Worry and rumination elicit similar neural representations: neuroimaging evidence for repetitive negative thinking.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) captures shared cognitive and emotional features of content-specific cognition, including future-focused worry and past-focused rumination. The degree to which these distinct but related processes recruit overlapping neural structures is undetermined, because most neuroscientific studies only examine worry or rumination in isolation. To address this, we developed a paradigm to elicit idiographic worries and ruminations during an fMRI scan in 39 young adults with a range of trait RNT scores. We measured concurrent emotion ratings and heart rate as a physiologi

The role of negative affect in the persistence of nicotine dependence among alternative high school students: A latent growth curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated how negative affect (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress) is often a correlate of and precursor to nicotine dependence. Although recent evidence shows a gradual decline in tobacco use in the United States, subgroups that report higher levels of negative affect may continue to be at risk of becoming dependent on nicotine. One high-risk subgroup is students who attend alternative high schools. The current longitudinal investigation examined the effect of negative affect on nicotine dependence in this youth population. METHODS: 1060 students from 29 a

The relationship between metacognitive beliefs and symptoms in eating disorders.

The present study aimed to explore the role of dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs in Eating Disorders (EDs) and their potential associations with core and comorbid symptoms. The Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Maudsley Obsessive- Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) were used to evaluate 44 Anorexia Nervosa (AN), 50 Bulimia Nervosa (BN) patients and 37 controls. Patients featured more dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs which positively correlated with ED and comorbid symptoms.

Adult Attachment Style and Suicidality.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence in the literature that adverse early attachment experiences and subsequent attachment insecurities during adulthood would lead to pessimism, low self-esteem, hopelessness and, ultimately, to suicide risk. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This paper aims to review finding on the link between attachment style and suicidality. We searched the literature using the database of the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)-MedLine/Pubmed system from January 1992 until December 2016. We started with 1992 because, as far as we know, there are no published studies ex

Stress generation and subsequent repetitive negative thinking link poor executive functioning and depression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Poor executive functioning (EF) has been consistently linked to depression, but questions remain regarding mechanisms driving this association. The current study tested whether poor EF is linked to depression symptoms six weeks later via dependent stressors (model 1) and stressors perceived to be uncontrollable (model 2) at week two (W2) and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) at W4 during early COVID-19 in college students. DESIGN: This was a longitudinal study with four timepoints spanning six weeks (April-June 2020). METHODS: Participants (N = 154) completed onlin

Repetitive negative thinking in daily life predicts psychopathology: Further validation of an ecological momentary assessment paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is an important transdiagnostic process involved in the development and maintenance of psychopathology. In a previous study, we developed an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) paradigm to assess RNT in daily life. This study aimed to replicate and extend earlier findings on the reliability and validity of the EMA paradigm, including the prediction of future mental health. In exploratory analyses, the predictive utility of dynamic patterns of RNT, such as stress-reactive RNT, variability, inertia, and instability of EMA-based RNT was investigate

Predicting Repetitive Negative Thinking in Daily Life: Insights From Brain-Based Graph-Theoretical Predictive Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the functional connectivity of large-scale brain networks, including the default mode network (DMN), salience network, frontoparietal network (FPN), and limbic network, have been implicated in repetitive negative thinking (RNT), a construct characterized by persistent and intrusive thoughts. However, the potential of these large-scale network abnormalities for predicting RNT in daily life remains underexplored. METHODS: We leveraged brain-based graph-theoretical predictive modeling (GPM) to predict daily-life RNT in 54 individuals. Functional magnetic resonance im

Increased insular functional connectivity during repetitive negative thinking in major depression and healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) in major depressive disorder (MDD) involves a persistent focus on negative self-related experiences. Resting-state fMRI shows that the functional connectivity (FC) between the anterior insula and the superior temporal sulcus is associated with RNT intensity. This study examines how insular FC patterns differ between resting state and RNT induction in MDD and healthy control (HC) participants. METHODS: Forty-one individuals with MDD and 28 HCs (total n = 69) underwent resting-state and RNT-induction fMRI scans. Seed-to-whole brain analysis using i

"I have problems and I have fun": Funniness ratings of memes about psychological problems reflect how people relate them to themselves and correlate with rumination, reflection, self-liking, and self-competence.

