Structural and metabolic brain correlates of arithmetic word-problem solving in Huntington's disease.

Individuals with pre-manifest and early symptomatic Huntington's disease (HD) have shown deficits in solving arithmetic word-problems. However, the neural correlates of these deficits in HD are poorly understood. We explored the structural (gray-matter volume; GMV) and metabolic (18F-FDG PET; SUVr) brain correlates of arithmetic performance using the recently developed HD-word problem arithmetic task (HD-WPA) in seventeen preHD and sixteen HD individuals. Symptomatic participants showed significantly lower scores in the HD-WPA than preHD participants. Lower performance in the HD-WPA was associ

Verbal problem-solving in agenesis of the corpus callosum: Analysis using semantic similarity.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies demonstrated that individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) experience difficulties in novel and complex problem-solving. The present study investigated verbal problem-solving, deductive reasoning, and semantic inference in AgCC. METHOD: Capacity for semantic inference was tested in 25 individuals with AgCC and normal-range intelligence compared to 29 neurotypical controls. The Word Context Test (WCT) of Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System was used, employing a novel method of analysis (semantic similarity) to detect trial-by-trial progress toward

Effects of Online Cooperative Learning on Students' Problem-Solving Ability and Learning Satisfaction.

As technology changes, it is becoming more common in education for students to acquire knowledge from sources other than just their teachers. In the face of a diverse student background, teachers have to make adjustments in their instruction so that students do not simply listen. Student-based educational philosophy aims to combine instructional methods with cooperative learning to allow students to change from passive learning to active knowledge construction, reinduce students' learning motivation and passion, and enhance students' self-learning effectiveness. Focusing on college students in

CT Fractional Flow Reserve: A Practical Guide to Application, Interpretation, and Problem Solving.

CT fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) is a physiologic simulation technique that models coronary flow from routine coronary CT angiography (CTA). To evaluate lesion-specific ischemia, FFRCT is measured 2 cm distal to a stenotic lesion. FFRCT greater than 0.8 is normal, 0.76-0.8 is borderline, and 0.75 or less is abnormal. FFRCT should always be interpreted in correlation with clinical and anatomic coronary CTA findings. FFRCT increases the specificity of coronary CTA in the evaluation of coronary artery disease, decreases the prevalence of nonobstructive disease in invasive coronary angiography (

Innovative problem-solving in a threatened gull species, the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus).

Innovation, a process that plays an important role in the ecology and evolution of species, is considered an expression of behavioral flexibility in animals. Here we analyzed innovative problem-solving ability and performance enhancement through learning in the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus), under controlled processes and experimental conditions. Trials were undertaken with nine adult individuals captured at a highly urbanized coastal area of Argentina. Each individual was presented with a Plexiglas box that could be opened by pushing or pulling two lids, each lid leading to a separated food

Peer victimization, rumination, and problem solving as risk contributors to adolescents' depressive symptoms.

The author examined the integration of 2 studies of literature on the development of depressive symptoms in adolescents, addressing ruminative coping styles and peer victimization. In particular, the author tested whether increasing levels of victimization and rumination along with perceived problem solving skills in Turkish adolescents are predictive of depressive symptoms. Participants were 250 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years. The author conducted hierarchical multiple regression analyses to examine the joint and separate predictive power of problem solving, rumination, and v

Affectivity in the problem-solving interactions of schizophrenia patients and their family members.

This study sought to examine the relationship between symptomatology and the affect expressed between individuals with schizophrenia and their family members. It was hypothesized that, because of their impact on patient social behavior and potential burden on relatives, greater negative symptoms would be associated with less emotional expression in patients but would be related to the greater expression of negative emotions in their relatives within a problem-solving discussion. Informed by research on the structure of emotion, a broad assessment of affect, including Negativity, Positivity, an

A transactional model of oppositional behavior: underpinnings of the Collaborative Problem Solving approach.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) refers to a recurrent pattern of developmentally inappropriate levels of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. ODD is one of the most common (and debilitating) comorbid disorders within Tourette's disorder (TD). Diverse psychosocial treatment approaches have been applied to children's ODD-related behaviors. In this paper, the authors articulate a transactional developmental conceptualization of oppositional behavior and describe a cognitive-behavioral model of intervention-called collaborative problem solving (CPS

Everyday problem solving in elderly women: contributions of residence, perceived control, and age.

This study examined the use of relativistic operations in everyday problem solving by elderly women. Thirty-two community residents and 32 nursing hostel residents aged between 65-90 years participated. Structured interviews canvassed the role of residence and other factors thought to contribute to the maintenance of problem-solving skills. Path analysis was used to test the developed model of the influences of age, engagement in problem-solving activities, control orientation, problem familiarity and residence on the use of relativistic operations. Partial support was found for the proposed m

Use of surface potential spectral characteristics for solving the inverse problem in electroneurography.

The changes in the power spectra of single-fibre extracellular action potentials (SFEAPs) generated in an infinite anisotropic frequency-dependent volume conductor, which occurred as a result of alterations in the propagation velocity v and duration T(in) of the intracellular action potential (IAP) were analytically determined. Effects of the temporal and spatial dispersions of almost synchronously activated fibres on the power spectrum of compound extracellular potentials (CEPs) were analysed for different shapes and sizes of the activated fibres' territory. It was found that, as a result of

Assertiveness and problem-solving training for mildly mentally retarded persons with dual diagnoses.

