Free gait in a shallow pool accelerates recovery after exercise in model mice with fibromyalgia.

This study aimed to determine the effect of pool gait exercise using fibromyalgia-induced model mice. The sensory threshold, locomotive behavior, electrocardiogram, and onset time after the gait test in shallow water using male C57BL/6J mice (weight, 30-35 g; n=21) were investigated. To induce fibromyalgia in model mice, reserpine was injected intraperitoneally into wild-type mice once a day for 3 days. Subsequently, the fibromyalgia-induced model mice were randomly classified into two groups as follows: the control group (n=11) and the pool gait group (n=10). The mice in the pool gait group w

Assessing the potential for specimen pooling to streamline nosocomial surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

In hospitals, identification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is important to reduce possible transmissions and serious outcomes. Traditional culture and susceptibility testing requires 48-72 h, whereas Xpert MRSA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can provide accurate MRSA detection in <1 h. Unfortunately, the high cost of such commercial PCRs precludes their use in many laboratories. Using MRSA as a model, this study hypothesized that specimen pooling in a setting of low prevalence could reduce PCR costs and provide rapid results. A total of 424 sequential nasal/groin speci

Patient and Epidemiological Factors Associated With Influenza Testing in Hospitalized Adults With Acute Respiratory Illnesses, 2016-2017 to 2019-2020.

BACKGROUND: Data are limited on influenza testing among adults with acute respiratory illness (ARI)-associated hospitalizations. We identified factors associated with influenza testing in adult ARI-associated hospitalizations across the 2016-2017 through 2019-2020 influenza seasons. METHODS: Using data from 4 health systems in the United States, we identified hospitalizations that had an ARI discharge diagnosis or respiratory virus test. A hospitalization with influenza testing was based on testing performed within 14 days before through 72 hours after admission. We used random forest analysi

Effectiveness of interventions to improve screening for syphilis in pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: About 2·1 million pregnant women have active syphilis every year. Without screening and treatment, 69% of these women will have an adverse outcome of pregnancy. The objectives of this study were to review the literature systematically to determine the effectiveness of screening interventions to prevent congenital syphilis and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: We searched four electronic databases and selected studies to examine evidence for effectiveness of interventions on three outcomes: increased uptake of syphilis testing, increased treatment rates, and reduction in a

Plasma Microrna Profiling in Overweight and Obese Pregnant Women: An Exploratory Pooled-Sample Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal overweight and obesity are associated with metabolic, vascular, and obstetric complications. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are stable in plasma and may reflect obesity-related molecular alterations during pregnancy. AIM: To compare plasma miRNA expression profiles between normal-weight and overweight/obese pregnant women. METHODS: The study included 50 pregnant women: 25 with normal weight and 25 with overweight/obesity. RNA was isolated from individual plasma samples and combined into one pooled RNA sample per study group. The pooled samples were analyzed in technical

The diagnostic value of polymerase chain reaction for ocular tuberculosis diagnosis in relation to antitubercular therapy response: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is currently considered the method of choice for diagnosing ocular tuberculosis. However, the sensitivity and specificity of PCR using ocular samples remain uncertain. Our meta-analysis aimed to review the diagnostic accuracy of PCR testing in confirming ocular tuberculosis, with responses to antitubercular therapy (ATT) as reference indices. METHODS: A systematic literature search of the PubMed, EBSCOHost, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases was performed using the standardized PRISMA guideline. Observational studies reporting both PCR MTb positiv

The role of syphilis self-testing as an additional syphilis testing approach in key populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is causing epidemics in many countries. Syphilis self-testing (SST) has potential to increase testing and treatment coverage in the same manner as documented for self-testing of, for example, HIV, hepatitis C virus, and COVID-19. We aimed to synthesise current evidence on the utility of SST. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and, where possible, meta-analysis. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for publications published from Jan 1, 2000, to Oct 13, 2022. We included publications with original data on any syphilis rapid tests, includin

Clinical utility of microvolt T-wave alternans testing in identifying patients at high or low risk of sudden cardiac death.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that microvolt T-wave alternans (MTWA) testing is a robust predictor of ventricular tachyarrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in at-risk patients. However, recent studies have suggested that MTWA testing is not as good a predictor of "appropriate" implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy as it is a predictor of SCD in patients without ICDs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the utility of MTWA testing for SCD risk stratification in patients without ICDs. METHODS: Patient-level data were obtained from 5 prospective studies of MTWA testing

Efficacy and safety of submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection for gastric submucosal tumors: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) can be an effective treatment for submucosal tumors (SMTs) in the esophagus and cardia. However, STER may be more difficult to perform in the stomach than in the esophagus due to special anatomical and physiological features. The feasibility of STER to remove gastric STMs has not been systematically investigated. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of STER for gastric SMTs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: a comprehensive literature search of the Medline, Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases was

From mixed effects modeling to spike and slab variable selection: A Bayesian regression model for group testing data.

Due to reductions in both time and cost, group testing is a popular alternative to individual-level testing for disease screening. These reductions are obtained by testing pooled biospecimens (eg, blood, urine, swabs, etc.) for the presence of an infectious agent. However, these reductions come at the expense of data complexity, making the task of conducting disease surveillance more tenuous when compared to using individual-level data. This is because an individual's disease status may be obscured by a group testing protocol and the effect of imperfect testing. Furthermore, unlike individual-

Sensitivity for Diagnosing Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis from Manufacturers is 10% Higher than Reported in Peer-Reviewed Publications.

OBJECTIVES: Meta-analyses based on peer-reviewed publications report a sensitivity of approximately 85% for rapid antigen streptococcus tests to diagnose group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis. Because these meta-analyses excluded package inserts, we examined the test characteristics of rapid antigen streptococcal tests and molecular methods that manufacturers report in their package inserts. METHODS: We included tests available in the US market (Food and Drug Administration, period searched 1993-2015) and used package insert data to calculate pooled sensitivity and specificity. Intra- and intertumoral discordance of Claudin-18.2: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Claudin-18.2 status is increasingly used to guide targeted therapy based on immunohistochemistry of limited tumor tissue. Spatial heterogeneity may produce discordant expression patterns within a primary tumor or discordant positivity classification between primary and metastatic sites, limiting the representativeness of a single specimen. No prior meta-analysis has quantified the magnitude of this discordance, either in gastric/gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) cancer or in other tumor types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews a

Prevalence of Celiac Disease in Patients With Iron Deficiency Anemia-A Systematic Review With Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Anemia is common in patients with celiac disease (CD) and a frequent mode of presentation. Guidelines recommend screening patients with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) for CD. However, the reported prevalence of CD in patients with IDA varies. We performed a systematic review to determine the prevalence of biopsy-verified CD in patients with IDA. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of articles published in PubMed Medline or EMBASE through July 2017 for the term "celiac disease" combined with "anemia" or "iron deficiency."
