Estimating NOx removal capacity of urban trees using stable isotope method: A case study of Beijing, China.

It is widely recognized that green infrastructures in urban ecosystems provides important ecosystem services, including air purification. The potential absorption of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by urban trees has not been fully quantified, although it is important for air pollution mitigation and the well-being of urban residents. In this study, four common tree species (Sophora japonica L., Fraxinus chinensis Roxb., Populus tomentosa Carrière, Sabina chinensis (L.)) in Beijing, China, were studied. The dual stable isotopes (15N and 18O) and a Bayesian isotope mixing model were applied to estimate t

Overexpression of bacterial γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase mediates changes in cadmium influx, allocation and detoxification in poplar.

Overexpression of bacterial γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase in the cytosol of Populus tremula × P. alba produces higher glutathione (GSH) concentrations in leaves, thereby indicating the potential for cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation. However, the net Cd(2+) influx in association with H(+) /Ca(2+) , Cd tolerance, and the underlying molecular and physiological mechanisms are uncharacterized in these poplars. We assessed net Cd(2+) influx, Cd tolerance and the transcriptional regulation of several genes involved in Cd(2+) transport and detoxification in wild-type and transgenic poplars. Poplars exhib

Elucidating the drought-responsive changes in poplar cuticular waxes: a GWAS analysis of genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis.

Drought and episodic drought events are major impending impacts of climate change, limiting the productivity of plants and especially trees due to their inherent high transpiration rates. One common mechanism used by plants to cope with drought stress is to change the composition of their leaf cuticular waxes. Cuticular waxes are essential for controlling non-stomatal water loss and are typically composed of a homologous series of very-long-chain fatty acid-derived compounds, as well as flavonoids, tocopherols, triterpenoids, and phytosterols. In this study, we compared the cuticular waxes of

Production of xylooligosaccharides by xylanase from Pichia stipitis based on xylan preparation from triploid Populas tomentosa.

Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) with DP 2-4 are important synbiotics used as food ingredients based on its prebiotic characteristics. In this work, the production of XOS from lignocellulosic material was performed by combined chemical-enzymatic methods. Xylan was prepared from triploid Populas tomentosa, and bioconverted into XOS by crude xylanase solution obtained from Pichia stipitis. The effects of reaction time, temperature, enzyme dosage, and pH value on the production of XOS were fully evaluated. Under the optimal condition (25U g(-1) substrate, pH 5.4 and 50°C), 36.8% of the xylan preparatio

Parent-of-origin effects on allelic expression bias in interspecific poplar hybrids.

In hybrid plants, phenotypic outcomes are governed by interactions between the two parental genomes. However, the mechanisms underlying the interplay of divergent regulatory networks from these genomes remain poorly understood. In this study, we compared gene-level and allele-specific expression patterns, as well as differentially enriched pathways between F₁ and complex backcross (CBC) lines derived from a natural interspecific hybrid population of Populus fremontii (Pf) and P. angustifolia (Pa). Metabolic differences between Pf and Pa which exhibit low and high levels respectively of phenylp

PeTGA1 enhances disease resistance against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides through directly regulating PeSARD1 in poplar.

Basic leucine zipper (bZIP) proteins play important roles in responding to biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. However, the molecular mechanisms of plant resistance to pathogens remain largely unclear in poplar. The present study isolated a TGACG-binding (TGA) transcription factor, PeTGA1, from Populus euphratica. PeTGA1 belongs to subgroup D of the bZIP family and was localized to the nucleus. To study the role PeTGA1 plays in response to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, transgenic triploid white poplars overexpressing PeTGA1 were generated. Results showed that poplars with overexpressed Pe

A General Model to Explain Repeated Turnovers of Sex Determination in the Salicaceae.

