A 37-year-old right-handed female sustained a minor electric shock to her right hand while changing a bulb in a Kodak Reliant Intelligent Microfilmer 2000. She noted a progressive onset of parasthesias of her right hand that became associated with throbbing pain at rest, as well as swelling and profound weakness of her hand during the next two months. Plethysmography demonstrated arterial vasoconstriction of her right hand. Her reflex sympathetic dystrophy was successfully treated with cervicothoracic sympathetic blocks.

Eighty severe cases of chronic laryngeal stenosis in patients aged 1--78 years, where all other treatment had failed, were operated upon with laryngofissure of the front and back wall of the larynx followed by excision of the stenosis scar tissue. An endolaryngeal prosthesis was inserted and left in position for four months. The clinical result was good in 69 patients but, for various reasons, unsuccessful in eleven. The results of the treatment was also investigated by spirometry and body plethysmography. Contraindications for this operation are presented. The mean follow-up time was 6.9 year

Volume-pulse digital plethysmography performed under ideal conditions on relatively fit adults has shown that lorazepam 4 mg intravenously abolishes the vasoconstriction of fear and restores the digital vasodilatation of the tranquil mind. The sedative effect of the drug is prolonged and is associated with several hours of anterograde amnesia from the time of its administration. The 48,XXYY syndrome is a form of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, characterized by tall statures, aggressive behavior, mental retardation, and stasis changes reflecting vascular insufficiency. We report a 25-year-old male with this syndrome showing a peripheral neuropathy and stasis dermatitis which were both reversed by administration of testosterone. In 169 consecutive women undergoing cesarean section, of which 90 were performed as an emergency and 79 electively, the frequency of deep vein thrombosis was evaluated with a non-invasive diagnostic technique - strain gauge plethysmography. Three patients developed thrombosis (1.8 per cent), all after acute surgery. No specific background factors were associated with the development of thrombosis. In 26 of the 79 patients (33 per cent), who were plethysmographed before operation, a biphasic venous emptying indicated venous outflow obstruction by the pregnant uterus.

The safety and efficacy of caval interruption has been well demonstrated. Likewise, comparisons of caval interruption and anticoagulation have shown similar rates of mean and long term clinical outcome. One concern that continues to be voiced is whether or not anticoagulation enhances venous recovery and function. The present study compares outcome by impedance plethysmography, Duplex scanning and clinical sequelae at six months after the acute illness and treatment with either caval interruption or anticoagulation. The results show no significant differences between the two treatment groups.

In view of the high prevalence of sleep apnoea (SA) a stepped concept for diagnosis and therapy is needed. Such a concept requires appropriate instrumentation. The apparative requirement for a five-stage concept, and the experience gained with it, are presented, in particular these newly introduced stages: screening instrument, based on an analysis of heart rate and breathing sounds, and a mobile sleep laboratory based on oxygen saturation measurement combined with inductive plethysmography and four further parameters.
