Unveiling the Catalytic Pyrolysis Behavior and Kinetics of Epoxy Resin over Niobium Oxide-Tailored ZSM‑5 Zeolites.

The sustainable recycling of thermosetting epoxy resin (ER) waste remains a critical environmental challenge. While fast pyrolysis offers a viable upcycling route, the direct thermal degradation of ER predominantly yields low-value, oxygen-rich phenolic compounds. In this study, a series of hierarchical niobium oxide-tailored ZSM-5 zeolites (xNb-ZSM) were synthesized to promote the selective catalytic pyrolysis of ER into high-value aromatic hydrocarbons. Comprehensive characterizations (X-ray diffractometry (XRD), BET, TEM, and pyridine-adsorbed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR)

Comparative evaluation of pyrolysis oils derived from lignocellulosic biomass and municipal solid waste as potential bitumen modifiers.

The transition toward sustainable road construction has led to increased research on replacing conventional asphalt binders with bio-based and waste-derived alternatives. Bio-bitumen derived from lignocellulosic biomass and binders modified using domestic and industrial waste have shown significant potential in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80%. Life cycle assessments have reported net-negative emissions for certain biomass-based binders. However, these alternative binders may alter the chemical and molecular compositions of the base bitumen, thereby affecting its physical c

Valorization of pomegranate peel waste through pyrolysis-liquid-assisted ultrasound extraction: antioxidant, antibacterial and targeted phytochemical characterization.

BACKGROUND: Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel is a phenolic-rich processing by-product, but its valorization commonly relies on conventional solvents. This study examined an integrated approach in which pomegranate peel pyrolysis liquid (PP-PL) was repurposed as the extraction medium for ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of the same biomass. The methodological originality lies specifically in using biomass-derived PP-PL in UAE. RESULTS: PP-PL-assisted extract (PP-E) and an aqueous control extract (AQ-E), prepared from the same peel batch under identical UAE conditions, were compared. T

Combining Fractionation and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry Approaches to Characterize a Bio-Oil From Flax Shive Pyrolysis.

In a context where environmental concerns and circular economy drive innovation, co-products from the flax industry emerge as valuable lignocellulosic feedstocks. Pyrolysis of these biomasses generates bio-oils with complex and highly oxygenated composition, which requires in-depth molecular characterization to optimize valorization processes. This study focuses on the molecular-level characterization of bio-oil derived from flax shives, a local co-product in Normandy. Size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) was used to fractionate the bio-oil into five distinct fractions based on apparent molecul

Thermochemical Valorization of Silkworm Feeding Waste: Chemical Characterization and Biological Activities of the Pyrolysis-Derived Liquid Fraction.

Silkworm-rearing residues are an underused biomass resource that can be converted into value-added products. In this study, a condensable liquid product (SWP-Liq) was produced from these residues by pyrolysis at 325 ± 5 °C and evaluated for its chemical composition and in vitro biological activities. SWP-Liq yielded phenolic-, flavonoid-, and triterpenoid-equivalent values of 218.47 ± 22.40 mg GAE/g, 79.13 ± 3.55 mg QE/g, and 55.54 ± 6.15 mg EE/g, respectively. The ABTS•+ assay showed a higher radical-scavenging response than DPPH, while Fe3+- and Cu2+-reducing activities were also observed. S

Pyrolysis Compound-Specific Isotope Analysis of Proteins in Aged Paintings: Diketopiperazine δ13C Values as Collagen Source Indicators.

Proteins have been used as adhesives in art throughout history, but determining their source in aged paintings is challenging. Moreover, the distinction between terrestrial and aquatic animal glues is only achievable with proteomic approaches. Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of collagen, used in the neighboring field of archeology for analogous purposes, has so far required too much sample to be used for painted objects. However, this paper presents a methodology that enables a reduction of sample size by about 3 orders of magnitude (from mg to μg), widening the application of CSIA t

Investigation of hydrogen influence on compression ignition engine fuelled with pyrolysis blends using experimental and RSM methods.