Dioecy, the presence of separate sexes on distinct individuals, has evolved repeatedly in multiple plant lineages. However, the specific mechanisms by which sex systems evolve and their commonalities among plant species remain poorly understood. With both XY and ZW sex systems, the family Salicaceae provides a system to uncover the evolutionary forces driving sex chromosome turnovers. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study to characterize sex determination in two Populus species, P. euphratica and P. alba. Our results reveal an XY system of sex determination on chromosome

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) transmitting visceral leishmaniasis and their geographical distribution in China: a review.

After the existence of phlebotomine sand flies was first reported in China in 1910, the distribution of different species and their role in the transmission of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have been extensively studied. Up until 2008, four species have been verified as vectors of VL, namely, Phlebotomus chinensis (Ph. sichuanensis), Ph. longiductus (Ph. chinensis longiductus), Ph. wui (Ph. major wui), and Ph. alexandri. The sand fly species vary greatly depending on the natural environments in the different geographic areas where they are endemic. Ph. chinensis is euryecious and adaptable to di

Effects of dietary transgenic poplar leaf pellets on performance and tissues in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Various studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of Bt crops on animals. Insect-resistant bioassays have revealed that the chitinase-BmkIT combination could be used as a new pest-resistant gene source and might be a complementary alien gene source to the Bt toxin gene. So it is necessary to assay the effects of chitinase-BmkIT plants on animals. RESULTS: Forty 40-day old New Zealand White Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were fed for 60 consecutive days with formulated feed containing dehydrated poplar (Populus cathayana Rehd) leaves harbouring chitinase-BmkIT gene combin

Transcriptomic comparison in the leaves of two aspen genotypes having similar carbon assimilation rates but different partitioning patterns under elevated [CO2].

This study compared the leaf transcription profiles, physiological characteristics and primary metabolites of two Populus tremuloides genotypes (clones 216 and 271) known to differ in their responses to long-term elevated [CO2] (e[CO2]) at the Aspen free-air CO2 enrichment site near Rhinelander, WI, USA. The physiological responses of these clones were similar in terms of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and leaf area index under e[CO2], yet very different in terms of growth enhancement (0-10% in clone 216; 40-50% in clone 271). Although few genes responded to long-term exposure to e[CO2],

The wound-, pathogen-, and ultraviolet B-responsive MYB134 gene encodes an R2R3 MYB transcription factor that regulates proanthocyanidin synthesis in poplar.

In poplar (Populus spp.), the major defense phenolics produced in leaves are the flavonoid-derived proanthocyanidins (PAs) and the salicin-based phenolic glycosides. Transcriptional activation of PA biosynthetic genes leading to PA accumulation in leaves occurs following herbivore damage and mechanical wounding as well as infection by the fungal biotroph Melampsora medusae. In this study, we have identified a poplar R2R3 MYB transcription factor gene, MYB134, that exhibits close sequence similarity to the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) PA regulator TRANSPARENT TESTA2 and that is coinduced

Abscisic acid and nitric oxide confer poplar rust resistance through host defense activation and cross-kingdom regulation of effector genes.

Leaf rust disease caused by Melampsora larici-populina severely impacts the photosynthesis and growth of Populus cathayana, causing substantial productivity losses in forest trees. Abscisic acid (ABA) and nitric oxide (NO) are known to play key roles in plant defense. However, their synergistic interplay in woody plant rust resistance remains unresolved. Here, we investigated the roles of ABA and NO in P. cathayana defense against the biotrophic rust fungus M. larici-populina using physiological, transcriptomic, and transgenic approaches. Exogenous ABA and the NO donor sodium nitroprusside syn

Seasonal variation and drought effects on colonization and community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and dark septate endophytes in desert plants.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) are common root-associated fungal groups in natural ecosystems. However, how their colonization and community composition vary among seasons under natural drought conditions remains unclear. We investigated Populus euphratica and Haloxylon ammodendron in the Ebinur Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve, China. Microscopic observation and high-throughput sequencing were combined to characterize AMF and DSE colonization and community composition across spring, summer, and autumn under low, moderate, and high drought conditions.

Evolutionary origin of a new gene drives root growth in one desert poplar.

