Machine Learning-based World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule for persons with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) is a well-known measure to assess disability in persons with Parkinson's disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the WHODAS 2.0 for persons with PD using a machine learning-based methodology (ML-WHODAS) and to examine the efficiency (i.e., number of items needed to be administered) and validity of the ML-WHODAS. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was performed. Data were randomly assigned to training datasets (80 %) and validation datasets (20 %). For developing the ML-WH

Validity and reliability of the 3-meter backward walk test in mildly disabled persons with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: One of the biggest problems for persons with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) is dizziness, poor posture, and balance problems that cause injury-causing falls. The aim of our study was to reveal the test-retest reliability and validity of the 3-Meter Backward Walk Test (3MBWT) in mildly disabled PwMS. METHODS: This study included a total of 93 mildly disabled PwMS with mean EDSS of 1.89. 3MBWT, Functional Access Test (FRT), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Timed 25-Foot Walk (T25FW), and Timed-Up and Go (TUG) were applied to the patients. To measure test-retest reliability, a second evaluation

[Current issues of rehabilitation of the disabled older persons with limb loss due to obliterative arterial disease.].

Utilization of prosthetic and orthotic care services among patients with limb stump due to obliterative diseases of peripheral arteries was analyzed based on population register of limb amputations. It was established that not more than 34% of patients apply for primary prosthesis after lower limb amputation. This rate decreases among patients older than 60 years, and significantly decreases among patients older than 70 years - down to 16,2%. In order to improve the mobility level and quality of life among this population of patients it is considered to design and implement interdepartmental r

Multimodal exercise training in multiple sclerosis: A randomized controlled trial in persons with substantial mobility disability.

BACKGROUND: Mobility disability is a common, debilitating feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). Exercise training has been identified as an approach to improve MS-related mobility disability. However, exercise randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on mobility in MS have generally not selectively targeted those with the onset of irreversible mobility disability. OBJECTIVES: The current multi-site RCT compared the efficacy of 6-months of supervised, multimodal exercise training with an active control condition for improving mobility, gait, physical fitness, and cognitive outcomes in persons with su

New potential determinants of disability in aged persons with myocardial infarction: results from the KORINNA-study.

BACKGROUND: Elderly individuals with coronary heart disease are a population particularly burdened by disability. However, to date many predictors of disability established in general populations have not been considered in studies examining disability in elderly acute myocardial infarction (AMI) survivors. Our study explores factors associated with the ability to perform basic activities of daily living in elderly patients with AMI. METHODS: Baseline data from 333 AMI-survivors older than 64 years included within the randomized controlled KORINNA-study were utilized to examine disability ass

The relationship of self-injurious behavior and aggression to social skills in persons with severe and profound learning disability.

In this study, we investigated differences in social skills among four groups of individuals with severe and profound learning disabilities. The comparison groups were composed of individuals engaging in self-injurious behavior, aggression, both behaviors, or neither of the behaviors. We measured social skills using the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills for Individuals with Severe Retardation, a standardized assessment of social skills in persons with severe or profound learning disability. The results indicated that individuals displaying maladaptive behaviors exhibited a restricted range of

Shifting participatory approach when ideology meets reality: a grounded theory study based on project leaders' experiences with peer-led sex education programs for and by persons with intellectual disabilities and/or autism.

BACKGROUND: This study explored peer-led sex education for individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or autism (ID/ASD) from the perspective of project leaders within Swedish non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The purpose of this Grounded Theory study was to develop a conceptual model that characterizes the ways in which peer-led sex education is implemented by Swedish NGOs. This was done by exploring what the concept of peer-led sex education means to NGO project leaders, and how they experience, explain and reason about the application of peer education in their daily operations. "All I know is that a disabled person is someone who is crippled": Using narratives of parents to unmask the misconceptions of mild intellectual disabilities concept as a learning support hindrance.

Parental involvement in providing learning support plays a crucial role in children's academic achievement. However, this support is often constrained when children are diagnosed with mild intellectual disabilities and require additional assistance. This study aimed to explore the experiences of parents in supporting children with such diagnoses. Adopting a phenomenological design within an interpretive paradigm and qualitative approach, data were collected from 23 purposefully selected parents of learners with mild intellectual disabilities attending three inclusive schools in disadvantaged a

Personalized health predictions challenge existing insurance frameworks: Time to revisit life and disability insurance regulation?

Personalized health predictions are developing rapidly across a wide range of diseases, challenging the existing legal frameworks for life and disability insurance. These frameworks were originally developed with a focus on presymptomatic genetic testing for severe monogenic diseases such as Huntington's disease. The rapid expansion of personalized medicine raises questions about whether existing legal frameworks remain adequate. This paper examines the underlying ethical values of current legal frameworks that rely on financial thresholds to balance stakeholders' interests and explores how th

Self-adaptive nanophotonic metasurfaces enabling digital twins: toward continuous personalized healthcare in aging and disability.

Continuous physiological monitoring is a prerequisite in medicine that enables early disease detection, long-term health monitoring, and individualized therapeutic interventions. Although wearable optical biosensors have evolved significantly, their long-term clinical deployment remains limited by mechanical degradation, signal drift, biofouling, energy constraints, and poor integration with intelligent healthcare infrastructure. These issues are especially acute in the aged and disabled, when constant, dependable, and tailored monitoring is critical for proactive disease treatment. As a resul
