Gender identification in younger and older adults: use of spectral and temporal cues in noise-vocoded speech.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate potential effects of age on the ability of normal-hearing (NH) adult listeners to utilize spectral and temporal cues when performing a voice gender identification task. DESIGN: Ten younger and 10 older NH adult listeners were measured on their ability to correctly identify the speaker gender of six different vowel tokens (H-/vowel/-D) when spoken by eight speakers (four male and four female). Spectral (number of channels) and temporal cues (low-pass cut-off frequency for temporal envelope extraction) were systematically manipulated using noi

The left inferior frontal gyrus is causally linked to vocal feedback control: evidence from high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Current models of speech motor control propose a role for the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in feedforward control of speech production. There is evidence, however, that has implicated the functional relevance of the left IFG for the neuromotor processing of vocal feedback errors. The present event-related potential (ERP) study examined whether the left IFG is causally linked to auditory feedback control of vocal production with high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS). After receiving active or sham HD-tACS over the left IFG at 6 or 70 Hz, 20 healthy adults v

Tonal structures benefit short-term memory for real music: Evidence from non-musicians and individuals with congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of music processing, which includes impaired pitch memory, associated to abnormalities in the right fronto-temporal network. Previous research has shown that tonal structures (as defined by the Western musical system) improve short-term memory performance for short tone sequences (in comparison to atonal versions) in non-musician listeners, but the tonal structures only benefited response times in amusic individuals. We here tested the potential benefit of tonal structures for short-term memory with more complex musical material. Congenital am

Cochlear compound action potentials from high-level tone bursts originate from wide cochlear regions that are offset toward the most sensitive cochlear region.

Little is known about the spatial origins of auditory nerve (AN) compound action potentials (CAPs) evoked by moderate to intense sounds. We studied the spatial origins of AN CAPs evoked by 2- to 16-kHz tone bursts at several sound levels by slowly injecting kainic acid solution into the cochlear apex of anesthetized guinea pigs. As the solution flowed from apex to base, it sequentially reduced CAP responses from low- to high-frequency cochlear regions. The times at which CAPs were reduced, combined with the cochlear location traversed by the solution at that time, showed the cochlear origin of

Comparison of the acoustic properties of six popular stethoscopes.

This study evaluated stethoscope acoustics by using a sound frequency generator and an active artificial ear. Six popular, currently available stethoscopes were compared in their various modes involving bells, diaphragms, etc.: Littmann Classic II, Littmann Cardiology II, Littmann Master Cardiology, Hewlett-Packard Rappaport-Sprague, Tycos Harvey Triple Head, and Allen Medical Series 5A RPS Binaural. The transfer function was measured from 37.5-1000 Hz, the range where nearly all heart and lung sounds are found. Sound in the low-frequency range (37.5-112.5 Hz) was in most cases amplified by th

Vocal shadowing in singers and nonsingers.

Five nonsingers and five singers vocally matched the pitches of frequency modulated tones. Subject responses to the shadowing task were analyzed in terms of accuracy, and in terms of duration and speed characteristics of pitch changes. In addition, each frequency change was categorized according to hit, overshoot, undershoot, or oscillate patterns. Singers were found to effect pitch changes in significantly less time than the nonsingers. This finding was attributed to more direct patterns (hits) and faster maximum speeds obtained by the singers. Both groups demonstrated a direct relationship b

[Significance of the glycerol test for the diagnosis of sensorineural hearing disorders].

140 patients with various forms of sensorineural hearing loss were examined via the glycerol test (Klockhoff). In 66% of the cases with Menière's disease, a typical temporary threshold shift could be seen. 17 patients with fluctuating hearing loss of unknown etiology without vestibular symptoms showed a similar effect; they were classified as belonging to the group of the cochlear type of Menière's disease. In 34% of cases with clinically assured diagnosis of Ménière's disease, glycerol did not induce improvement in hearing. Repeated glycerol tests revealed varying results; shortly after a Men

Steady-state responses to concurrent melodies: source distribution, top-down, and bottom-up attention.

Humans can direct attentional resources to a single sound occurring simultaneously among others to extract the most behaviourally relevant information present. To investigate this cognitive phenomenon in a precise manner, we used frequency-tagging to separate neural auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) that can be traced back to each auditory stimulus, from the neural mix elicited by multiple simultaneous sounds. Using a mixture of 2 frequency-tagged melody streams, we instructed participants to selectively attend to one stream or the other while following the development of the pitch conto

Representations of Invariant Musical Categories Are Decodable by Pattern Analysis of Locally Distributed BOLD Responses in Superior Temporal and Intraparietal Sulci.

In categorical perception (CP), continuous physical signals are mapped to discrete perceptual bins: mental categories not found in the physical world. CP has been demonstrated across multiple sensory modalities and, in audition, for certain over-learned speech and musical sounds. The neural basis of auditory CP, however, remains ambiguous, including its robustness in nonspeech processes and the relative roles of left/right hemispheres; primary/nonprimary cortices; and ventral/dorsal perceptual processing streams. Here, highly trained musicians listened to 2-tone musical intervals, which they p

Dyslexia and music. From timing deficits to musical intervention.

