Studies were undertaken using human duodenal mucosa to determine whether it contained a counterpart to a newly identified iron-binding protein recently isolated from rat duodenum and named mobilferrin. Water-soluble homogenates were prepared from duodena of patients undergoing surgery for pancreatic carcinoma. The hepatotoxicity of cocaine in the mouse is associated with a significant amount (greater than 2 nmol/mg) of irreversible binding of a cocaine metabolite to hepatic protein. Lymphocytes binding C-reactive protein (CRP) were studied in 31 patients with acute rheumatic fever and 30 controls who were children. Marked elevations in both proportions and absolute numbers of CRP-binding lymphocytes were recorded in rheumatic fever (P less than 0.001). A study of adrenocorticosteroids and corticosteroid binding globulins was undertaken in 35 malnourished children with a weight deficit of 10 to 45%. The mean corticosteroid levels 5.9 +/- 3.0 mug% were not significantly different from control values of 6.43 +/- 3.2 mug%. Steroid levels were however low (4.38 +/- 1.8 mug%) in children with marasmic kwashiorkor. Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) are the main members of BPI-like family based on the similar protein structure and conserved gene homology. Both LBP and BPI participate in lipid metabolism and thereby involve in pathogenesis of certain cardiovascular diseases. Early diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is crucial to prevent lethal disease in immunocompromized hosts.