This study investigated the differential effectiveness of assertiveness and problem-solving training on dually diagnosed patients' adaptive social behavior, distress and psychiatric symptoms, anger control, and problem-solving coping skills using a counterbalanced design. Assessments were conducted at pretreatment, midphase, posttreatment, and a 3-month follow-up examination. A combined assertiveness and problem-solving training package was effective for treatment of individuals with mild mental retardation with dual psychiatric diagnoses. Specifically, improvements occurred regarding both sel

Situational social problem-solving skills and self-esteem of aggressive and nonaggressive boys.

This study was designed to assess specific social problem-solving, perceived competence, and self-esteem characteristics of 20 aggressive and 18 nonaggressive boys. Significant behavioral differences existed between the groups. The problem-solving measure provided for qualitative assessment of specific problem solutions that children consider, varying according to the interpersonal context of conflicts with peers, teachers, and parents and to the level of others' intent in conflicts (ambiguous frustration and hostile provocation). In univariate analyses, aggressive children had poorer self-est

Development of a problem-solving ability learning model for children with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Enhancing problem-solving abilities (PSA) in children with intellectual disabilities is critical for fostering independence and adaptive skills. The initial PCTL- model integrated phenomenon-based learning (PhBL), cognitive coaching (CC), task analysis (TA), and optimal learning environments (LE) to address the unique educational needs of this population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study employed a two-phase approach. In phase 1, a conceptual framework for the PCTL model was synthesized through a systematic review of existing literature and an analysis of the teaching contexts spec

Friendship relationships, psychological well-being, and social problem solving in primary school students.

During the primary school years, friendships between children gradually begin to strengthen. During this process, establishing and maintaining friendships are closely related to children's psychological well-being (PWB). However, the development of this relationship can be better understood through the mediating role of social problem-solving (SPS) skills. Within the scope of the study, the nature of friendship and the meaning children attribute to it, as well as the processes of defining problems in social life, including problem-solving, producing solutions, and evaluating them, were examine

Comparison of matching the compound or elements as a differential problem-solving response.

Differential observing responses (DORs) are additional response requirements used to promote orientation to a stimulus in a discrimination task. Farber and Dickson (2023) recently provided a DOR taxonomy, and these authors reported that no prior research has compared the effects of distinct DOR requirements. We compared the effects of two DOR requirements on textual responding by five children exhibiting reading deficits. Participants read a daily word list and were required to emit DORs that involved matching the compound or individual elements of the target stimulus. When a word was unknown,

Parenting Influences on Frontal Lobe Gray Matter and Preterm Toddlers' Problem-Solving Skills.

Children born preterm often face challenges with self-regulation during toddlerhood. This study examined the relationship between prematurity, supportive parent behaviors, frontal lobe gray matter volume (GMV), and emotion regulation (ER) among toddlers during a parent-assisted, increasingly complex problem-solving task, validated for this age range. Data were collected from preterm toddlers (n = 57) ages 15-30 months corrected for prematurity and their primary caregivers. MRI data were collected during toddlers' natural sleep. The sample contained three gestational groups: 22-27 weeks (extrem

Perspective on solving the problem of declining interest in physical activity in Poland.

One of the leading areas of Polish research addressed in the physical culture sciences, is the declining interest in physical activity. The likely reason for this situation may be the inadequate communication of physical culture to today's generations: BB (baby boomers), X (great unknowns), Y (millennials), Z (snowflakes), Alpha (digital). Therefore, the aim of this article is to address the problem of declining interest in physical activity in Poland by identifying the appropriate approach of teachers, trainers and instructors to today's generations. The specifics of BB, X, Y, Z and Alpha gen

The unique contributions of day and night sleep to infant motor problem solving.

The current study sought to tease apart the unique contributions of napping and nighttime sleep to infant learning, specifically in the context of motor problem solving. We challenged 54 walking infants to solve a novel locomotor problem at three time points-training, test, and follow-up the next morning. One group of infants napped during the delay between training and test. Another group did not sleep during the delay. A third group received the test immediately after training with no delay. Only the Nap group's strategy choices continued to improve through the follow-up session, suggesting

Interpersonal dysfunction in individuals high in chronic worry: relations with interpersonal problem-solving.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal dysfunction has been proposed as an important maintenance factor in chronic worry and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Perceptions of problems and the problem-solving process as threatening, and unhelpful (e.g. avoidant, impulsive) problem-solving styles are implicated in worry and have also been suggested to be associated with dysfunctional interpersonal styles. AIMS: The present study assessed the relationships between interpersonal dysfunction and problem-solving orientation, approach, and effectiveness in a sample of individuals high in chronic worry and inves

Mind wandering in creative problem-solving: Relationships with divergent thinking and mental health.

Previous research has shown that mind wandering has both positive and negative effects. Mind wandering may improve creative problem solving; however, it could also lead to negative moods and poor mental health. It has also been shown that some forms of mental illness are positively related to creativity. However, the three factors of mind wandering, divergent thinking, and mental health have not been examined simultaneously, so it is possible that these relationships are manifested by spurious correlations. Therefore, we examined the relations among the three factors while controlling for each
