IPC). Cox regression analysis was per

Mental and physical (MAP) training targets the brain and the body through a combination of focused-attention meditation and aerobic exercise. The following feasibility pilot study tested whether 6 weeks of MAP training improves mental health outcomes, while enhancing discrimination learning and heart rate variability (HRV) in a group of women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other stress-related conditions. Participants were assigned to training (n = 18) or no-training control (n = 8) groups depending on their ability and willingness to participate, and if their schedule allo

Systematic racism and structural discrimination in the United States are factors that have negatively affected the health of Black individuals and families. One form of racism that often goes unrecognized and yet has a profound negative impact on the health and safety of Black children is adultification. Adultification occurs when children are perceived, or treated, as being older than they are. We implemented the Racism as a Root Cause framework to identify ways health care providers and health care systems can work to dismantle inequities and address the adultification of Black children in t

BACKGROUND: The olfactory loss due to traumatic brain injury is a common clinical condition. The understanding of the cortical areas involved in ability to detect, discriminate and identify the odours is still limited. However, it has been shown that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is involved in the discrimination and recognition of odours and in particular the right OFC has a dominant role in the central processing of smell.
METHOD: This study used the Sniffin' Sticks Test to evaluate olfactory function of a 40-year-old female with persistent post-traumatic anosmia and to have a objective me

This study examines the association between healthcare experiences and LGBTQ + connectedness with beliefs about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among adolescent sexual minority males in romantic relationships. Results revealed that connection to the LGBTQ + community and comfort discussing sexual health with a healthcare provider was positively associated with perceived confidence in taking PrEP daily, while experiences of discrimination by a healthcare provider was negatively associated with the perceived PrEP effectiveness to prevent HIV. Findings highlight the importance of fostering an aff

INTRODUCTION: Rates for HIV are disproportionately higher for Black men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to other MSM in the U.S. While there is evidence that low perceived risk of HIV infection may increase HIV vulnerability, few studies have examined this relationship among Black MSM in the Southern U.S. where the HIV rates are the highest in the country. This study examined the association between perceived HIV risk and PrEP adoption among Black MSM in a medium-size city in Mississippi.
METHODS: Data were drawn from a subsample of the "ACCELERATE!" intervention, an innovative and susta

This study aimed to (1) identify latent classes of stigma and discrimination experiences among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV; (2) examine the associations between class membership and mental health outcomes, and (3) investigate the moderating effects of social support and resilience. The study used the baseline (N = 224) and six-month follow-up data (N = 118) from a longitudinal cohort study on HIV and hypertension among African American and Asian Pacific American MSM in Hawai'i and Philadelphia from 2019 to 2023. Latent class analysis was conducted to characterize the patter

Research on discrimination and risks for violence and mental health issues under the pandemic is notably absent. We examined the relative effects of perceived everyday discrimination (e.g., poorer service, disrespectful treatment in a typical week) and major experiences of race-based discrimination (e.g., racial/ethnic discrimination in housing or employment at any point in the lifetime) on experiences of violence and the PHQ-4 assessment of symptoms of depression and anxiety under the pandemic. We analyzed state-representative cross-sectional survey data from California adults (<I>N</I> = 211

BACKGROUND: Black/African American men experience a disproportionate burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and high exposure to discrimination, yet it is unclear whether social networks buffer discrimination’s effects on mental health. This study tested moderation by network characteristics among Black/African American men with T2D. METHODS: In a cross-sectional online survey (February-June 2024), 1,225 Black/African American men with T2D completed validated measures of everyday discrimination and healthcare discrimination, mental health, and egocentric network inventories elicited via multiple name

BACKGROUND: Chronic financial stress drives cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet its impact within Black Catholic communities remains understudied. Using a profile-based, socio-ecological framework, we centered chronic financial stress and low Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores, as correlates of downstream health risk, and we modeled racial discrimination as an upstream moderator that intensifies this trajectory.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 285 racially and religiously diverse adults were analyzed. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified distinct stress profiles, and structural equation

Race-related biases and discrimination and easily observable race-related characteristics, such as skin color, appear to go hand and hand, but it remains unclear how these factors work together to shape youth development. The current study addresses this gap by investigating skin color satisfaction as a mediator between perceptions of discrimination and adjustment. Data are from a cross-sectional sample of Latinx youth (N = 175; Mage = 12.86; 51.4% female; 86.9% US-born) who completed measures of foreigner-based objectification, peer discrimination, adult discrimination, self-esteem, depressiv
