This study was aimed at measuring concentration of electrolytes, especially K+ in expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) and urine from patients with chronic prostatitis. The concentration of potassium, sodium, chloride, calcium in EPS and urine of 31 controls and 79 patients with prostatitis were measured and analyzed. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of potassium, sodium, chloride and calcium between the patients and the controls. Among the patients treated effectively, potassium concentration was 40.66 +/- 17.10 mmol/l before treatment and 33.42 +/- 17.27 mmol/l after

1. Isolated sheets of rabbit descending colon epithelial cells stripped from their underlying muscle coats were incubated in chambers at 37 degrees C with oxygenated media, and their non-inulin space water, sodium, potassium and chloride contents were subsequently determined. 2. With sodium Ringer bathing both surfaces, amiloride, 10(-4) M, decreased non-inulin space sodium content by 76 mmol/kg dry wt. Ouabain, 10(-3) M, caused loss of non-inulin space potassium which was not completely compensated for by uptake of sodium over 30 min incubation. Chloride and water, therefore, decreased. Amilo

1. In this study we investigated the role of basolateral potassium transport in maintaining cAMP-activated chloride secretion in human colonic epithelium. 2. Ion transport was quantified in isolated human colonic epithelium using the short-circuit current technique. Basolateral potassium transport was studied using nystatin permeabilization. Intracellular calcium measurements were obtained from isolated human colonic crypts using fura-2 spectrofluorescence imaging. 3. In intact isolated colonic strips, forskolin and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) activated an inward transmembrane current (ISC) consis

1. Radio-isotopes have been used to study the effect of noradrenaline on the permeability of the taenia of the guinea-pig caecum to inorganic ions. The preparations were bathed at either 10 or 20 degrees C in solutions containing a high concentration of potassium, in order to depolarize the fibres and so avoid ionic movements secondary to changes in membrane potential.2. Under these conditions noradrenaline increased both inward and outward fluxes of potassium whilst having little effect on the exchange of chloride.3. No effect of noradrenaline on the uptake of sodium could be detected, wherea

The sensitivity of the hemolysis-in-gel (HIG) test with rubella antigen is not improved by chemical linkage of the virus to the erythrocytes, and after such modification, IgM specific antibodies are not detectable. In the influenza HIG test with tetraazotized o-dianisidine (TOD), chromic chloride and potassium periodate as coupling reagents, increased sensitivity was observed with allantoic fluid of infected eggs as antigen. If Tween-ether treated hemagglutinin is used in the HIG test, zones of hemolysis are detectable only after treatment of the erythrocytes with TOD, chromic chloride and pot

Gitelman's syndrome is a primary renal tubular hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. Hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia can cause cardiac tissue excitability and conduction. Global ventricular mechanical function is directly related to the contractile properties of cardiac myocytes, which are largely dependent on the flow of ions such as potassium and magnesium. Here, we show that increased levels of potassium, in addition to magnesium, in a patient with Gitelman's syndrome significantly impacts the timing of ventricular wall motion and the pattern of ventricular strain and torsion. Two-dimensional spe

Even small losses of gastrointestinal secretions when combined with reduced intake of electrolytes may seriously disturb electrolyte balance. Knowledge of the ionic composition of secretions lost is essential in planning therapy. Loss of gastric contents usually results in excessive loss of chloride; in achlorhydria this is not the case. Loss of sodium and potassium may be large in either case and is often underestimated. Small bowel obstruction results in a more balanced loss of electrolyte which may not affect acidbase balance greatly. In diarrhea loss of base predominates, and may result in

A male preterm infant of 32 weeks of gestation with history of severe polyhydramnios during pregnancy presented soon after birth with polyuria with initial sodium chloride loss subsequently followed by increasing potassium loss. After manifestation of hypokalaemia, hypochloraemia, alkalosis and high urinary prostaglandin concentrations, the diagnosis of the neonatal variant of Bartter's syndrome was made. The treatment consisted of administered of large amounts of fluid with sodium chloride and potassium supplementation and indomethacin (1.5 to 2 mg/kg per day).

In 4 cases of metabolic alkalosis with paradoxic aciduria in cattle, generalized muscle weakness was the predominant feature. In 3 of the 4 cases, prolonged anorexia preceded development of muscle weakness and aciduria. Plasma electrolyte concentrations varied but, in 3 of 4 cases, a transient decrease in plasma potassium concentration was detected. In the 3 cases in which prolonged therapy with sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and dextrose was offered, resolution of aciduria was rapid, followed by correction of metabolic alkalosis and return of muscle strength.

