Screening Mentally Retarded Children for Inborn Errors of Metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Most inborn errors of metabolism result in mental retardation and death due to accumulation of abnormal metabolites in the tissues. The presence of abnormal metabolites in the urine of mentally retarded individuals has been used worldwide for detection of inborn errors of metabolism. The purpose of the study is to determine the prevalence of inborn error of metabolism in mentally retarded children. METHODS: Random urine samples were collected from mentally retarded children at two institutes in Kathmandu, and also from 60 normal children from Duwakot, Nepal after obtaining consent

Surprisingly complex life: Sue Leung's story.

INTRODUCTION: While numerous studies relating to the lives of intellectually challenged people have been published previously, most have been from the caregiver's perspective and lack an insider's view. In addition, none of them were conducted in a Chinese context. Our purpose is to fill this gap by studying the life of Sue Leung, an intellectually disabled Chinese woman in Hong Kong. METHODS: Using a narrative approach that combined interviews and observational data collected over an extended time period, the research sought a holistic understanding of her life, how she interacts with others

Mentally handicapped institutionalized patients: a five-year review of gynecologic examinations performed under general anesthesia.

The validity of the practice of routine examination of mentally handicapped women under general anesthesia was evaluated via a retrospective chart review at Yale New Haven hospital for a five-year period. In the absence of a history of abnormal bleeding or discharge, this select population of low risk women had a zero incidence of gonorrhea and chlamydia, and no cervical dysplasia.

Increasing oral reading proficiency through overcorrection and phonic analysis.

The comparative efficacy of overcorrection, phonic analysis, and no-intervention control condition in an alternating treatments design on the number of oral reading errors made by 3 children with moderate mental retardation was evaluated. During overcorrection each oral reading error resulted in the teacher providing the correct word and the child pointing to and saying the word correctly five times before rereading the sentence in which the error word occurred. During phonic analysis, the teacher directed the child to attend to various phonetic elements of the error word and to "sound out" th

Using stimulus shaping and fading to establish stimulus control in normal and retarded children.

The present study was an effort to investigate whether, in addition to his IQ level, the child's ability to identify all relevant stimulus components would affect the frequency of overselective responding. Children of different IQ levels (i.e. normal, educably retarded, and trainable retarded children) participated. Subjects were trained to learn the meanings of four sets of fictitious words, i.e. two sets containing words printed in Roman letters (Roman words), and two sets containing words printed in Hebrew letters (Hebrew words). All subjects could identify the words of each set. The normal

About Whom Are We Talking When We Use Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities?

IMPORTANCE: Communicating clearly about who is included in a population group is a critical element to effective dissemination and knowledge transfer. This narrative review highlights the inconsistency as it relates to communicating about individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and developmental disability (DD). OBSERVATIONS: There is enormous variability in the use of definitions and abbreviations in the field of intellectual disability and developmental disabilities. The lack of consistency has resulted in widely varying reported rates of prevalence and has contributed to confusion ar

A comparison of the characteristics of self-stimulatory behaviors in "normal" children and children with developmental delays.

We examined the occurrence and characteristics of self-stimulatory behaviors in 10 nonhandicapped children and 5 children with developmental delays. Each child with a developmental delay was matched with two normal comparison children, one for chronological age and the other for mental age. The subjects were videotaped in four everyday settings. It was found that few differences existed between the children with developmental delays and their age-matched pairs in the percentage of time they engaged in self-stimulatory behavior, the variety of self-stimulatory behavior, how fast or slowly a beh

The effects of self-directed learning based on video prompting in improving 27 daily living skills for adolescents with mild intellectual disability in China.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Students with intellectual disability often face challenges in mastering daily living skills. Existing intervention strategies for these skills typically require support from instructors, which limits the autonomy and independence of these students. Consequently, this study aims to develop a self-directed learning approach based on video prompting to enhance the daily living skills of students with mild intellectual disability. METHOD: The research employed a multiple probe across behaviors design to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach among three adolescents with mil

Using independence training to teach independent living skills to children and young men with visual impairments.

Two groups of students with visual impairments were taught various independent living skills. Of the 7 students, 5 also had a diagnosis of mental retardation. One group (3 first graders) was taught the tasks of folding a shirt, making an emergency telephone call, and spreading soft foods with a knife. The other group (4 young men) was taught to increase leisure skills through three different leather-work tasks. Independence training was conducted in a group format and included social learning components (e.g., self-evaluation, peer evaluation and reinforcement) in addition to traditional opera

Direct and generalized effects of food satiation in reducing rumination.

