Prey manipulation through headfirst ingestion is a common foraging tactic in predatory taxa. Sawsharks possess a toothed rostrum that is thought to assist in prey capture, but the process from prey contact to ingestion is unknown. This study provides evidence of headfirst ingestion and possible prey orientation in situ through the use of cone beam CT scans in the common sawshark (Pristiophorus cirratus). CT scans provide an efficient method for assessing ingestion and proposing plausible behavioural tactics for food manipulation in a species difficult to observe in the wild or maintain in capt

BACKGROUND: Social insect colonies routinely face large vertebrate predators, against which they need to mount a collective defence. To do so, honeybees use an alarm pheromone that recruits nearby bees into mass stinging of the perceived threat. This alarm pheromone is carried directly on the stinger; hence, its concentration builds up during the course of the attack. We investigate how bees react to different alarm pheromone concentrations and how this evolved response pattern leads to better coordination at the group level.
RESULTS: We first present a dose-response curve to the alarm pherom

Antagonistic coevolutionary relationships provide intense selection pressure which drive changes in the genotype. Predator-prey interactions have caused some venomous snakes and their predators/prey to evolve α-neurotoxin resistance through changes at the orthosteric site of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The presence of negatively charged amino acids at orthosteric site positions 191 and 195 is the ancestral state. These negatively charged amino acids have exerted a selection pressure for snake venom α-neurotoxins to evolve with strong positive charges on their molecular surface, with the

A large body of literature suggests that physically exhausted fish, including those that are released following fisheries interactions, experience behavioural and cognitive constraints and are at elevated risk of predation during homeostatic recovery. However, previous studies have focused on exhausted fish subsequently encountering predators, and not on fish that had been exposed to elevated predation risk prior to exhaustive exercise. Here, we exercised individual schoolmaster snapper (Lutjanus apodus) for 0, 1, or 4 min via hand chases following exposure to conspecific chemical alarm cues o

The elongated mandibles of certain ant species are dexterous grippers that can output a wide range of forces as needed for various tasks. Our combined experimental and theoretical research reveals the multifunctionality of the mandibles of Harpegnathos venator that is facilitated by specific microstructures and characteristic kinematics. First, we found that H. venator can pull off a spider's (Heteropoda venatoria) leg by closing its long mandibles. We observed that the ant usually clamps the spider's leg using the distal or middle part of its mandibles. In contrast, the ant can grip its egg w

Attacks by aquatic predators generate frontal water disturbances characterised by low-frequency gradients in pressure and particle motion. Low-frequency hearing is highly developed in cephalopods. Thus, we examined behavioural responses in juvenile cuttlefish to infrasonic accelerations mimicking main aspects of the hydrodynamic signals created by predators. In the experimental set-up, animals and their surrounding water moved as a unit to minimise lateral line activation and to allow examination of the contribution by the inner ear. Behavioural responses were tested in light versus darkness a

Anthropogenic noise pollution is recognized as a major global stressor of animals. While many studies have assessed the unimodal impacts of noise pollution with a focus on intraspecific acoustic communication, little is known about noise pollution on the perception of visual and chemical information. The 'distracted prey hypothesis' posits that processing noise interferes with processing other information in the brain. Here, we found evidence for such a cross-modal effect of noise on the antipredator behaviour of a freshwater prey fish, the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. In laboratory tr

Stereo or '3D' vision is an important but costly process seen in several evolutionarily distinct lineages including primates, birds and insects. Many selective advantages could have led to the evolution of stereo vision, including range finding, camouflage breaking and estimation of object size. In this paper, we investigate the possibility that stereo vision enables praying mantises to estimate the size of prey by using a combination of disparity cues and angular size cues. We used a recently developed insect 3D cinema paradigm to present mantises with virtual prey having differing disparity

Conflicts between humans and crocodilians are a widespread conservation challenge and the number of crocodile attacks is increasing worldwide. We identified the factors that most effectively decide whether a victim is injured or killed in a crocodile attack by fitting generalized linear models to a 42-year dataset of 87 attacks (27 fatal and 60 non-fatal) by saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) in Australia. The models showed that the most influential factors were the difference in body mass between crocodile and victim, and the position of victim in relation to the water at the time of a

Podisus nigrispinus Dallas (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a predator insect with potential applications in biological control because both nymphs and adults have been shown to prey on other insect pests by injection of toxic salivary gland contents. This study identified non-proteinaceous compounds with insecticidal activity from the saliva of P. nigrispinus in Anticarsia gemmatalis. In particular, the ether extract from P. nigrispinus saliva led to mortality in A. gemmatalis larvae, with a LC50 = 2.04 μL and LC90 = 3.27 μL. N,N-dimethylaniline and 1,2,5-trithiepane fractions were identified as

