Topical corticosteroids are increasingly recognized as relatively common contact sensitizers. Between July 1988 and December 1991 2687 patients undergoing routine patch testing were also tested with tixocortol pivalate (TP). Over the same time period 528 patients were selected for testing with a series of 18 steroids. The efficacy of aqueous suspensions of budesonide nasal spray and fluticasone propionate nasal spray, in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis, was compared in a large, placebo-controlled, two-center study. A 1-week baseline period was followed by a 4- to 6-week treatment period during which 635 adult patients, aged 18-72 years, were randomized to receive either placebo, budesonide 128 micrograms, or 256 micrograms once daily, or fluticasone propionate, 200 micrograms once daily. A placebo-controlled, double blind, cross-over study of inhaled budesonide was carried out to examine its effectiveness in the treatment of chronic airflow limitation (CAL). Fourteen patients (11 males, mean age 66 years) with stable CAL received placebo treatment for four weeks followed by inhaled budesonide 400 micrograms BD for eight weeks. Response was assessed by measuring forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). There was no significant improvement in the overall spirometric measurements and symptom scores except a reduction in daily peak expiratory flow rate fluctuation (p < 0.05)

We report a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case with rheumatoid arthritis taking iguratimod. The patient who continued iguratimod therapy without dose reduction was treated with ciclesonide had an uneventful clinical course, but prolonged detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was observed after resolution of symptoms. The effects of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and ciclesonide on clinical course and viral shedding remain unknown and warrant further investigation.
