Network and stoichiometry analysis revealed a fast magnesium and calcium deficiency of mulched Phyllostachys violascens.

The imbalanced fertilization and the consequential deterioration on the rhizosphere microbial community (RMC) were two potential reasons for the quick yielding degradation of Phyllostachys violascens (Lei-bamboo), a high-value shoot-oriented bamboo. However, most research only focused on nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; the studies on the dynamics of other nutrients, such as calcium and magnesium; and their driving mechanisms, lags far behind. Thus, Lei-bamboo fields of different mulching and recovery ages were selected to investigate the dynamics of calcium and magnesium in both soil and

Perturbations in electrolyte levels in kenyan children with severe malaria complicated by acidosis.

BACKGROUND: To date, information about the frequency of electrolyte disturbances among children with severe falciparum malaria is limited. METHODS: We describe changes in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate levels in 56 Kenyan children (42 who survived and 14 who died) admitted to the hospital with clinical features of severe malaria (impaired consciousness or deep breathing) complicated by acidosis (base deficit, >8 mmol/L). RESULTS: Mild-to-moderate hypercalcemia was common at admission, particularly among children with severe anemia. Severe hyperkalemia complicated falciparum mal

A compartmental model predicts that dietary potassium affects lithium dynamics in rats.

Lithium is the treatment of choice for manic depression, but therapy often results in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and lithium intoxication. To investigate the effects of dietary potassium on potential side effects of lithium therapy, a mathematical model was built using the modeling program SAAM (Simulation, Analysis, And Modeling). Experimental data modeled were from adult male Sprague-Dawley rats fed diets with or without lithium and one of three levels of potassium for 17 d. A five-compartment model of lithium dynamics was built that was consistent with data from rats fed a lithium-conta

Stool chemistries in patients with unexplained diarrhea.

In approaching the differential diagnosis of unexplained diarrheal disorders, separation of osmotic and secretory causes is important. The osmotic gap between measured stool osmolality and osmolality calculated from stool sodium and potassium concentrations is low in secretory diarrhea and high in osmotic diarrhea. Cholera, villous adenoma and bile salts are among the causes of secretory diarrhea. Causes of osmotic diarrhea include monosaccharidase deficiency, disaccharidase deficiency, excessive use of sugar-free gum and excessive ingestion of magnesium antacids.

A clinical approach to common electrolyte problems: 4. Hypomagnesemia.

Magnesium plays a critical role in many cell functions. Hypomagnesemia may occur because of decreased intake or absorption, internal redistribution or increased loss of this element through either renal or nonrenal routes. Manifestations of magnesium deficiency include alterations in calcium, phosphate and potassium homeostasis along with cardiac disorders such as malignant ventricular arrhythmias refractory to conventional therapy, enhanced sensitivity to digoxin and, possibly, coronary artery vasospasm and sudden death. Other features of magnesium deficiency include a host of neuromuscular a

Hyperkalemic Cardiac Arrest in a Patient with Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

AIM: To highlight the occurrence of cardiac arrest due to hyperkalemia in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis is a commonly encountered condition. These patients can have normal or mildly elevated levels of potassium. Our patient had severe hyperkalemia due to DKA resulting in cardiac arrest. Her high potassium diet and use of angiotensin receptor blocker along with acute kidney injury (AKI) would have also contributed to hyperkalemia. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old female, known case of diabetes mellitus on insulin therapy and hypertension on telmisartan, present

[Incidence of endemic goiter--environmental factors and iodine prophylaxis in Southern Poland].

In Southern Poland a well defined endemic goiter area has been known since 19th century. This region was characterized by low level of iodine in the environment. Iodine prophylaxis in Carpathian endemic area was introduced as early as 1935 at the level of 5 mg/kg of table salt. The goiter prophylaxis programme was interrupted during the Second World War. After the war in the years 1945-1946 epidemiological studies held in Southern Poland paid attention to high percentage of goiter in the population. As the result, potassium iodide salt supplementation started in 1947, but goiter incidence in s

Regulation of collecting tubule adenosine triphosphatases by aldosterone and potassium.

To examine the precise role of potassium and aldosterone on acid-base composition and on collecting tubule ATPases, glucocorticoid-replete adrenalectomized rats were replaced with zero, physiological, or pharmacological doses of aldosterone and were fed varying potassium diets to produce hypokalemia, normokalemia, or hyperkalemia. Radiochemical measurement of ATPase activities showed that collecting tubule H/K-ATPase changed inversely with potassium and not with aldosterone whereas H-ATPase changed directly with aldosterone but not with potassium. When both enzymes changed in the same directio

Characteristic mutations induced in the small intestine of Msh2-knockout gpt delta mice.

BACKGROUND: Base pair mismatches in genomic DNA can result in mutagenesis, and consequently in tumorigenesis. To investigate how mismatch repair deficiency increases mutagenicity under oxidative stress, we examined the type and frequency of mutations arising in the mucosa of the small intestine of mice carrying a reporter gene encoding guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (gpt) and in which the Msh2 gene, which encodes a component of the mismatch repair system, was either intact (Msh2+/+::gpt/0; Msh2-bearing) or homozygously knockout (KO) (Msh2-/-::gpt/0; Msh2-KO). RESULTS: Gpt mutant frequency

Adrenal insufficiency from metastatic colonic carcinoma masquerading as isolated aldosterone deficiency. Report of a case and review of the literature.

