Common indications for cheek tooth extraction in the horse include dental fracture, periodontal disease, severe decay/ caries, mandibular fracture with alveolar/tooth involvement, and periapical abscess. Complications secondary to extraction of cheek teeth are prevalent. Typical complications may include retained root tip(s), collateral damage of neighboring teeth and alveolar bone, mandibular fracture non-union or delayed union, cemental ankylosis, dilacerated root(s), oroantral/oronasal fistula, palatal deviation of cheek teeth, bone sequestration, sinus involvement, alveolar plug failure, a

Eighty-two periodontal patients were treated in a split mouth design with coronal scaling (CS), root planing (RP), modified Widman surgery (MW), and flap with osseous resection surgery (FO) which were randomly assigned to various quadrants in the dentition. Therapy was performed in 3 phases: non-surgical, surgical, and supportive periodontal treatment (SPT) < or = 7 years. Clinical data consisted of probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession (REC), bleeding on probing (BOP), suppuration (SUP), and supragingival plaque (PL). Because of the necessity to exit many CS

Historically, wearing adornments on pierced body parts has been associated with many cultures as manifestations of religious or cultural identities. Currently, its use has a broad acceptance among young people. The most common sites for piercings are the tongue and lower lip in the oral cavity. Several complications may be associated with this practice with the most frequently observed being halitosis, periodontitis, tooth fracture, glossitis, and the formation of abscesses. This paper is a case report of a patient who had a complication from a piercing on the tongue located under the overlyin

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe unusual soft tissue complications of periodontal plastic surgery procedures at the recipient site after periodontal grafts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two independent reviewers performed a comprehensive search in MEDLINE, Cochrane, periodontics journals, reference lists, and grey literature for articles dated up to July 2021. Publications related to surgical interventions only around the teeth with an unusual complication at the recipient site were selected. No restrictions were made in the number of cases, follow-up period, or language. The Cochrane Collaborat

This article provides a comprehensive overview of dental disease in myomorphic rodents, particularly rats and hamsters, which are increasingly being presented to veterinary clinics due to their popularity as pets. The most common dental problems include malocclusion, periodontal disease, caries, and odontogenic abscesses. Diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical examination, stomatoscopy under anesthesia and imaging-techniques such as radiography and computed tomography, which are crucial for detecting pathologic lesions, planning treatment, and preventing complications. Treatment strategies

Counselling and drug prescription are the only means for the phycisian to manage dental emergencies. Among these, some are infection related: pulpitis, apical and periodontal abscesses, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and alveolitis. Urgent medical treatment includes antibiotics, mouth rinses and analgesics except for pulpitis (pain caused by thermal stimuli) for which analgesics alone are prescribed. Infection non related dental emergencies are: hemorrhage for which the best treatment is compression; trauma, mainly dental avulsion for which reimplantation must be done as soon as possi

OBJECTIVE: Propionibacterium propionicus and the recently described species Actinomyces radicidentis have been isolated from infections of endodontic origin; nevertheless, the possibility exists that their actual prevalence may have been underestimated by culture. The purpose of our study was to assess the occurrence of these 2 species in different types of endodontic infections by using the sensitive 16S rDNA-based nested polymerase chain reaction approach.
STUDY DESIGN: To detect these 2 species, nested polymerase chain reaction was performed directly in samples taken from primary endodonti

Enamel pearls are enamel anomalies on primary and permanent teeth roots that usually appear at furcation areas, especially in maxillary second and third molars. Enamel pearls usually occur singularly, but as many as four have been observed on the same tooth. This report describes an unusual case of multiple enamel pearls associated with periodontal pockets localized on all maxillary first and second molars. Because the patient had an advanced stage of periodontitis, the maxillary right first and left second molars were extracted. The remaining two maxillary molars were included in a strict fol

OBJECTIVE: Anaerobic deep abscesses are rare and may have unusual location leading to severe outcome due to delayed diagnosis and treatment. In order to improve their diagnosis, we report and analyse 5 new cases.
METHODS: Patients were seen from 1999 to 2003 in a single department of internal medicine of the university hospital of Marseille.
RESULTS: Five new cases were diagnosed consisting in 3 females and 2 males with a medium age of 56,8 years, with unusual location in 4 cases: epidural (2), psoas (1) and sub-diaphragmatic (1) or circumstances in one case of pulmonary abscess unrelated to

It is a general belief that large cyst-like periapical lesions and apical true cysts caused by root canal infection are less likely to heal after nonsurgical root canal therapy. Nevertheless, there is no direct evidence to support this assumption. A large cyst-like periapical lesion or an apical true cyst is formed within an area of apical periodontitis and cannot form by itself. Therefore, both large cyst-like periapical lesions and apical true cysts are of inflammatory and not of neoplastic origin. Apical periodontitis lesions, regardless of whether they are granulomas, abscesses, or cysts,

RATIONALE: Deep neck infections (DNIs) in the head and neck area are difficult to treat due to the anatomical complexity of the cervical region. Since inflammation causes changes in anatomy, it is often difficult to find the exact location of the abscess, which leads to failed surgical drainage.
PATIENT CONCERN: A 76-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic with trismus and right-side facial swelling. After extraction of her lower third molar 2 weeks ago, due to chronic periodontitis, her trismus had aggravated and her maximal mouth opening was 20 mm.
DIAGNOSES: Computed tomography

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome is a rare inherited disorder classically associated with palmoplantar keratoderma and early severe periodontitis, but its clinical presentation may be broader than expected. We report four molecularly confirmed cases from two unrelated families carrying two different homozygous CTSC variants. The first index patient presented with a large iliopsoas abscess as the initial manifestation of the disease, while her monozygotic twin was diagnosed through family screening and had only mild skin and dental findings. In the second family, a 13-year-old boy had recurrent soft-t

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection of the fascial planes, which is less common in head and neck, because of the rarity and higher vascularity in the region. We reviewed five patients with cervical necrotizing fasciitis of odontogenic infection managed at a teaching hospital at Chennai, India. There were four men and one woman, of whom four patients were diabetic and hypertensive, with a mean age of 53 years. Mandibular molars (periapical or pericoronal abscess) were found to be the source of infection in all of the cases. The treatment involved incision and drainage and debride

INTRODUCTION: Descending necrotising mediastinitis is a form of mediastinitis caused by odontogenic infection or deep cervical infections, which spreads to the mediastinum via the cervical fascial planes. Despite the increased use of CT scan as a diagnostic aid and the improvement in antibiotics, mortality in patients with descending necrotising mediastinitis remains high, reported between 25 and 40% in the literature. Surgical management and optimal form of mediastinal drainage remain controversial.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have treated three patients with descending necrotising mediastiniti

BACKGROUND: Secondary bacterial infections are increasingly recognized after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, bacterial abscess formation remains uncommon, and the simultaneous occurrence of brain and lung abscesses has not been previously reported. We report a rare case of Streptococcus intermedius infection presenting with multiple brain microabscesses and a lung abscess following COVID-19.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man with no significant medical history except cholelithiasis experienced persistent fever following a diagnosis of COVID-19 and subsequently developed impai

INTRODUCTION: Aggregatibacter aphrophilus (A. aphrophilus) is a rare cause of severe infections, including periodontitis, brain abscess, and endocarditis. While typically oral commensals, its involvement in extremity soft tissue abscesses is uncommon, posing diagnostic challenges and often mimicking tumors. This report describes a rare A. aphrophilus infection presenting as a large, spontaneously draining lower extremity abscess without trauma history.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 63-year-old male with untreated diabetes presented with posterior knee pain. Initial MRI suggested a biceps femoris te