This study experimentally investigates the performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of a single-cylinder diesel engine operated in dual-fuel mode using pyrolysis oil and gaseous hydrogen. Four fuel combinations were examined: neat diesel (100D), diesel–hydrogen (50D50H), diesel–pyrolysis oil (90D10P), and diesel–pyrolysis oil with hydrogen enrichment (90D10P + 50 LPH). The engine was operated at a constant speed of 1,500 rpm under varying load conditions (0–100%), and the results were analysed using response surface methodology (RSM). The 50D50H blend achieved the highest brake th

Co-Pyrolysis of Polyolefins and Silicone Rubber: Effects on Mass Balancing, Product Distribution, and Potential Siloxane Recovery.

Co-pyrolysis of polyolefins (LDPE, PP, PS) mixed with silicone rubber (SR) was investigated using a laboratory-scale pyrolysis apparatus to evaluate product composition, synergistic interactions, and siloxane recovery potential. Synergistic effects were assessed by comparing experimental mass balances and product distributions with calculated values derived from individual polymer pyrolysis. Co-pyrolysis resulted in a reduction in liquid yield and an increase in gaseous products and solid residue compared to calculated values, with liquid yields decreasing by up to ≈15 wt% at high SR content.

Optimized one-step pyrolysis synthesis of zinc-modified sludge biochar for enhanced perfluorooctane sulfonate removal from water.

Perfluoroocatane sulfonate (PFOS) has drawn increasing global attention due to its environmental omnipresence and adverse health effects. This study presents a synergistic strategy to address the dual challenge of legacy PFOS contamination and sustainable sewage sludge disposal by developing a novel, zinc-modified sludge-based biochar (Zn/SBC) for highly efficient PFOS removal. The innovation lies in the one-step pyrolysis using ZnCl2 as an activator, which dramatically enhanced the specific surface area by 50-fold (to 261.33 m2/g) by creating a well-developed micro- and mesoporous structure.

Investigation on tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) thermal decomposition behaviours: Evolutionary mechanisms of main pyrolysis products.

Tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-DBPE), as a new type of flame retardant, is widely used in electronic equipment. During its degradation process, some toxic brominated compounds can be produced and released into the environment, causing great harm to human health and the ecological environment. There are relatively few in-depth theoretical studies on the pyrolysis mechanism of TBBPA-DBPE, therefore, the evolution mechanism of thermal degradation products of TBBPA-DBPE is studied in detail by using the density functional theory method in this paper. The calculation resu

Selective lithium extraction from spent LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 batteries by co-pyrolysis with waste polyvinyl chloride plastics.

The selective extraction of lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries has attracted wide interest owing to its strategic value and scarcity of resources. Meanwhile, serious environmental issues have been generated by waste polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics around the world. In this study, a synergetic treatment method was investigated to achieve the selective extraction of lithium. Under optimal conditions, the lithium recovery efficiency was 90.60 %, while Co, Ni, and Mn from the spent lithium-ion batteries remained in the leaching residue. Thermodynamic calculations, XRD, XPS, and SEM-EDS rev

Multi-heating-rate pyrolysis study for modeling hydrocarbon production from in-situ conversion of Chang 7 shale.

The in situ conversion process (ICP) is one of the most developed technologies to recover oil from fined grained, low thermally matured shale. However, mathematical models capable of predicting the production profile of oil and gas under the constraints of heating rate and temperature remain underdeveloped. Therefore, pyrolysis experiments with different heating rates (2 °C /d, 5 °C /d, 10 °C /d and 20 °C /d) were performed on shales from the seventh member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation (Chang 7 shale), a representative target for ICP implementation. The effects of heating rate and temper

Enhanced mono-aromatics production by the CH4-assisted pyrolysis of microalgae using Zn-based HZSM-5 catalysts.

