Improved patient-physician relationships (PPR) are associated with better patient satisfaction and disease outcomes, however, there is limited literature assessing how PPR affects adherence in dermatology. We recruited 30 subjects with a clinical diagnosis of rosacea. Subjects were instructed to use ivermectin 1% cream once daily for 3 months and adherence was measured using the Medication Event Monitoring System cap. The Patient-Doctor Relationship Questionnaire (PDRQ-9), a validated questionnaire assessing patients’ perceived strength of the relationship with their doctor, was complete

A worldwide revision of the Cretaceous record of Neornithes (crown birds) revealed that unambiguous neornithine taxa are extremely scarce, with only a few showing diagnostic features to be confidently assigned to that group. Here we report two new neornithine specimens from Vega Island (López de Bertodano Formation). The first is a synsacrum (MN 7832-V) that shows a complex pattern of transversal diverticula intercepting the canalis synsacri, as in extant neornithines. Micro-CT scanning revealed a camerate pattern of trabeculae typical of neornithines. It further shows the oldest occurrence of

Neuropeptide AF (NPAF), a member of the RFamide family, is encoded by the same gene as neuropeptide FF (NPFF), which causes short-term anorexia. However, reports on the role of NPAF on appetite-related process are lacking. Thus, i.c.v. injections of 4.0, 8.0 and 16.0 nmol NPAF were administered to chicks to observe its effect on food and water intake. Chicks treated with 8.0 and 16.0 nmol i.c.v. NPAF decreased both their food and water intake. Additionally, all doses of NPAF injected caused a similar reduction in whole blood glucose concentration 180 min after injection. In a second experiment

Ulcerative lesions and mass mortalities of Atlantic estuarine fish, particularly menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), have been associated with exposure to Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates and their toxins. We collected fish from the Chicamacomico River, Maryland, and observed solitary ulcerative lesions on the majority of menhaden sampled. One striped bass (Morone saxatilis) had an area of reddening around the base of the dorsal fin. Bluegill (Lepomis machrochirus), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and carp (Cyprinus carpio) were externally nonremarkable. Hist

This paper presents a largely automated one-shot bird call classification pipeline, incorporating targeted manual quality control steps, designed for rare species absent from large publicly available classifiers like BirdNET and Perch. While these models excel at detecting common birds with abundant training data, they lack options for species with only 1-3 known recordings, a critical limitation for conservationists monitoring the last remaining individuals of endangered birds. To address this, we leverage the embedding space of large bird classification networks and develop a classifier usin

Postural control circuitry performs the essential function of maintaining balance and body position in response to perturbations that are either self-generated (e.g., reaching to pick up an object) or externally delivered (e.g., being pushed by another person). Human studies have shown that anticipation of predictable postural disturbances can modulate such responses. This indicates that postural control could involve higher-level neural structures associated with predictive functions, rather than being purely reactive. However, the underlying neural circuitry remains largely unknown. To enabl

Electrical signalling across distinct populations of brain cells underpins cognitive and emotional function. However, approaches that selectively regulate electrical signalling between two cellular components of a mammalian neural circuit remain sparse. Here we engineered an electrical synapse composed of two connexin proteins1 found in Morone americana (white perch fish)-connexin 34.7 and connexin 35-to accomplish mammalian circuit modulation. By exploiting protein mutagenesis, devising a new in vitro system for assaying connexin hemichannel docking, and performing computational modelling of

c-Myc is a transcription factor and master regulator of cellular metabolism, and plays a critical role in virus replication by regulating glutamine metabolism. In this study, the open-reading frame (ORF) of c-Myc, designated as Sc-c-Myc, was cloned and sequenced. Multiple alignment of the amino acid sequence showed that the conserved domain of Sc-c-Myc, including the helix-loop-helix-zipper (bHLHzip) domain and Myc N-terminal region, shared high identities with other homologues from different species. Sc-c-Myc mRNA was widely expressed in the examined tissues of mandarin fish, and the higher m

The large-sized tapeworm Dibothriocephalus latus is known as the broad or fish-borne cestode of mammals that is capable to infect humans and cause diphyllobothriosis. Recently, molecular data on D. latus has been accumulating in the literature and a complete genome sequence has been published; however, little is known about the karyotype and chromosome architecture. In this study, an in-depth karyological analysis of 2 D. latus specimens was carried out. The plerocercoids originated from a perch caught in subalpine Lake Iseo (Italy) and the tapeworms were reared in hamsters. Both specimens con

