The effect of chronic tracheotomy on the acquisition of voice, speech, and language skills was studied. Children with chronological ages of 16 months to 41 months were evaluated for Receptive Communication Age (RCA) and Expressive Communication Age (ECA). Results indicate a consistent deviation of (on the average) 4.8 months delay in RCA and 9 months delay in ECA. An habilitation program for early intervention in voice, speech and language stimulation is described, with follow-up data on 3 children. A progression from non-meaningful, non-vocal communication to more meaningful and functional co

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) serving students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing (Deaf/hh) and their deaf education counterparts must navigate complexities in language that include modalities that are spoken or signed and proficiency, which is often compromised. This tutorial describes a practice-informed framework that conceptualizes and organizes a continuum of auditory and visual language supports with the aim of informing the practice of the SLP whose training is more inherently focused on spoken language alone, as well as the practice of the teacher of the Deaf/hh (TDHH) wh

Autistic Disorders (AD) are characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, as well as by stereotyped behaviors and interests. Early intervention programs in AD aim to improve several aspects of the child's abilities: joint attention, play abilities, language development, and especially social interaction and communication. In this review article based on a selective literature search, the relatively best empirically based early intervention programs will be discussed with a focus on the proven efficacy of these interventions.

The critical elements in the Montessori philosophy are respect for the child, individualization of the program to that child, and the fostering of independence. With her research background, Maria Montessori devised a multisensory developmental method and designed materials which isolate each concept the teacher presents to the child. In presenting these materials the teacher observes the concept and skill development level of the child, ascertaining areas of strength and weakness and matching the next presentation to the child's level of development. Using small sequential steps, the teacher w

As the field of education of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) continues to diversify, postsecondary institutions must pay close attention not only to the changing needs of d/Dhh students but to the practitioners they are preparing to serve this population. Students who are d/Dhh and come from homes where a language other than English or American Sign Language is used--d/Dhh Multilingual Learners (DMLs)--constitute 19.4%-35.0% of the d/Dhh student population (Gallaudet Research Institute, 2013). In the present article, part of a special American Annals of the Deaf issue on DMLs, the autho

Three mothers of children with severe communication disabilities describe their experiences with speech-language pathologists and the intervention process. The parents were asked open-ended and descriptive questions. Their responses provide valuable insights and direction for professionals interested in working more closely with families of children with disabilities. The mothers describe their role as primary case managers for their children's treatment programs. They identify the type of speech-language pathologist they prefer to work with their child and the professional guidance they find

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), the most frequent microdeletion syndrome in humans, is related to a high risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. About 95% of patients with 22q11.2DS have speech and language impairments. Global articulation, story generation, and verbal memory tests were applied to compare articulatory characteristics of speech sounds, spontaneous language abilities, and immediate verbal memory between four groups of Serbian-speaking children: patients with 22q11.2DS, children with clinical presentation of 22q11.2DS that do not have the microdeletion, children w

The study evaluated the effectiveness of a computer-based Multi-Sensory Program (MSP) on English reading skills as a second language of fourth-grade students with reading difficulties and Dyslexia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Pretest-Posttest experimental design was used in this study. The analysis showed that average pretest score in both the experimental and control groups was almost the same and the average post-test score was much higher in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Moreover, results also reveal statistically significant difference in the students' mean

Augmented language systems have become both an integral component of communication intervention programs for children with severe communicative impairments and spurred research on their language and communication development. This study examined intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may influence the language development process for children with developmental disabilities, by exploring the relationship between varying degrees of symbol arbitrariness and extant speech comprehension skills in the discrimination, learning, and use of symbols for communication. For the study, 13 school-aged partic

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show prominent deficits in pragmatic aspects of language such as spoken narrative. Deficits in spoken narrative in school years lead to deficits in reading comprehension. Therefore, this randomized clinical trial research examined the influence of narrative intervention on spoken narrative and reading comprehension abilities in children with ASD.
METHODS: In the current double-blind, randomized clinical trial study, 21 students with ASD from second to seventh grade participated in the study. Two intervention methods were provided three

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the written language skills of children with auditory brainstem implants (ABI).
METHODS: In this study, 15 children (from second to eighth grades) with ABI were evaluated for their written language abilities using a written expression skill assessment form. Five different features of written expression points were scored and analyzed, yielding a composite score for written expression skills.
RESULTS: This study showed that all children with ABI needed more verbal cues than spontaneously written samples. Moreover, these children used short and simple senten

INTRODUCTION: Certain neuronal models of linguistic processing suggest that the basal ganglia play a key role in this processing, thanks to their integration within the so-called cortico-striato-cortical circuits.
DEVELOPMENT: A comparative analysis, at a phenotypic and molecular level, of the pathologies, syndromes and disorders that entail a structural alteration and/or a dysfunction of the basal ganglia is essential for validating and optimising such models, as well as for achieving a suitable characterisation of the genetic program responsible for the development and functioning of the 'l

This chapter provides an overview of (1) developmental timetables relevant to hearing, and (2) current pediatric audiological techniques and practices. Structural and functional development of the auditory pathway and the development of primary auditory processing are summarized. These developmental sequences appear to follow similar paths in humans and animals. Speech and music perception involve more complex processing and are strongly influenced by experience. Hearing disorders affect the perception of complex sounds in a variety of ways, depending on the sites of lesions. Early-onset heari

Emergency department (ED)-based substance use navigation programs have expanded access to addiction treatment, yet little is known about whether these programs equitably serve immigrant and refugee patients, particularly those with limited English proficiency. Language barriers are associated with reduced utilization of behavioral health services and lower likelihood of receiving appropriate referrals. We examined whether preferred language was associated with receipt of a substance use consultation with a trained health promotion advocate from Project ASSERT. We conducted a retrospective cros