The effects of food satiation on rumination and a collateral self-stimulatory behavior were examined in three profoundly retarded individuals. For all three individuals, the provision of unlimited quantities of cereal and milk during mealtime resulted in reductions in rumination. Decreases were also seen in collateral behaviors for all three subjects, although these responses were not specifically treated. Rumination and self-stimulation increased during a withdrawal condition for the three individuals, with experimental control being regained once the satiation procedure was re-instituted. Fa

Curriculum effectiveness for secondary-aged students with severe intellectual disabilities or profound and multiple learning difficulties in Australia: Teacher perspectives.

The active inclusion of students within education systems relies on a curriculum that caters to all. This article presents partial findings from Australian mixed methods research examining 46 teacher perspectives on the curriculum and its ability to support their practice in supporting students aged 12-19 years with severe intellectual disability or profound and multiple learning difficulties who attend specialist school settings. Results reveal that Australian teachers see the current curriculum as insufficient in its design and content and unable to cater to their students educational and so

Learning to Apply Algebra in the Community for Adults With Intellectual Developmental Disabilities.

Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are routinely excluded from algebra and other high-level mathematics courses. High school students with IDD take courses in arithmetic and life skills rather than having an opportunity to learn algebra. Yet algebra skills can support the learning of money and budgeting skills. This study explores the feasibility of algebra instruction for adults with IDD through an experimental curriculum. Ten individuals with IDD participated in a 6-week course framing mathematics concepts within the context of everyday challenges in handling mon

Sexual Crime Against Schoolchildren With Disabilities: A Nationwide Prospective Birth Cohort Study.

Numerous studies have shown that the rate of sexual victimization against children with disabilities is higher than the rate for children without disabilities. The study focuses on examining sexual crime against children with disabilities and explaining differences in victimization to elucidate to what extent types of disability, family disadvantages, gender, high-risk behavior, and location influence adolescents' risk of sexual victimization. Data are based on a national study of reported sexual crime against children in Denmark aged between 7 and 18 years using total birth cohorts (N = 679,6

The Reach and Limitation of the ADA and its Integration Mandate: Implications for the Successful Reentry of Individuals with Mental Disabilities in a Correctional Population.

This article argues that the ADA and its integration mandate, informed by international standards, should extend to incarcerated individuals with mental disabilities who reenter society, as they are at highly elevated risk for unnecessary segregation in institutions such as homeless shelters or hospitals or through reincarceration. An understanding of the precise services needed to prevent these strongly related but distinct variants of institutionalization requires a robust and continuing research agenda. In discussing the breadth of the ADA, we explore its history, interpretations of its app

Theorizing the Role of Sex Educators in the Resistance and Reification of Epistemic Injustices Related to the Sexual Expression of People with Intellectual Disability.

People with intellectual disability face a variety of epistemic injustices-systems of knowledge and educational inequality-related to their access to sex education and perceptions of their sexuality. Sex educators are in a position to address these injustices; however, they may not be fully aware of their own epistemic ethics. Furthermore, there is little theoretical understanding of how sex educators provide instruction within an environment that exhibits hostility toward the sexual expression of those with intellectual disability. This grounded theory study of interviews with 58 people who t

Caring for a child with severe intellectual disability in China: the example of Rett syndrome.

PURPOSE: Rett syndrome is one of several genetic disorders known to cause severe intellectual and physical disability, mostly in girls. Girls affected by Rett syndrome appear to develop normally in the first 6 months of life, after which the usual clinical presentation comprises regression of communication and hand skills, the appearance of hand stereotypies and impaired gait. Intellectual disability affects more than 1.5% of the population of children in developing countries yet we know little about the daily lives and support services available for them and their caregivers. METHOD: This qu

Two Case Reports of Neuropsychological Functioning in Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (CIPA).

Individuals with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) are reported to have intellectual disability but to our knowledge, no detailed study about neuropsychological functioning of this condition has ever been published. The present study assessed neuropsychological outcomes of two children with CIPA using standardized neuropsychological tests. The neuropsychological assessment revealed difficulties in a wide range of cognitive, executive, and integrative functions, such as a behavioral and adaptive level. Both children with CIPA functioned in the intellectual disability range