Zygaena larvae sequester the cyanogenic glucosides (CNglcs) linamarin and lotaustralin from their food plants (Fabaceae) and also de novo biosynthesize these compounds. In Zygaenidae, CNglcs serve as defence compounds during the entire life cycle, and their content and ratio are tightly regulated. We demonstrate that Z. filipendulae males transfer a nuptial gift of CNglcs to females during mating, and that females prefer males with a higher content of CNglcs for mating. Average HCN emission from female imagines is 19 times higher than from males, suggesting that plumes of HCN emitted from the

In recent years there has been a re-emergence of diphyllobothriasis by Diphyllobothrium latum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in Italy, France and Switzerland, where in the past this fish-borne zoonosis was widespread and then virtually disappeared. A change in eating habits such as the consumption of raw/undercooked freshwater fish, has led to an increased risk for consumers of ingesting infective larvae of D. latum. A survey on the factors responsible for the re-emergence of human diphyllobothriasis in Italy was carried out from March 2013 to December 2014. The aim of this study was to assess

Sediments contaminated by various sources of mercury (Hg) were studied at 8 sites in Sweden covering wide ranges of climate, salinity, and sediment types. At all sites, biota (plankton, sediment living organisms, and fish) showed enhanced concentrations of Hg relative to corresponding organisms at nearby reference sites. The key process determining the risk at these sites is the net transformation of inorganic Hg to the highly toxic and bioavailable methylmercury (MeHg). Accordingly, Hg concentrations in Perca fluviatilis were more strongly correlated to MeHg (p < 0.05) than to inorganic Hg co

The poultry-housing environment plays a significant role in the transmission and persistence of the egg-associated pathogen Salmonella Enteritidis in laying flocks. The commercial egg industry is in the midst of a transition toward cage-free housing, but the food safety ramifications of this shift are not yet certain. The present study assessed internal organ colonization by Salmonella Enteritidis in layer pullets reared in cage-free housing and infected at two different ages. Groups of 280 pullets were transferred from the rearing facility (at 9 wk of age in one trial and 15 wk in another) to

The development of the musculoskeletal system is influenced by bird activity, which can be impacted by light intensity (L). The objective of this study was to determine the effect of L on the growth and bone health of Lohmann Brown-Lite (LB) and Lohmann LSL-Lite (LW) pullets. Three L treatments (10, 30 or 50 lux, provided by white LED lights) were used in a Randomized Complete Block Design in 2 repeated trials. LB and LW (n = 1,800 per strain [S]) were randomly assigned to floor pens (50 pullets per pen; 12 pen replicates per L × S) within 6 light-tight rooms from 0 to 16 wk. Each pen containe

The prevalence of Salmonella Enteritidis in commercial egg-laying flocks is a prominent public health concern because contaminated eggs cause human illness. Deposition of this pathogen inside eggs results from bacterial colonization of reproductive tissues in infected hens. Environmental conditions can influence avian Salmonella infections, but the food safety consequences of different poultry housing systems remain uncertain. The present study assessed the invasion of internal organs by Salmonella Enteritidis in groups of experimentally infected laying hens of four commercial genetic lines (d

This study explored the muscle strain and activation patterns of several key flight muscles of the pigeon (Columba livia) during takeoff and landing flight. Using electromyography (EMG) to measure muscle activation, and sonomicrometry to quantify muscle strain, we evaluated the muscle function patterns of the pectoralis, biceps, humerotriceps and scapulotriceps as pigeons flew between two perches. These recordings were analyzed in the context of three-dimensional wing kinematics. To understand the different requirements of takeoff, midflight and landing, we compared the activity and strain of

Birds possess a unique balance organ, the lumbosacral organ (LSO), located in the lumbosacral region of the synsacrum. This organ surrounds the spinal cord and leaves distinct traces of its size and shape on the endocast of the vertebral canal. To date, many questions about the function of the LSO and its implications in bird biology remain. Here, we investigate whether the shape of the synsacral vertebral canal endocast, influenced by the LSO, is related to locomotor habits, pelvic morphology, and phylogeny. We used 2D and 3D geometric morphometrics to characterise the shape of the digital sy