This study presents the catalytic pyrolysis of microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), using pure CH4 and H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition on three different HZSM-5 catalysts loaded with Zn, Ga, and Pt, aimed specifically at producing high-value mono-aromatics such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX). In comparison with that for the typical inert N2 environment, a pure CH4 environment increased the bio-oil yield from 32.4 wt% to 37.4 wt% probably due to hydrogen and methyl radical insertion in the bio-oil components. Furthermore, the addition of bimetals furthe

Adjustable nanoarchitectonics of N-doping Yolk-Shell carbon spheres via "Pyrolysis-Capture" method for High-Performance supercapacitor.

The energy storage capacity of porous carbon materials is closely tied to their surface structure and chemical properties. However, developing an innovative and straightforward approach to synthesize yolk-shell carbon spheres (YCs) remains a great challenge till date. Herein, we prepared a series of porous nitrogen-doped yolk-shell carbon spheres (NYCs) via a "pyrolysis-capture" method. This method involves coating the resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) resin sphere with a layer of compact silica shell induced by 2-methylimidazole (ME) catalysis to produce a confined nano-space. Based on the confine

Components Interaction of Cotton Stalk under Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Conversion: A Bio-Oil Pyrolysis Behavior Perspective Analysis.

The conversion of agricultural and forestry waste biomass materials into bio-oil by mild hydro-thermal technology has a positive effect on extending the agricultural industry chain and alleviating the world energy crisis. The interaction investigation of biomass components during bio-oil formation can be significant for the efficient conversion of lignocellulose when different raw materials are fed together. In this paper, a bio-oil pyrolysis behavior (thermogravimetric analysis, TG) perspective component interaction investigation of cotton stalks under low-temperature hydro-thermal conversion

Pyrolysis Kinetic Analysis of Sequential Extract Residues from Hefeng Subbituminous Coal Based on the Coats-Redfern Method.

Sequential extract residues (R i , i = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) were obtained from Hefeng acid-washing coal (HFAC) by petroleum ether, carbon disulfide, methanol, acetone, and isometric carbon disulfide/acetone mixture, sequentially. Pyrolysis behavior of the residues was determined using thermogravimetry analysis. The Coats-Redfern method with different reaction orders was used to analyze the pyrolysis kinetic of each sample, and the kinetic parameters, including correlation coefficient (R 2), activation energy (E), and pre-exponential factor (A), were calculated. Results showed that the weight los

Production of low-oxygen oil via catalytic co-pyrolysis of biogas residue and plastics by ZSM-5.

This work aimed to produce low-oxygen bio-oil through the co-pyrolysis of biogas residue (BR) with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). The effects of co-pyrolysis interactions on the kinetics and oxygen product distributions were studied. The kinetic results showed that the interaction of BR with PE in BR/PE blends decreased the apparent activation energy (E) in a range of 9.9-33.4 kJ/mol. The presence of PE promoted the deoxidation of oxygenated compounds as the proportion of PE in the mixture increased, which was attributed to free radicals produced by PE that reacted with the oxygenat

Synthesis of Fullerenes from a Nonaromatic Chloroform through a Newly Developed Ultrahigh-Temperature Flash Vacuum Pyrolysis Apparatus.

The flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) technique is useful for preparing curved polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) and caged nanocarbon molecules, such as the well-known corannulene and fullerene C60. However, the operating temperature of the traditional FVP apparatus is limited to ~1250 °C, which is not sufficient to overcome the high energy barriers of some reactions. Herein, we report an ultrahigh-temperature FVP (UT-FVP) apparatus with a controllable operating temperature of up to 2500 °C to synthesize fullerene C60 from a nonaromatic single carbon reactant, i.e., chloroform, at 1350 °C or abo

Syntheses of Combretastatins D-1, D-2, and D-4 via Ring Contraction by Flash Vacuum Pyrolysis.

We report the syntheses of combretastatins D-2 and D-4 as well as a formal synthesis of combretastatin D-1 by a conceptually new route harnessing a ring-contracting flash vacuum pyrolytic extrusion of sulfur dioxide from the respective 16-membered sulfone precursors. Via flash vacuum pyrolysis, even metaparacyclophanes as small and strained as the hitherto unknown oxa[1.5]metaparacyclophane could be prepared as a side product en route to combretastatin D-2 by synchronous extrusion of SO2 and CO2.