The phyllosoma, a larva of spiny and slipper lobsters, has an exceptionally flat body and long appendages. It is known to associate with several species of cnidarian jellyfish, a behavior that is not rare in crustaceans. Indeed, phyllosomas clinging onto jellyfish have been observed both in the laboratory and in the natural environment. Wild phyllosomas have been found to contain jellyfish tissues in their hepatopancreas and feces, suggesting that the larvae utilize jellyfish as a food source; however, how they capture jellyfish and what species of jellyfish they prefer have rarely been invest

The theory of intraguild predation (IGP) largely studies effects on equilibrium densities of predators and prey, while experiments mostly concern transient dynamics. We studied the effects of an intraguild (IG) predator, the bug Orius laevigatus, on the population dynamics of IG-prey, the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, and a shared prey, the phytophagous two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae, as well as on the performance of cucumber plants in a greenhouse. The interaction of the predatory mite and the spider mite is highly unstable, and ends either by herbivores overexploiting

Predatory behaviour of the carnivorous marine pteropod mollusk Clione limacina is normally induced by contact with prey. In the absence of prey, a similar behaviour can be induced by injection of serotonin (5-HT) or its precursor, L-5-hydroxytroptophan (5-HTP). It consists of non-stop fast swimming, rapid extrusions of cephaloconi and other components of the actual prey capturing. Neuronal correlates of this phenomenon were investigated using histofluorescence and intracellular recordings. Prior to treatment with 5-HTP only green fluorescence of catecholamines has been revealed. In the CNS and

Fish escape from approaching threats via a stereotyped escape behavior. This behavior, and the underlying neural circuit organized around the Mauthner cell command neurons, have both been extensively investigated experimentally, mainly in two laboratory model organisms, the goldfish and the zebrafish. However, fish biodiversity is enormous, a number of variants of the basal escape behavior exist. In marine gobies (a family of small benthic fishes) which share burrows with alpheid shrimp, the escape behavior has likely been partially modified into a tactile communication system which allow the

Descriptions of new tool-use events are important for understanding how ecological context may drive the evolution of tool use among primate traditions. Here, we report a possible case of the first record of tool use by wild Amazonian capuchin monkeys (Sapajus macrocephalus). The record was made by a camera trap, while we were monitoring caiman nest predation at Mamirauá Reserve in Central Amazonia. An adult individual was registered in a bipedal posture, apparently using a branch as a shovel to dig eggs out of a nest. Caiman eggs are frequently depredated by opportunistic animals, such as the

The nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, is an obligate suction feeder that preys on benthic invertebrates and fish. Its cranial morphology exhibits a suite of structural and functional modifications that facilitate this mode of prey capture. During suction-feeding, subambient pressure is generated by the ventral expansion of the hyoid apparatus and the floor of its buccopharyngeal cavity. As in suction-feeding bony fishes, the nurse shark exhibits expansive, compressive, and recovery kinematic phases that produce posterior-directed water flow through the buccopharyngeal cavity. However, there

The South Polar Skua (Stercorarius maccormicki) is an opportunistic feeder, predator, and scavenger widely distributed in the coastal ecosystems of Antarctica. However, although some studies have explored its foraging behavior, many aspects, including regional variations, remain insufficiently understood. Thus, this study aimed to characterize regional variations in the dietary composition of South Polar Skuas breeding at sites along the Northern Victoria Land coast in the Ross Sea, where environmental conditions vary markedly among colonies. The dietary composition and foraging characteristic

Nestling growth is known to be passively constrained by parental feeding and actively mediated by growth-regulating hormones. While nest predation pressures can vary across geographic regions, few studies have focused on whether and how nestling growth patterns are adjusted in response to differences in predation pressure. We selected two breeding populations of Japanese tits Parus minor in Jilin Province and Liaoning Province as subjects. By experimentally increasing snake predation risk, we tested whether the growth trajectory of nestlings differed between the two populations and whether gro

Acoustic, olfactory, and visual predator cues trigger various adaptive responses among a variety of prey species even when they are under human protection since birth. Previous studies have found that domesticated animals show increased vigilance, stress, flight, and aggregation behaviors in response to predation threats. These investigations, however, did not directly test visual threatening cues alone in animals that communicate more with body language than vocalizations while considering individual temperament and social status. The current study aims to address this issue. Eighteen horses
