Primary chondrosarcoma of breast--cytology with histopathological correlation: a rare case report with review of literature.

Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the breast other than angiosarcoma are extremely rare and comprise <0.5% of breast tumors. Primary chondrosarcoma of the breast is an extremely rare entity and only 10 cases are reported as single case reports in literature until date. A diagnosis of primary mammary sarcoma can be established only after excluding metaplastic carcinomas and malignant phyllodes by extensive sampling for evidence of in situ or invasive carcinoma. Here, we report a primary chondrosarcoma of breast in a 55-year-old lady diagnosed precisely on fine-needle aspiration cytology and confi

[Pathology of benign tumorous diseases of the mammary glands (author's transl)].

Among the large number of mammary biopsies undertaken today, benign diseases and marginally normal types occupy a considerable place. Of these, those which are considered prestages of malignant tumors, simulate malignant tumors and cause difficulties in differential diagnosis (intraoperative section) are of great importance. In childhood, infantile hypertrophies must be thought of macromastia in precocious puberty, puberal macromastia in puberty; in women, of forms of chronic mastitis in the presence of retention of secretion and periductal inflammation. The best known is the fibroadenoma in t

From the archives of the AFIP: breast masses in children and adolescents: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

The spectrum of breast lesions in children and adolescents varies markedly from that for adults, with the former lesions being overwhelmingly benign. A breast mass in a young boy or girl may arise from normal and abnormal breast development. Other causes of masses include infection, trauma, and cyst formation. After onset of puberty, most cases of breast enlargement arise from benign fibroadenoma in girls and gynecomastia in boys. These conditions have specific imaging appearances, although juvenile (often giant) fibroadenoma cannot be distinguished from phyllodes tumor, which can be benign or

Spindle cell lesions of the breast: a diagnostic approach.

Spindle cell lesions of the breast comprise a heterogeneous group of lesions, ranging from reactive and benign processes to aggressive malignant tumours. Despite their rarity, they attract the attention of breast pathologists due to their overlapping morphological features and diagnostic challenges, particularly on core needle biopsy (CNB) specimens. Pathologists should recognise the wide range of differential diagnoses and be familiar with the diverse morphological appearances of these lesions to make an accurate diagnosis and to suggest proper management of the patients. Phyllodes tumour of the labia minora.

A 33-year-old woman presented for a preoperative examination prior to an upcoming operative hysteroscopy. During the examination, a firm 1 cm mass in her right labia minora was noted. The mass was excised in the operating room without difficulty. Pathological examination revealed a benign phyllodes tumour of the vulva. Phyllodes tumours are uncommon fibroepithelial tumours primarily found in the breast although rarely may present as a vulvar lesion. Phyllodes tumours of the vulva are rarely reported in the literature, with only 17 previously reported cases. This case represents the first repor

Breast carcinoma and phyllodes tumour: a case series.

Malignant transformation of the epithelial component of phyllodes tumours (PT) is rare and only reported in literature as sporadic cases of carcinoma associated with PTs. We report the clinicopathological characteristics of in situ and invasive carcinoma coexisting with PT in 10 patients treated in our institution over an 11-year period from 1992 to 2012. Ten patients with coexisting PT and in situ or invasive carcinoma were identified from our records. Six had carcinoma found within the PT. All were female with a median age of 47 (43-72) years. One patient had a history of PT in the same brea

Giant breast tumours of adolescence.

The giant breast tumour of adolescence is rare in Caucasians. Six cases seen over 10 years are reported to illustrate diagnostic problems and highlight the importance of conservative management. Malignancy may be suspected because of rapid growth and skin ulceration. Conversely, the lesion may be considered to be no more than asymmetrical breast development or virginal hypertrophy. Clinical management problems have arisen because of confusion between fibroadenoma and the term cystosarcoma phylloides, previously used for tumours seen in older patients. The histological distinction between giant

Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia in lesions involving anogenital mammary-like glands.

Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH), first reported in 1986, is nowadays a well-recognized change in the breast. We present three cases of lesions involving anogenital mammary-like glands demonstrating this feature. All patients were females (ages, 42, 43, and 53 years). Each presented with a solitary, 1.5- to 2-cm asymptomatic nodule. Locations included the perianal area, perineum, and labium majus. Histopathologically, one lesion was classified as low-grade phyllodes tumor, another as fibroadenoma, and in the remaining case PASH was found in the background of mild hyperplasia of ano

Male Mammary Myofibroblastoma Masquerading as Malignancy.

We report a case of myofibroblastoma (MFB) of the breast in a 58-year-old man who presented with a large painless lump in the left breast. Radiologic breast imaging showed a well-circumscribed mass with no microcalcifications. Microscopic examination revealed fascicles of spindle cell neoplasm with intervening thick bundles of hyalinized collagen and interspersed vessels. Pertinent immunohistochemistry markers showed positivity for CD34, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and androgen receptor. A diagnosis of MFB of the breast was rendered. It is crucial to differentiate MFB from other e

Molecular pathology of phyllodes tumours of the breast-much more than MED12.

Phyllodes tumours of the breast present challenges in their diagnosis, classification and management. Further understanding of the molecular changes underpinning these tumours may lead to more precise classification and potential treatment options. Similar to fibroadenomas, MED12 is the most frequently mutated gene in phyllodes tumour. However, in addition, there is a spectrum of molecular alterations from benign to malignant phyllodes tumours with increasing genomic complexity, high level copy number alterations and aberrations of cancer driver genes in malignant phyllodes tumours. This revie

An approach to the diagnosis of spindle cell lesions of the breast.

Although most breast spindle cell lesions (BSCLs) are rare, they constitute a wide spectrum of diseases, ranging from reactive processes to aggressive malignant tumours. Despite their varied histogenesis and behaviour, some lesions show an overlap of morphological features, making accurate diagnosis a challenging task, particularly in needle core biopsies. Clinical history and immunohistochemistry can help in making a correct diagnosis in morphologically challenging cases. To make an accurate diagnosis, it is important to maintain a wide differential diagnosis and be familiar with the diverse

Epithelial--stromal interactions in tumors. A morphologic study of fibroepithelial tumors of the breast.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The known spatial interaction between normal breast epithelium and its surrounding stroma prompted an investigation of the spatial relationship between stromal mitoses and the epithelial component of fibroepithelial tumors of the breast. The authors applied a novel computerized morphometric technique to routinely processed histologic sections of 23 fibroepithelial tumors (13 fibroadenomas and 10 phyllodes tumors). The proportional area of epithelium in successive concentric annuli surrounding stromal mitoses was measured, and its distribution was compared with that arou

Clinicopathologic Features and Genetic Alterations of a Primary Osteosarcoma of the Uterine Corpus.

Primary osteosarcoma (OS) of the uterus is distinctly rare. We report a case of primary uterine OS with pulmonary metastasis in a 74-yr-old woman. Histopathologic features of the uterine tumor were in keeping with a pure chondroblastic OS composed of neoplastic cells with osteoblastic/chondroblastic differentiation and neoplastic bone formation. Despite treatment with Doxorubicin and Olaratumab and later with palliative radiation therapy, the patient died 7 mo after hysterectomy due to multiple distant metastases. A targeted next-generation sequencing assay based on a 637-gene panel was perfor