Populus euphratica develops an extensive root system that supports survival in arid environments. We identified PeuPLDζ4, a new gene arising from tandem duplication in P. euphratica, and evaluated its effects on root growth and drought-related performance. Phylogenetic and promoter-reporter analyses, enzyme assays, and subcellular localization characterized PeuPLDζ4 divergence. Its effects were evaluated in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana, P. alba var. pyramidalis, wheat, and rice. Two Clones, Two Paths: divergent intrinsic xylem traits and hydraulic responses to prolonged drought in poplar.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts, challenging the growth, hydraulic function and survival of woody plants. Poplar is a fast-growing species widely cultivated for biomass and cellulose production, but it is also highly sensitive to water deficit, with substantial variation among species and clones. METHODS: This study compared the drought responses of two Populus×canadensis clones, 'Tucano' and 'San Martino', under gradually imposed, prolonged water stress. Physiological traits and intrinsic wood anatomical characteristics revealed diffe

Tannic-Acid-Modified Mesoporous Silica Nanocarriers Enhance Chlorantraniliprole Delivery against Hyphantria cunea by Improving Foliar Adhesion.

The fall webworm Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is an invasive pest that severely damages forest resources and disrupts ecological stability. Chlorantraniliprole (CAP) is widely applied to control this pest, yet conventional formulations exhibit poor foliar retention, droplet spreading, and rainfastness. To address these limitations, we prepared tannic acid (TA)-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) loaded with CAP (TA@CAP@MSN) to enhance insecticidal efficacy and foliar adhesion. TA@CAP@MSN were uniform mesoporous nanospheres with 162.95 m2/g specific surface area, 0.241 cm

Genome-Wide Identification of Poplar YABBY Transcription Factors Reveals Dual Roles of PtoYABBY6 in Leaf Polarity and Floral Initiation.

YABBY transcription factors are an essential class of plant-specific macromolecules that regulate cellular processes, response to stress, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, and developmental regulation. Despite their significance in plant macromolecular networks, their roles in woody perennials remain underexplored. In this study, we identified and classified 13 YABBY proteins from Populus trichocarpa and 22 YABBY proteins from P. tomentosa into five distinct subfamilies. Subsequently, we constructed a phylogenetic tree based on the YABBY proteins of five plant species, and we analyzed the con

Differences in allergenic and toxic risks from airborne seed hairs and atmospheric PM2.5: Pollen, bacteria, and chemical components.

Airborne seed hairs released by poplar (Populus spp.) and willow (Salix spp.) during the fruiting period serve as unique carriers of biological particles, transporting substantial quantities of pollen-related plant materials and bacteria. However, its quantitative contribution to human allergenic and toxic risks relative to atmospheric particulate matter during the same period remains unclear. This study collected airborne seed hairs and PM2.5 simultaneously from urban and suburban areas in Hohhot, China, during May 2-8, 2025. We conducted the first quantitative comparison of the allergenic ri

Structural transformation of hemicelluloses and lignin from triploid poplar during acid-pretreatment based biorefinery process.

In order to understand the behaviors of hemicelluloses and lignin under the given acidic conditions with increasing severity, the structural characteristics were elucidated in detail by both wet chemistry methods and spectroscopic analyses in this study. Although acidic pretreatment significantly hydrolyzed the glycosidic linkages in xylan backbone and then reduced the molecular weight of xylan from 89,600 to 19,630 g/mol, a slightly increased amount of glucuronic acid was observed, probably attributing to the maintenance of ester bonds. The serious structural variation occurred in lignin macr

Stimulating natural defenses in poplar clones (OP-367) increases plant metabolism of carbon tetrachloride.

Groundwater contamination by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) presents a health risk as a potential carcinogen and pollutant that is capable of depleting the ozone layer. Although use of poplar trees in a phytoremediation capacity has proven to be cost effective for cleaning contaminated sites, minimizing leaf emission of volatile contaminants remains a pressing issue. We hypothesized that recently fixed carbon plays a key role in CCl4 metabolism in planta yielding nonvolatile trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and that the extent of this metabolism can be altered by heightening plant defenses.
