Panic disorder (PD) is an acute paroxysmal anxiety disorder with poorly understood pathophysiology. The dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG) is involved in the genesis of PD. However, the downstream neurofunctional changes of the dPAG during panic attacks have yet to be evaluated in vivo. In this study, optogenetic stimulation to the dPAG was performed to induce panic-like behaviors, and in vivo positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 18F-flurodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) was conducted to evaluate neurofunctional changes before and after the optogenetic stimulation. Compared with the baseline,

The human cortex is organized around primary sensory-motor landmarks, but the way these distances shape large-scale functional organization remains unclear. Using geodesic measures in males and females, we show that global minimum distance to sensory-motor landmarks aligns with the principal gradient of intrinsic connectivity, reflecting the shift from unimodal to heteromodal cortex, while equidistance between landmarks captures complementary organizational patterns. Heteromodal networks, including default mode, control, and limbic systems, occupy cortical regions that are both distant from pr

PURPOSE: to evaluate the effect of biofeedback (BF) rehabilitation on the visual function and on the activity of primary visual cortex (PVC) in patients with Stargardt's disease owing to mutations in the ABCA4 gene (STGD1).
METHODS: This was a single-center, controlled, randomized study. Twenty-four patients with STGD1 were randomized into two groups: a treatment group (TG) undergoing BF rehabilitation and a control group (CG). Treatment with BF consisted of a 10-minute session per eye performed weekly for 12 weeks. The subjects underwent a baseline and 3-month follow-up visits, including bes

To study the functional involvement of the visual cortex in Braille reading, we applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over midoccipital (MOC) and primary somatosensory (SI) cortex in blind subjects. After rTMS of MOC, but not SI, subjects made significantly more errors and showed an abolishment of the improvement in reading speed following repetitive presentation of the same word list, suggesting a role of the visual cortex in repetition priming in the blind.

PURPOSE: We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging associated with brain activity to evaluate the abnormality of the visual pathway in hemianoptic patients.
METHODS: We studied five patients with homonymous hemianopsia caused by retrochiasmal lesions and five control subjects. On the basis of a blood oxygenation level-dependent contrast mechanism, magnetic resonance imaging was performed with a standard clinical 1.5-tesla system. We evaluated the asymmetrically increased signal intensities in the calcarine cortex during visual stimulation and compared them with the findings of Goldma

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether visual perceptual measures in people who experience visual snow are consistent with an imbalance between inhibition and excitation in visual cortex.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with visual snow and 18 controls participated. Four visual tasks were included: center-surround contrast matching, luminance increment detection in noise, and global form and global motion coherence thresholds. Neuronal architecture capable of encoding the luminance and contrast stimuli is present within primary visual cortex, whereas the extraction of global motion and form signals requir

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of vision caused by abnormal visual experience during early childhood that is often considered to be untreatable in adulthood. Recently, it has been shown that a novel dichoptic videogame-based treatment for amblyopia can improve visual function in adult patients, at least in part, by reducing inhibition of inputs from the amblyopic eye to the visual cortex. Non-invasive anodal transcranial direct current stimulation has been shown to reduce the activity of inhibitory cortical interneurons when applied to the primary motor or visual cortex. In this do

Damage to the primary visual cortex or its afferent white matter tracts results in loss of vision in the contralateral visual field that can present as homonymous visual field deficits. Evidence suggests that visual training in the blind field can partially reverse blindness at trained locations. However, the efficacy of visual training is highly variable across participants, and the reasons for this are poorly understood. It is likely that variance in residual neural circuitry following the insult may underlie the variation among patients. Many stroke survivors with visual field deficits reta

Experimental data on cortical reorganization in blind subjects using H(2)(15)O positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed activation of the visual cortex related to Braille reading and tactile discrimination tasks in congenitally and early blind subjects. The purpose of our study was to differentiate whether occipital activation of blind subjects during Braille reading is task specific or only triggered by sensory or motor area activation. Twelve congenitally and early-onset blind subjects were studied with fMRI during Braille reading, discriminating n

