Combination Extended Smoking Cessation Treatment Plus Home Visits for Smokers With Schizophrenia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of people with schizophrenia have a diagnosis of tobacco dependence during their lifetime. A major obstacle to reducing the burden of cigarette smoking in this population is that these smokers have lower quit rates when undergoing standard treatment compared to smokers with no mental illness. We sought to determine if combination extended treatment (COMB-EXT) and home visits (HV) would lead to improved outcomes in smokers with schizophrenia. METHODS: Thirty-four cigarette smokers with schizophrenia completed either COMB-EXT with HV, COMB-EXT without HV, or treatment

Proposals for Improving Maternal Safety (2024 Edition): Insights From the Analysis of Maternal Deaths in Japan.

The Proposals for Improving Maternal Safety (2024 Edition) were developed by the Japan Maternal Death Exploratory Committee and the Japan Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists based on systematic reviews of 640 maternal deaths reported nationwide between 2010 and 2024. Obstetric hemorrhage remained the leading cause of maternal death, followed by intracranial hemorrhage, amniotic fluid embolism, suicide, cardiovascular disease, infection, and pulmonary disease. In 2024, maternal deaths increased sharply to 47, largely driven by a resurgence of hemorrhage-related deaths, while suicide

Efficacy of an internet-based self-help intervention to reduce co-occurring alcohol misuse and depression symptoms in adults: study protocol of a three-arm randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In the general population, alcohol use disorder and depression more often occur together than any other combination of a mental illness with a substance use disorder. It is important to have a cost-effective intervention that is able to reach at-risk individuals in the early stages of developing alcohol use disorders and depression disorders. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This paper presents the protocol for a 3-arm multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) to test the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the combined internet-based self-help intervention Take Care of You (TCOY) to re

Sex crime recidivism. Evaluation of a sexual offender treatment program.

Evaluations of programs for sex offenders report mixed results, are costly, and require validation. This study examines recidivism following a sexual offender treatment program in an Australian male offender population over an average at-risk period of 5 years and 1 month in the community. The group format, cognitive-behavioral program was offered to a subgroup of adult male prisoners. Subsequent reoffense types and rates for program completers, dropouts, and controls were compared. No statistically significant recidivism reduction was observed following participation in this sexual offender t

[Autism spectrum disorders in adolescent sexually inappropriate behavior and sex offending].

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in juvenile sex offenders present a unique challenge in forensic child and adolescent psychiatry. Specific characteristics of ASD, such as deficits in social cognition and obsessions, may theoretically contribute to sexually inappropriate behavior (SIB), however this has been scarcely studied in adolescents. Research on normative sexual development in adolescents with ASD shows no significant differences compared to neurotypical peers. AIM: To synthesize the available evidence of the relationship between ASD, SIB and sexual offending in adolescents.

Metacognitive Therapy in Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A review.

Metacognitive therapy is a relatively novel and growing psychotherapeutic approach. Within the last 20 years, several metacognitive-oriented therapy methods have been developed. They are metacognitive therapy which was developed by Wells, metacognitive training which was produced by Moritz et al. especially for patients with psychotic disorder, and metacognitive reflection and insight therapy for psychotic patients. Among them, the most structured one seems the metacognitive therapy. The main notion of metacognitive therapy is to alter the dysfunctional metacognitive interpretations and strate

[Psychological intervention during pregnancy. A multidisciplinary hospital network].

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and the puerperium are vulnerable periods in every woman's life. It is important to catch and treat signs of mental distress so as to prepare the woman for her approaching delivery, to optimize her role as a mother, and to prevent development of severe psychopathology. We describe a professional network (midwife, obstetrician, psychologist, and child psychiatrist) at a Danish county hospital, which offers the pregnant woman psychological therapy and/or psychiatric treatment when needed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study includes a retrospective analysis of 106 consecutiv

INTRODUCTION: On a global scale, bringing together schools and public child psychiatry services is favored to promote the development of early interventions that could improve health trajectories, from prevention to treatment, for children exposed to psychological and psychiatric difficulties. In a public health perspective, contextualizing these practices is essential in order to ensure their sustainability and efficiency. This article sheds light on the stakes of these partnerships and their advantages in responding to the health, social, and economic mark that has been left behind by the cr

Frequency of psychiatric comorbid symptoms in bipolar disorder patients in remission.

