The mini-incision technique for carpal tunnel release using nasal instruments in Chinese patients.

Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) remains a challenge for hand surgeons. Carpal tunnel release (CTR) using nasal instruments has the advantages of both endoscopy and open surgery. In this study we aimed to explore the effectiveness of CTR using nasal instruments in Chinese patients. We present a case series of 49 cases of idiopathic CTS treated with the mini-incision technique using nasal instruments. The average recovery days before return to normal work and complications were recorded. The mean grip strength, pinch strength, and sensation were evaluated. Subjective results were evalua

Difficulty of pinching behind the back: an atypical symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome related to a specific wrist position. Two case reports.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may be overlooked in the absence of typical sensory symptoms. Two patients with CTS lacked the attendant sensory symptoms but experienced difficulties performing a pinching action behind the back (manipulation of the buckle of a baby sling or the hook of a brassiere), a mode of pinching that required wrist flexion. The causative mechanism was probably exacerbation of a latent weakness of the intrinsic muscles of the thumb by wrist flexion, in which the strength of the extrinsic flexors of the thumb and index finger were decreased due to loosening of the tendons. Surgical treatment of tardy ulnar nerve palsy due to non-neurogenic heterotopic ossification in the elbow.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is characterized by the formation of pathological bone within the soft tissues. HO predominantly affects elbow joints and may be accompanied by tardy ulnar nerve palsy. This study aimed to explore the clinical and functional outcomes of patients with tardy ulnar nerve palsy caused by HO following surgical treatment, with a review of the relevant literature. A retrospective study was conducted on 4 patients with tardy ulnar nerve palsy caused by HO, who underwent anterior subcutaneous ulnar nerve transposition between 2015 and 2020. The patients were followed up fo

Biomechanical and aesthetic outcomes following radial forearm free flap transfer: comparison of ipsilateral full-thickness skin graft and traditional split-thickness skin graft.

The radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is associated with donor site morbidity. This study aimed to quantify the functional and aesthetic outcomes after closure of the RFFF donor site using triangular full-thickness skin grafts (FTSGs) harvested adjacent to the flap or traditional split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs). The study included patients who underwent oral cavity reconstruction with an RFFF between March 2017 and August 2021. The patients were divided into two groups based on the donor site closure method: FTSG or STSG. The primary outcomes were biomechanical grip strength, pinch strength,

Effect of custom-made and prefabricated orthoses on grip strength in persons with carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Based on the literature, patients with carpal tunnel syndrome are suggested to wear a custom-made wrist orthosis immobilizing the wrist in a neutral position. Many prefabricated orthoses are available on the market, but the majority of those do not assure neutral wrist position. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the use of orthosis affects grip strength in persons with carpal tunnel syndrome in a way that supports preference for custom-made orthoses with neutral wrist position over prefabricated orthoses. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental. METHODS: Comparisons of grip strength for three

Relationships between motor-unit number estimates and isometric strength in distal muscles in ALS/MND.

Measurement of progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease (ALS/MND) is useful for charting the natural history and assessing efficacy in drug trials. Common measures are maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) which mainly focuses on-proximal muscles, and electrophysiologic measures of the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and motor-unit number estimation (MUNE) which focus on distal muscles. We have undertaken a study to compare the relationships between MVIC, CMAP and MUNE recorded in intrinsic hand muscles of 10 subjects with ALS/MND. Grip and pinch (betw
