Conservative management of posterior tracheal wall injury by endoscopic stent placement in children: Preliminary data of three cases.

The management of tracheal wall lacerations is debated. Current treatments are mainly derived by the experience on adults and include conservative or surgical treatments depending on the clinical condition of the patient. We report our preliminary data with removable tracheal stents in 3 children with tracheal tears and respiratory failure. If performed in specialized centers with appropriate endoscopic and clinical follow-up, airway stents can be considered a valid and safe conservative treatment for tracheal tears and an alternative to intubation or tracheostomy. Further studies are needed t

Primary systemic sclerosis heart involvement: A systematic literature review and preliminary data-driven, consensus-based WSF/HFA definition.

INTRODUCTION: Primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis may cause morpho-functional and electrical cardiac abnormalities and is a common cause of death. The absence of a clear definition of primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis limits our understanding and ability to focus on clinical research. We aimed to create an expert consensus definition for primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis. METHODS: A systematic literature review of cardiac involvement and manifestations in systemic sclerosis was conducted to inform an international and multi-disciplinary task force. In a

Possible predictive role of electrical risk score on transcatheter aortic valve replacement outcomes in older patients: preliminary data.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the predicative power of the electrical risk score (ERS), a noninvasive and inexpensive test obtained by means of a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), in a cohort of elderly patients who had undergone transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). METHODS: Survivors and non-survivors after TAVR at 1-year follow-up were compared in respect to the pre-procedural ERS as well as a number of other clinical and instrumental variables. ERS is composed of seven simple ECG markers: heart rate (>75 bpm); QRS duration (>110 ms); left ventricular hypertrophy (Sokolow-Lyon c

Arm veins versus contralateral greater saphenous veins for lower extremity bypass reconstruction: preliminary data of a randomized study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this randomized study was to determine whether arm vein (AV) or contralateral greater saphenous vein (CGSV) is the better alternative vein source for lower extremity bypass reconstruction. METHODS: Consecutive patients with absent ipsilateral greater saphenous vein undergoing lower extremity revascularization were allocated to group A (AV bypass) or B (CGSV bypass). RESULTS: From 6, 2010, to 11, 2013, 64 patients (32 each group) were randomized. In all, 29 of 93 patients had to be excluded for various reasons. Median age was 76 years vs. 71 years (P = 0.01) for group A

Foetal blood flow measured using phase contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance--preliminary data comparing 1.5 T with 3.0 T.

BACKGROUND: Phase contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance (PC CMR) has emerged as a clinical tool for blood flow quantification but its use in the foetus has been hampered by the need for gating with the foetal heart beat. The previously described metric optimized gating (MOG) technique has been successfully used to measure foetal blood flow in late gestation foetuses on a 1.5 T CMR magnet. However, there is increasing interest in performing foetal cardiac imaging using 3.0 T CMR. We describe our pilot investigation of foetal blood flow measured using 3.0 T CMR. METHODS: Foetal blood flows

A Preliminary Data-Driven Approach for Classifying Knee Instability During Subject-Specific Exercise-Based Game with Squat Motions.

Lower limb functional degeneration has become prevalent, notably reducing the core strength that drives motor control. Squats are frequently used in lower limb training, improving overall muscle strength. However, performing continuously with improper techniques can lead to dynamic knee instability. It worsens with little to no motivation to perform these power training motions. Hence, it is crucial to have a gaming-based exercise tracking system to adaptively enhance the user experience without causing injury or falls. In this work, 28 healthy subjects performed exergame-based squat training,

Evaluating autologous peritoneum grafting for enhanced healing of bile duct injuries: A preliminary data from an animal study.

Increased incidence of laparoscopic cholecystectomy-related bile duct injuries (BDIs), combined with its risk of serious complications and mortality, highlights the need for a more effective repair technique. Although the use of autologous graft in BDI repair has been promoted, the role of autologous parietal peritoneum remains underexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of autologous parietal peritoneum grafts in rabbit models of partial BDI, emphasizing its effect on the expression of cluster of differentiation 68 (CD68) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). An experi

TAS2R38 Bitter Taste Receptor Polymorphisms in Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps Preliminary Data in Polish Population.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) affects 5-12% of the general population, and the most challenging patients are those with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). Its complexity, unpredictability, and difficulties in selecting a treatment plan individually for each patient prompted scientists to look for possible genetic causes of this disease. It was proven that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TAS2R38 gene may affect the mobility and the activity of the ciliated epithelium of the upper respiratory tract what can contribute to individual differences in susceptibility to CRS. There are two common h

Role of intra-operative sentinel lymph node biopsy in oral cavity and oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma: preliminary data.

In patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx, the presence of latero-cervical lymph node metastases was found to be the most important of the better known prognostic factors. Still, today, the most reliable technique by which to detect the presence of lymph node metastases is surgery aimed at the dissection of the latero-cervical space; albeit, this surgical procedure has been shown to be an over-treatment in a large percentage of patients presenting squamous cell carcinoma, clinically, radiologically and histologically negative, at neck level. The technique of in

Heritable fragile sites on human chromosomes. VIII. Preliminary population cytogenetic data on the folic-acid-sensitive fragile sites.

The incidence of the autosomal folic-acid-sensitive fragile sites in 524 institutionalized retardates (.0095) was found to be significantly higher than in 1,019 unselected neonates (.00098), suggesting that heterozygosity for these fragile sites may not be as harmless as previously thought. When one of the parents of an index case was found to carry the fragile site, that parent was always the mother. The fragile site at Xq27 was not found among the neonates studied, but was present in 1.6% of the institutionalized retarded males examined; if this fragile site occurs in normal males, then it d

Iron deficiency in pernicious anemia: Specific features of iron deficient patients and preliminary data on response to iron supplementation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: While vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency is considered as the hallmark of pernicious anemia (PA), iron deficiency (ID) is also prevalent. Indeed, this auto immune gastritis is responsible for parietal cell atrophy and increase in gastric pH, leading to impaired iron absorption. We compared PA patients' features according to their iron status at PA diagnosis, and we assessed the iron status recovery after oral or intravenous iron supplementation. METHODS: We prospectively included patients presenting with a newly diagnosed PA in a tertiary referral hospital between November 2018 a

Molecular biomarkers of dysphagia targeted exercise induced neuroplasticity: A review of mechanistic processes and preliminary data on detraining effects.

While molecular adaptations accompanying neuroplasticity during physical exercises are well-established, little is known about adaptations during dysphagia-targeted exercises. This research article has two primary purposes. First, we aim to review the existing literature on the intersection between resistance (strength) training, molecular markers of neuroplasticity, and dysphagia rehabilitation. Specifically, we discuss the molecular mechanisms of two potential molecular markers: brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in exercise-induced neuroplastic