The underlying causes of the language and literacy difficulties experienced by dyslexic children are not yet fully understood, but current theories suggest that timing deficits may be a key factor. Dyslexic children have been found to exhibit timing difficulties in the domains of language, music, perception and cognition, as well as motor control. The author has previously suggested that group music lessons, based on singing and rhythm games, might provide a valuable multisensory support tool for dyslexic children by encouraging the development of important auditory and motor timing skills and

Sensorimotor Adaptation of Vocal Pitch Is Impaired in Cerebellar Ataxia.

Sensory errors, mismatches between predicted sensory outcomes of movement and reafferent sensory feedback, drive changes in the feedforward control of future motor behavior that correct for those errors. Across a wide variety of motor behaviors, individuals with cerebellar damage show impairments in these corrections, strongly suggesting a key role of the cerebellum in sensorimotor adaptation. However, the extent to which the cerebellum is involved in controlling vocal pitch is currently unknown. Crucially, vocal pitch differs in several ways from other systems that suggest it relies more on f

Infrasonic hearing in birds: a review of audiometry and hypothesized structure-function relationships.

The perception of airborne infrasound (sounds below 20 Hz, inaudible to humans except at very high levels) has been documented in a handful of mammals and birds. While animals that produce vocalizations with infrasonic components (e.g. elephants) present conspicuous examples of potential use of infrasound in the context of communication, the extent to which airborne infrasound perception exists among terrestrial animals is unclear. Given that most infrasound in the environment arises from geophysical sources, many of which could be ecologically relevant, communication might not be the only use

Neural correlates of abnormal auditory feedback processing during speech production in Alzheimer's disease.

Accurate integration of sensory inputs and motor commands is essential to achieve successful behavioral goals. A robust model of sensorimotor integration is the pitch perturbation response, in which speakers respond rapidly to shifts of the pitch in their auditory feedback. In a previous study, we demonstrated abnormal sensorimotor integration in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) with an abnormally enhanced behavioral response to pitch perturbation. Here we examine the neural correlates of the abnormal pitch perturbation response in AD patients, using magnetoencephalographic imaging. The

Hemispheric differences between left and right supramarginal gyrus for pitch and rhythm memory.

Functional brain imaging studies and non-invasive brain stimulation methods have shown the importance of the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) for pitch memory. The extent to which this brain region plays a crucial role in memory for other auditory material remains unclear. Here, we sought to investigate the role of the left and right SMG in pitch and rhythm memory in non-musicians. Anodal or sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was applied over the left SMG (Experiment 1) and right SMG (Experiment 2) in two different sessions. In each session participants completed a pitch and rhy

Self-Administered Tinnitus Pitch Matching versus a Conventional Audiometric Procedure.

OBJECTIVE: Obtaining an accurate tinnitus pitch match is an initial and critical requirement for tinnitus evaluation and treatment, particularly for applying tailor-made notched music training. We investigated whether computer-based self-administered tinnitus pitch matching (CSTPM) is comparable with a conventional audiometric procedure (CAP). METHODS: In total, 82 patients (mean age 45.52 years; 42 females) with tonal tinnitus participated. The CAP was performed by the same audiologist using a 2-alternative forced choice method with a frequency range of 0.25-16 kHz. In the CSTPM, the subject

Patterns of deficit in auditory temporal processing among dyslexic adults.

We characterized temporal psychoacoustic performance in a group of adult dyslexics with excellent cognitive abilities. These individuals performed adequately on a two-tone frequency discrimination task when inter-stimulus intervals were long ( > or =1 s or more). However, their performance gradually deteriorated as interval duration was shortened (0.7- 0.1 s). Dyslexics with similar reading abilities, but with average cognitive abilities, performed poorly at all intervals. These findings show that, though both groups suffer from non-phonological deficits in auditory discrimination, the nature

Measures of vocal function during changes in vocal effort level.

The purpose of this article is to present the results of a controlled study of the day-to-day variabilities of three acoustic parameters (jitter, shimmer, and normalized noise energy), and two electroglottographic parameters (contact quotient and contact quotient perturbation) for vowels produced at three vocal efforts (low, normal, high). Data were obtained with use of a sophisticated bilinear interpolation pitch detection method. A repeated measures design required subjects to produce the vowels /ae/ and /a/ five times a day over 3 days at each vocal effort level. The jitter, shimmer, and no

Vestibular mapping of the naturalistic head-centered motion spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Naturalistic head accelerations can be used to elicit vestibular evoked potentials (VestEPs). These potentials allow for analysis of cortical vestibular processing and its multi-sensory integration with a high temporal resolution. METHODS: We report the results of two experiments in which we compared the differential VestEPs elicited by randomized translations, rotations, and tilts in healthy subjects on a motion platform. RESULTS: An event-related potential (ERP) analysis revealed that established VestEPs were verifiable in all three acceleration domains (translations, rotations

Amplitude modulated S-tones can be superior to noise for tinnitus reduction.

PURPOSE: Recent evidence has suggested that amplitude modulated tones might have some advantages over broadband noise. METHOD: Fifty-six subjects listened to S-Tones at a carrier frequency matched at the tinnitus pitch (amplitude modulation rate of 40 Hz) and to broadband noise. Subjects rated their tinnitus loudness before, during, and after a 120-s duration masker. RESULTS: The results suggested that S-Tones were generally more effective at reducing tinnitus loudness than noise. In about one third (21/56) of the subjects, there was no significant effect from any masker. In other subjects,