BACKGROUND: Some internet memes relate to specific psychological problems, such as pessimism, anxiety, procrastination, depression, masking feelings, social isolation, and coping with problems. We compared participants' funniness ratings and perceived self-relatedness of these memes, moderated by humor styles. Moreover, we investigated the relationships between ratings of the funniness and relatedness of memes and cognitive processes of rumination and reflection and participants' self-liking and self-competence, controlling for humor styles. The distinct internet addiction of otaku with maladaptive cognition and social support.

In Japan, people who indulge in animation, comics, and games are commonly referred to as "otaku." Despite the prevalent stereotype associating otaku with socially maladaptive characteristics, empirical studies on this topic are limited. Previous studies suggest two consistent aspects of otaku: a tendency towards pessimism and excessive internet use. Moreover, research suggests that addictive internet use is associated with pessimistic cognition. For this reason, this study examined the distinguishing characteristics of internet dependence among Japanese otaku. Assuming various content within "

The pathogenesis of depression: Roles of connexin 43-based gap junctions and inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading chronic mental illness worldwide, characterized by anhedonia and pessimism. Connexin is a kind of widely distributed protein in the body. Connexin 43 (Cx43) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of depression. Growing evidence has indicated that inflammation is closely associated with neuropsychiatric diseases such as depression. Inflammation occurs in patients with mood disorders, and symptomatic relief after multiple treatments is often accompanied by proinflammatory restoration. In this study, we sought to determine the upstream and downstream relat

'Despite the Pain, I Keep Moving Forward': A Qualitative Study on Brazilian Older Adults' Experiences With Chronic Low Back Pain.

OBJECTIVE: The burden of chronic low back pain (CLBP) is increasing rapidly along with the global population ageing. Such an increase will occur more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet, few studies have explored the experiences of older adults with CLBP, and these are primarily conducted in high-income countries. To address this concern, we explored the experiences of older Brazilian adults with CLBP. METHODS: We used a descriptive qualitative study and gathered data through interviews and drawings from participants representing their experiences. Data were analysed usin

Altered Reward Processing in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Insights From Active and Observational Learning.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been associated with altered performance monitoring, reflected in enhanced amplitudes of the error-related negativity in the event-related potential. However, this is not specific to OCD, as overactive error processing is also evident in anxiety. Although similar neural mechanisms have been proposed for error and feedback processing, it remains unclear whether the processing of errors as indexed by external feedback, reflected in the feedback-related negativity (FRN), is altered in OCD. Likewise, it is currently unknown whether performance monitoring in

Inflammation and Connexin 43 profiles in the prefrontal cortex are relevant to stress susceptibility and resilience in mice.

Depression is a major chronic mental illness worldwide, characterized by anhedonia and pessimism. Exposed to the same stressful stimuli, some people behave normally, while others exhibit negative behaviors and psychology. The exact molecular mechanisms linking stress-induced depressive susceptibility and resilience remain unclear. Connexin 43 (Cx43) forms gap junction channels between the astrocytes, acting as a crucial role in the pathogenesis of depression. Cx43 dysfunction could lead to depressive behaviors, and depression down-regulates the expression of Cx43 in the prefrontal cortex (PFC)

Relations of Subjective Social Status and Brooding with Blood Pressure.

BACKGROUND: Brooding, a type of rumination, and subjective social status (SSS) may be two interacting factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our goal was to examine the relations of brooding and SSS with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), two measures of CVD. We predicted that [1] brooding and SSS are each related to SBP and DBP and [2] the interaction of brooding and SSS is linked to SBP and DBP. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, college student participants (n = 240; 58.6% female, age: M = 23.95 years, SD = 8.62) completed demographics questionnaires,
