Contact-free trans-pars-planar illumination enables snapshot fundus camera for nonmydriatic wide field photography.

In conventional fundus photography, trans-pupillary illumination delivers illuminating light to the interior of the eye through the peripheral area of the pupil, and only the central part of the pupil can be used for collecting imaging light. Therefore, the field of view of conventional fundus cameras is limited, and pupil dilation is required for evaluating the retinal periphery which is frequently affected by diabetic retinopathy (DR), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and other chorioretinal conditions. We report here a nonmydriatic wide field fundus camera employing trans-pars-planar illum

First Case Report of the Use of Postmortem Wide-Angle Fundus Photography in Abusive Head Trauma.

Retinal hemorrhages commonly cooccur with abusive head trauma (AHT). While wide-field fundus photography is crucial for documenting retinal hemorrhage in living children, in fatal cases, a pathologic examination is traditionally used. This report describes the case of a 4-year-old girl who died of head trauma suspected to have been caused by physical abuse. Before the autopsy, wide-field fundus photography using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) was performed to document retinal hemorrhages. Imaging revealed that retinal hemorrhages were predominantly located at the posterior pole and in the

Development of a nomogram using fundus photography to predict glaucoma progression in patients showing disc hemorrhage.

To develop a nomogram to predict the progression of glaucoma by fundus photography in patients with disc hemorrhage. Retrospective review of the medical records of patients with disc hemorrhage, which was detected during follow up with open angle glaucoma, from January 2010 to March 2018. Patients were divided into glaucoma progression (n = 52) or non-progression (n = 38) groups. We assessed proximal location and morphology of disc hemorrhage; relationship to retinal nerve fiber layer defects with disc hemorrhage; and angular extent of disc hemorrhage, between groups using fundus photography.

Jaundice Eye Color Index (JECI): quantifying the yellowness of the sclera in jaundiced neonates with digital photography.

The sclera is arguably a better site than the skin to measure jaundice-especially in dark-skinned patients-since it is free of skin pigment (melanin), a major confounding factor. This work aims to show how the yellowness of the sclera can be quantified by digital photography in color spaces including the native RGB and CIE XYZ. We also introduce a new color metric we call "Jaundice Eye Color Index" (JECI) which allows the yellowness of jaundiced sclerae to be predicted for a specific total serum bilirubin level in the neonatal population.

Validity of energy intake estimated by digital photography plus recall in overweight and obese young adults.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have questioned the adequacy of self-report measures of dietary intake as the basis for scientific conclusions regarding the associations of dietary intake and health, and reports have recommended the development and evaluation of better methods for the assessment of dietary intake in free-living individuals. We developed a procedure that used pre- and post-meal digital photographs in combination with dietary recalls (DP+R) to assess energy intake during ad libitum eating in a cafeteria setting. OBJECTIVE: To compare mean daily energy intake of overweight and obese

Detection of melanomas in patients followed up with total cutaneous examinations, total cutaneous photography, and dermoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Many factors have been identified as important determinants that increase the risk of malignant melanoma (MM) developing. Patients with classic atypical mole syndrome (CAMS) have multiple such factors and are known to be at high risk for MMs developing. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the risk for newly diagnosed MMs developing in patients with CAMS and in a heterogeneous group of patients at high risk (ie, those with high-risk non-CAMS [HRNCAMS]) who had 1 or more risk factors: personal history of nonmelanoma skin cancers; family history of melanoma; biopsy specimen-confirmed dy

Time-lapse photography: a novel tool to study normal morphogenesis and the diseased hepatobiliary system in children.

The etiology of biliary atresia (BA) and many other childhood cholangiopathies remains unknown. To investigate the normal and diseased hepatobiliary system in vitro, we isolated and cultured biliary epithelial cells (BEC) from a number of species including man. Time-lapse video microscopy was used to study cell movements in vitro, and demonstrated the characteristic morphologic appearance of the BEC and their interactions with hepatocytes and other cell types on artificial biosynthetic materials. The cells remain attached and viable in routine culture conditions; however, when placed onto or w

A clinical study on the detection of strabismus, anisometropia or ametropia of children by simultaneous photography of the corneal and the fundus reflexes.

Twenty two strabismus and 106 straight eyed patients with anatomically normal eyes were first photographed with a conventional camera equipped with a weak 100 mm teleobjective and coaxial flashlight and then examined clinically. The possibility of detecting strabismus, anisometropias and ametropias in the photographs by noting the localisation of the corneal reflexes and examining the appearance and lightness of the fundus reflexes and their possible asymmetry were tested in a double blind study. Even small angled strabismus cases could be found because of the asymmetrical localisation of the