Aortic rings from male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were placed in organ chambers filled with Krebs solution, and the isometric tension was recorded. There were no gender differences in responses to potassium chloride or phenylephrine in either intact or endothelium-denuded rings from control animals. Treatment with 10 mg/kg of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) attenuated the contractile response to potassium chloride in intact, but not in endothelium-denuded rings, and suppressed the phenylephrine contractions in rings both with and without endothelium from male and female rats. Endothelium-dependen

A slow intracarotid infusion of hypertonic sodium chloride solution, 350 mEq/L, and potassium chloride, 5 mEq/L, was used to increase serum sodium chloride over a 90-minute period in 85 cats. A slow, steady rise in serum sodium occurred, which reached almost 208 mEq/L at the end of 90 minutes. A concomitant rise in sodium occurred in the cerebrospinal fluid and perilymph. In contrast, the sodium showed only a transient slight increase in the cochlear and vestibular endolymph. Endolymph potassium appeared to rise in order to balance out the increase in sodium concentration of the surrounding an

A 19-year-old normotensive patient had all of the clinical features of Bartter's syndrome: hypokalemia, elevated renin and aldosterone levels and increased excretion of prostaglandin E. In contrast to the patients described by Bartter, the patient had a normal capacity to form solute-free water, suggesting intact loop of Henle function. Baseline potassium and chloride excretion rates were higher than those observed in 5 normal subjects, but the response to intravenous chlorothiazide, a drug which acts in the early distal convolute tubule, was abnormal. While chloride excretion rose by only 61%

We studied the fluid and electrolyte response of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the lightly anesthetized newborn puppy exposed to acute (1-3 h) mild hyponatremia (12% decrease) and hypernatremia (7% increase). The changes in CSF osmolality, sodium, and chloride were equal to those in plasma. Blood acid-base values and CSF PCO2 remained normal, but in CSF there was a transient dilution acidosis in hyponatremia and contraction alkalosis in hypernatremia. In brain tissue, with hyponatremia, brain water increased in proportion to the osmotic stress (a change which was greater than that

Spreading depolarizations (SDs) occur frequently in patients with malignant hemispheric stroke. In animal-based experiments, SDs have been shown to cause secondary neuronal damage and infarct expansion during the initial period of infarct progression. In contrast, the influence of SDs during the delayed period is not well characterized yet. Here, we analyzed the impact of SDs in the delayed phase after cerebral ischemia and the potential protective effect of ketamine. Focal ischemia was induced by distal occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery in C57BL6/J mice. 24 h after occlusion, SDs w

In contrast to the situation in adult cattle there are high concentrations of sodium and low concentrations of potassium in the faeces of suckling calves. It was investigated in this study in which stage of the development of the ruminant these changes in electrolyte levels occur, and whether there are changes in electrolyte levels in urine as well. Samples of faeces and urine from healthy calves were examined fortnightly starting with the 5th day after birth. There was a distinct decrease in sodium concentration in faecal water within the first three weeks of life, i.e. without any relation t

INTRODUCTION: Bartter syndrome (BS) is a rare salt-wasting tubulopathy caused by mutations in genes encoding sodium, potassium, or chloride transporters of the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle and/or the distal convoluted tubule of the kidney. BS is characterized by polyuria, failure to thrive, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, hyperreninemia, and hyperaldosteronism. Potassium and/or sodium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to treat BS. While its symptoms and initial management are relatively well known, long-term outcomes a

Bartter syndrome is characterized by renal potassium and chloride loss, hypokalaemia, hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis and increased plasma renin activity along with elevated angiotensin II and hyperaldosteronism. For diagnosis we conducted biochemical examinations of both amniotic fluid and the mother's urine. Except for potassium, amniotic fluid electrolytes in a mother with a fetus with Bartter syndrome were high. Urinary chloride, sodium and calcium were very low. Thus, the latter parameters may allow prediction of fetal Bartter syndrome during the prenatal period.

The effect of different potassium concentrations on the membrane potential and membrane resistance of rat diaphragm muscle fibres was measured by means of a double sucrose gap method and a microelectrode technique. Concentration measurements showed that the muscle fibres gained sodium and lost potassium in the equilibration period. In the absence of external chloride changing the external potassium concentration from 2.8 mM to potassium-free caused a depolarization of the membrane of about 30 mV and a small increase in membrane resistance. This K-dependent potential change (K-response) was ind

To study the mechanism of attacks in familial hypokalemic paralysis, we recorded resting membrane potentials, action potentials, current-voltage relationships, and isometric forces in intercostal muscle fibers from three patients. In normal extracellular medium, the resting potential was reduced, but membrane conductance was not different from control. Excitability was reduced and the action potentials had no overshoot. On exposure to a 1-mM potassium solution, with or without insulin, the cells depolarized to about -50 mV, and became inexcitable. Over the tested membrane potential range from
