Association of Loading Asymmetry During Squatting With Loading Asymmetry During Drop Jump After ACL Reconstruction: Implications for Rehabilitation Progression.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical asymmetries after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) may be amplified and perpetuated by progressing athletes to higher-demand tasks despite impairments in lower-demand tasks. HYPOTHESES: (1) Between-limb asymmetries in limb loading and joint kinetics will be greater during the higher-demand drop jump compared with squatting. (2) Asymmetries in limb loading and joint kinetics during squatting will be associated with asymmetries during drop jump. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: A total of 22 (11 female)

Effects of Prophylactic Knee Bracing on Lower Limb Kinematics, Kinetics, and Energetics During Double-Leg Drop Landing at 2 Heights.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries commonly occur during landing maneuvers. Prophylactic knee braces were introduced to reduce the risk of ACL injuries, but their effectiveness is debated. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that bracing would improve biomechanical factors previously related to the risk of ACL injuries, such as increased hip and knee flexion angles at initial contact and at peak vertical ground-reaction force (GRF), increased ankle plantar flexion angles at initial contact, decreased peak GRFs, and decreased peak knee extension moment. We also hypothesized that bra

Antioxidant-rich beetroot juice does not adversely affect acute neuromuscular adaptation following eccentric exercise.

This study examined the effects of beetroot juice on the repeated bout effect (RBE) to eccentric exercise. Twenty-nine recreationally active males performed two bouts of 100-drop jumps, separated by 14-21 days. Using a double-blind, independent groups design, participants consumed either a higher dose beetroot juice (H-BT; 250 ml, n = 10), a lower dose beetroot juice (L-BT; 125 ml, n = 9) or an isocaloric placebo (PLA; 250 ml, n = 10) for 3 days after bout 1; no drinks were consumed after bout 2. Maximal isometric voluntary contraction (MIVC), countermovement jump (CMJ), pressure-pain threshol

Decreased proprioception is associated with inferior postural control during unplanned landing in individuals with chronic ankle instability.

Poor postural control during jump landing may increase ankle sprain incidences among people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). The effects of anticipation on it and its relationship with proprioception need further examination. Fifteen participants with CAI and 15 healthy controls were recruited to perform single-leg jump landings when knowing the landing side before (planned) or after (unplanned) take-off respectively, along with a step-down proprioception test differentiating four inclination platforms (inverted 12°, 14°, 16° and 18°). Ground reaction force data (peak force, loading rate

Influence of Foot-Landing Positions at Initial Contact on Knee Flexion Angles for Single-Leg Drop Landings.

Purpose: Small knee flexion angles are associated with increased non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risks. The purpose of this study was to provide insights into how ankle plantar flexion angles influenced knee flexion angles at initial contact during single-leg drop landings. Method: Thirteen male recreational basketball players performed single-leg drop landings from a 30-cm high platform using three randomized foot-landing positions (natural, fore-foot, and flat-foot). A motion capture system and a force plate were used to measure lower extremity kinematics and vertical gro

Visual-Motor Control of Drop Landing After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

CONTEXT: Visual feedback is crucial in the control of human movement. When vision is obstructed, alterations in landing neuromuscular control may increase movements that place individuals at risk for injury. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury may further alter the motor-control response to alterations in visual feedback. The development of stroboscopic glasses that disrupt visual feedback without fully obscuring it has enabled researchers to assess visual-motor control during movements that simulate the dynamic demands of athletic activity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of strobos

Virtual Neuromuscular Training Among Physically Active Young Adults: A Feasibility Study.

CONTEXT: Evidence indicates a 2 to 3 times increased risk of musculoskeletal injury after return to play from concussion. Undetected neuromuscular control deficits at return to play may relate to increased musculoskeletal injury risk. Rehabilitation to improve neuromuscular control may benefit patients with concussion, but access to rehabilitation professionals and/or poor adherence may limit efficacy. Our purpose was to determine the feasibility of an 8-week virtual neuromuscular training (NMT) program administered through a novel smartphone application among physically active, uninjured adul

Preparatory knee flexion movement facilitates faster sideways jumping execution in male collegiate soccer goalkeepers.

Preparatory lower-limb loading conditions may affect the jump-to-reach performance of soccer goalkeepers. This study investigated the effect of pre-jump lower-limb loading/unloading during bilateral knee flexion-extension movements on sideways jump-to-reach performance in 18 male collegiate soccer goalkeepers. Participants performed the two-choice (high and low targets) reaction-time single-leg jump-to-reach task under two conditions: without preparatory movements (no-prep) and with continuous alternating knee extension and flexion movements (prep). The 'go' cue was provided with different pre

Are Landing Biomechanics Altered in Elite Athletes with Chronic Ankle Instability.

This study analyzed landing strategies used by athletes with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and copers compared to uninjured controls. Thirty participants were asked to perform a single-leg forward jump followed by a single-leg landing. Compared to uninjured controls, those with CAI athletes had significantly greater hip flexion and ankle eversion angles at initial landing, suggesting preference for using hip movements and extra ankle eversion angles to avoid ankle inversion when landing. CAI athletes were also found to have significantly decreased peroneus longus activation and higher ankle

Changes in metabolic and muscle damage indicators following a single bout of jump training on stair versus at level.

UNLABELLED: We hypothesized that stair-jump exercise would induce less muscle damage and greater acute metabolic responses than level-jumps. METHODS: Trained males executed 100 unilateral jumps on stairs with one leg, and at level with the other leg, with two weeks hiatus. Maximal isometric voluntary torque (MVC) and rate of torque development (RTD)in the quadriceps, and unilateral vertical jump height (VJ) were determined in the trained leg at pre-exercise,immediately at post- (IP), 24 h and 48 h after exercise. Muscle or Fascial System Lesion (Part II): The Medial Gastrocnemius and the "Tennis Leg" Paradigm.

Muscle injuries have traditionally been interpreted as disruptions of contractile fibers. Increasing evidence, however, highlights the central role of the intramuscular connective tissue system - including endomysium, perimysium, epimysium, aponeuroses, and extracellular matrix - in force transmission, injury susceptibility, and recurrence risk. Medial gastrocnemius strain, or "tennis leg," exemplifies how myoconnective architecture dictates injury mechanics. The biomechanical interplay between the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) and between the MG and soleus (Sol) may

Influences of Different Drop Height Training on Lower Extremity Kinematics and Stiffness during Repetitive Drop Jump.

Drop jump (DJ) is often used as a plyometric exercise to improve jumping performance. Training from improper drop heights and for improper durations lead to unfavorable biomechanical changes in the lower extremities when landing, which result in reduced training effects and even lower extremity injuries. Purpose. To study the effects of repeated DJ training at drop heights of 30 cm, 40 cm, and 50 cm (drop jump height (DJH) 30, DJH40, and DJH50) on lower extremity kinematics and kinetics. The 1st, 50th, 100th, 150th, and 200th DJs (DJ1, DJs50, DJs100, DJs150, and DJs200) were recorded by using