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric comorbidity has been detected in one-third of bipolar patients. The illness itself may be a precipitating factor for developing substance use and anxiety disorders. Comorbid anxiety disorders with bipolar disorder (BD) are associated with decreased chances of recovery, poorer role functioning, and quality of life, and greater likelihood of suicide attempts. Hence, identifying comorbid symptoms in remitting patients has important preventive and therapeutic implications. AIMS: The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of psychiatric comorbid symptoms in patien

[Women's experiences with a pregnancy relapse prevention plan to prevent mental health symptom relaps].

BACKGROUND: For women with a known psychiatric disorder, the perinatal period carries an increased risk of mental health relapse. Drawing up and using a signal plan for pregnancy and the postpartum period (SPPP) can be an important intervention. AIM: Pregnant women with a mental health diagnosis have an increased risk of relapse and are at risk for the development of postpartum psychopathology. During this period a pregnancy relapse prevention plan (PRPP) can be made that describes the risks, symptoms of relapse and related interventions. The main goal of this study is to describe the lived e

The Joint Commission on the Mental Health of Children, 1965-1970: Emotional disturbance, race and paths not taken in child psychiatry.

The Joint Commission on the Mental Health of Children (JCMHC) was a sprawling, multidisciplinary project that took shape in the years immediately after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Participants included child psychiatrists, educators, psychologists, social workers, philanthropists and other laypeople and professionals interested in the plight of children. While the original inspiration for the JCMHC was to address the potential for violence from disturbed children and adolescents, its findings and recommendations were an indictment of American society itself in which poor ch

Aberrant resting-state functional connectivity of major depressive disorder with higher risk of suicide.

AIM: Suicide prevention for depressive patients is an important clinical issue in psychiatry. However, not all depressive patients plan or attempt suicide. In this study, we investigated the differences of functional brain networks between a high-risk group and a low-risk group for suicide by comparing resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC). METHODS: The subjects were 29 patients with major depressive disorder, nine of whom had attempted suicide. The suicidal ideation of all subjects was assessed with the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, then the subjects were divided into two gr

[Pharmacological Treatment of Alcohol Withdrawal].

INTRODUCTION: Excessive chronic alcohol users, and particularly patients with alcohol use disorder, may present an alcohol withdrawal syndrome if they abruptly stop drinking. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome requires pharmacological treatment for the treatment of withdrawal symptoms and to prevent withdrawal complications. Medically assisted withdrawal treatment is used in alcohol treatment units, but it is also frequently required in patients admitted to hospital for other conditions. METHODS: Review of major guidelines covering treatment of withdrawal syndrome with the aim to describe recent evi

Assessment and screening tools for childbirth-related psychological trauma in nursing practice - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Every year, 134 million births are recorded worldwide. Nearly a third of women describe psychotraumatic symptoms related to childbirth. Post-traumatic stress disorder in the post-partum period affects between 3.1% and 6.3% of mothers. It can lead to relational disturbances in the mother-child bond and affect the child's development. Due to the under-detection of this disorder, early detection and treatment are necessary. This literature review aims to evaluate and compare the psychometric properties of screening and assessment tools for birth-related psychological tra

Cell-Type-Specific WTAP and ALKBH5-Mediated m6A Methylation Orchestrates Mental Disorders via Gut-Brain Axis Metabolite Signaling: Multi-Omics Evidence and Pyroptosis-Associated Loop Mechanism.

INTRODUCTION: Mental disorders affect one billion people and contribute 5% of global DALYs. Although N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification, gut microbiota, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolites, and pyroptosis have been implicated in disease pathogenesis, the directionality and magnitude of causal links remain elusive. We integrated two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) with single-cell eQTL data to generate hypotheses regarding these relationships. METHODS: Using large-scale GWAS summary statistics, we estimated the causal effects of m6A regulators, gut microbiota, CSF metabolites, and pyr