A case of adrenal insufficiency secondary to metastatic colonic carcinoma is reported. Because the patient was taking prednisone for an unrelated condition, his initial presentation mimicked isolated aldosterone deficiency with an elevated serum potassium of 8.7 mmol/l. Cortisol deficiency was documented by ACTH testing. The diagnosis of metastatic disease causing adrenal insufficiency was suspected after a computed body scan of the abdomen revealed marked bilateral adrenal enlargement. Adrenal insufficiency secondary to metastatic cancer is reviewed.

The utility of the transtubular potassium gradient in the evaluation of hyperkalemia.

The transtubular potassium gradient (TTKG) is used to gauge renal potassium secretion by the cortical collecting duct, indirectly assessing mineralocorticoid bioactivity in patients who have hypo- or hyperkalemia. TTKG values <6 indicate an inappropriate renal response to hyperkalemia, whereas values >2 during hypokalemia point to renal loss. Hypokalemia is not addressed here. Studies supporting the usefulness of the TTKG in hyperkalemia are limited to case series. This calculation may be most useful in distinguishing hyperkalemic patients who have mineralocorticoid deficiency versus resistanc

Biochemical and antioxidant properties of cream and orange-fleshed sweet potato.

The rate of micronutrient deficiency has been on an increase since the last decade and the utilization of bio-fortified crops could help to alleviate this deficiency and food insecurity in Africa especially in Nigeria. The aim of this study was to compare the biochemical and antioxidant properties of cream-fleshed and orange-fleshed sweet potato. The varieties of OFSP used in this study were mother's delight (MDP) and king J (KJP) orange-fleshed sweet potato while the other variety was cream-fleshed sweet potato (CFSP). The tubers were processed into flour and analyzed for proximate, minerals,

Hyperkalemic distal renal tubular acidosis associated with Rett syndrome.

Renal function was studied in a 7-year-old girl with Rett syndrome (RS) complicated by persistent hyperchloremic hyperkalemic metabolic acidosis. The acidosis was associated with a urine pH above 5.5, positive urinary anion gap and decreased potassium excretion. Plasma renin activity, aldosterone and cortisol levels were normal. Therapy with sodium bicarbonate failed to lower urine pH below 5.5 or increase potassium excretion. Hydrochlorothiazide administration resulted in a fall in urine pH below 5.5 and an increase in potassium excretion as a result of increased distal sodium delivery and in

Myocardial tissue concentrations of magnesium and potassium in men dying suddenly from ischemic heart disease.

Optimum tissue levels of magnesium and potassium ions are essential to the structure and function of the myocardium. We hypothesized that an inapparent deficiency of one or both of these elements might contribute to sudden cardiac death in a susceptible person, and in this study investigated levels of these elements in the myocardium of men experiencing sudden death to determine if there was such an association. Subjects dying suddenly with ischemic heart disease had significantly lower levels of myocardial tissue magnesium and potassium than the controls (men dying of acute trauma). The four

Retinoschisin and novel Na/K-ATPase interaction partners Kv2.1 and Kv8.2 define a growing protein complex at the inner segments of mammalian photoreceptors.

The RS1 gene on Xp 22.13 encodes retinoschisin which is known to directly interact with the retinal Na/K-ATPase at the photoreceptor inner segments. Pathologic mutations in RS1 cause X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS), a hereditary retinal dystrophy in young males. To further delineate the retinoschisin-Na/K-ATPase complex, co-immunoprecipitation was performed with porcine and murine retinal lysates targeting the ATP1A3 subunit. This identified the voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channel subunits Kv2.1 and Kv8.2 as direct interaction partners of the retinal Na/K-ATPase. Colocalization of the

Potassium, magnesium, and electrolyte imbalance and complications in disease management.

Electrolyte balance is a critical issue in managing comorbid conditions in both diseased and elderly patients. Patients with hypertension and diabetes need careful regulation of their calcium and magnesium levels, whereas in patients with congestive heart failure, sodium and potassium levels also are critical. Herein we report the outcome of a round table discussion at which issues of renal magnesium clearance, magnesium and arrhythmic risk, ion balance in heart failure, diabetes, ischemic stress, oxidative stress in the cardiomyopathy of magnesium deficiency, roles of magnesium and potassium

Severe Hypokalemia and Rhabdomyolysis Caused by Conn Syndrome.

Hypokalemia is a common electrolyte abnormality. Generally being asymptomatic, muscular fatigue, paresis and arrhythmia can be seen as the severity of hypokalemia increases. Severe rhabdomyolysis and neuromuscular findings can be seen in severe hypokalemia cases. Presence of hypokalemia can be a precursor of secondary hypertension in hypertensive patients, and also should bring hyperaldosteronism into consideration. Mild hypokalemia is usually seen in primary hype-raldosteronism. However, deficient potassium levels are also seen in some cases. We have shared the case of a hypertensive patient,