The primate neocortex is organized as hierarchical networks of functionally distinct regions. In the dorsal visual stream network, information is conveyed from primary visual (V1) to posterior parietal (PPC) and dorsolateral prefrontal (DLPFC) cortices. This information transfer is mediated primarily by layer 3 pyramidal neurons (L3PNs), which differ across these regions in morphology, excitability, and intracellular Ca2+ regulation. These region-specific L3PN properties may be influenced by alternative splicing (AS) of pre-mRNA, which occurs extensively in the human brain. To explore the pote

Sensory systems do not work in isolation; instead, they show interactions that are specifically uncovered during sensory loss. To identify and characterize these interactions, we investigated whether visual deprivation leads to functional enhancement in primary auditory cortex (A1). We compared sound-evoked responses of A1 neurons in visually deprived animals to those from normally reared animals. Here, we show that visual deprivation leads to improved frequency selectivity as well as increased frequency and intensity discrimination performance of A1 neurons. Furthermore, we demonstrate in vit

In this article, we consider both the ventral temporopolar cortex and the perirhinal cortex (areas 35 and 36) as the anterior ventromedial temporal (aVMT) cortex, and discuss its role based on recent data in monkeys and human subjects. In monkeys, the aVMT cortex receives its primary input from area TE, and only minor input from other cortical areas. Laminar patterns of connections suggest that the aVMT cortex is a hierarchically higher-order area than area TE. Lesions of this cortex produce deficits in the learning and performance of visual memory tasks. Neurons in the aVMT cortex respond sel

The purpose of this study is to report different patterns of visual cortex activation in patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome as compared with healthy control subjects. Utilizing a visual paradigm of flashing lights, three children with Sturge-Weber syndrome were studied with functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results are compared with those documented in eight normal sedated children, and six young adult awake volunteers, using the same paradigms. All adult volunteers manifested bilateral activation in primary visual cortex (Brodmann's 17 and 18 areas). Two of them also had activation

Voluntary allocation of visual attention is controlled by top-down signals generated within the Frontal Eye Fields (FEFs) that can change the excitability of lower-level visual areas. However, the mechanism through which this control is achieved remains elusive. Here, we emulated the generation of an attentional signal using single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation to activate the FEFs and tracked its consequences over the visual cortex. First, we documented changes to brain oscillations using electroencephalography and found evidence for a phase reset over occipital sites at beta freque

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows observing cerebral activity not only in separated cortical regions but also in functionally coupled cortical networks. Although moderate doses of ethanol slowdown the neurovascular coupling, the functions of the primary sensorimotor and the visual system remain intact. Yet little is known about how more complex interactions between cortical regions are affected even at moderate doses of alcohol. Therefore the method of psychophysiological interaction (PPI) was applied to analyze ethanol-induced effects on the effective connectivity in the vis

Neocortical circuits use synaptic and intrinsic forms of homeostatic plasticity to stabilize key features of network activity, but whether these different homeostatic mechanisms act redundantly or can be independently recruited to stabilize different network features is unknown. Here, we used pharmacological and genetic perturbations both in vitro and in vivo to determine whether synaptic scaling and intrinsic homeostatic plasticity (IHP) are arranged and recruited in a hierarchical or modular manner within layer 2/3 (L2/3) pyramidal neurons in the rodent primary visual cortex (V1). Surprising

Primary visual cortex (V1) has long served as a model system for understanding cortical organization. Although its structural and functional properties vary markedly across its surface, patterns of covariation suggest possible underlying constancies. Such constancies would imply that V1 is composed of multiple identical units whose visual properties differ only due to differences in their inputs. To test this, we used fMRI to investigate how V1 cortical magnification and preferred spatial frequency covary with eccentricity and polar angle, measured in 40 observers. V1 cortical magnification an
