Metagenomic analysis of the viromes of three North American bat species: viral diversity among different bat species that share a common habitat.

Effective prediction of future viral zoonoses requires an in-depth understanding of the heterologous viral population in key animal species that will likely serve as reservoir hosts or intermediates during the next viral epidemic. The importance of bats as natural hosts for several important viral zoonoses, including Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, and rabies viruses and severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV), has been established; however, the large viral population diversity (virome) of bats has been partially determined for only a few of the ∼1,200 bat species. Aspects of vitamin A.

Musgrave Park Hospital in 1942 was the site of an Anglo-American Vitamin A caper. A threatened court-martial was pre-empted. Subsequently the Queen's lecturer in Anatomy, JW Millen, who was the other lecturer to the first editor of this journal, RH Hunter, did much distinguished work. The neurological effects of Vitamin A were elucidated. Further work on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), placenta, thalidomide and poliomyelitis led to the pre-eminence in applied anatomy and teratology of now Reader James Wilson Millen and Professors JD Boyd and WJ Hamilton, all Queen's Medical School graduates. Lung cancer and diesel exhaust: a review.

The evidence from animal studies indicates that organic extracts of diesel particulate are mutagenic and carcinogenic. Of four animal inhalation studies, two have been positive and two have been largely negative. The most recent data indicate that inhalation studies may be positive only with high doses of exhaust. Human studies of diesel-exposed occupations have been inconclusive. These studies have focused on truck drivers, bus drivers and garage workers, railroad workers, and heavy equipment operators. Most human studies have not been able to estimate exposure to diesel exhaust. Negative stu

System Integration and Participant-Level Validation of a Gate-Based Contactless Multimodal System for Railway Pre-Duty Screening.

Railway pre-duty assessments require rapid, objective measurements that do not disrupt operational workflows. This study evaluated the system-level integration and participant-level measurement performance of a gate-based Through-Pass platform for railway pre-duty screening. The platform combines radio-frequency identification, infrared temperature sensing, camera-based remote photoplethysmography, breath-alcohol sensing, signal-quality control, edge processing, and rule-based screening. Participant-level method comparison was performed in 300 adults using paired Through-Pass and reference mea

Modelling herbicides movement in railway embankments in Germany.

Railway operations have long relied on herbicides to keep tracks free of vegetation and ensure safety and track stability. In Germany, regulatory changes introduced in 2020 have increased concern about the long-term environmental effects of herbicide use along railway corridors. This study examines the fate and transport of glyphosate, its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), flumioxazin, and flazasulfuron beneath railway embankments using HYDRUS-2D simulations and field monitoring data from five German sites. Simulations were carried out under identical application scenarios, focusin

Presence of vitality evidence in railway run-over cases in the autopsy material of the Kraków Department of Forensic Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of vitality in railway run-over cases is crucial for accurately distinguishing deaths resulting from accidents, suicides, or other types of events from those caused by criminal activity. To determine vitality at the time of the run-over, autopsy evaluation relies on the presence of indicators of preserved circulation and respiratory function at the moment of the incident. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study is to determine the frequency of selected vitality indicators in railway run-over cases and to analyze their relationship with toxicological findings, the sex o

PM2.5 and NOX concentrations decrease as a result of a railway electrification.

This work examines the impact of the electrification of the Holon-Bat Yam passenger train line (central Israel) on air pollutant concentrations using data collected from air quality monitoring stations that operated at the train stations across the electrified train line. We present statistically significant reduction in the annual average NO2, NO and NOX concentrations (29-45%, 79-85% and 65-75%, respectively), attributed to the electrification of the passenger train line. The drop in the NO and NOX concentrations was much stronger than in the NO2 concentrations, since NO is the main nitrogen

3D modelling and simulation of thermal effects and dispersion of particles carrying infectious respiratory agents in a railway transport coach.

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic now belongs to the long history of infectious diseases that have struck humanity, pathogenic biological agents continue to pose a recurring threat in private places, but also and mainly in places where the public congregates. In our recent research published in this journal in 2022 and 2023, we considered the illustrative example of a commuter train coach in which a symptomatic or asymptomatic passenger, assumed to be infected with a respiratory disease, sits among other travellers. The passenger emits liquid particles containing, for example, COVID-19 virions

Single-cell transcriptomics reveals the pulmonary inflammation induced by inhalation of subway fine particles.

People generally take the subway and inevitably inhale the fine particles (PM2.5) on subway platforms. This study revealed whether and how subway PM2.5 causes lung inflammation. Herein, the pulmonary inflammatory response to subway PM2.5 was observed in mice, manifesting as the inflammatory cells infiltration and collagen deposition in tissue, inflammatory cytokine enhancement in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and Toll-like receptors signal pathway activation in the lungs. Furthermore, single-cell RNA sequencing unearthed subway PM2.5-induced cell-specific responses in the lungs. Twenty immune s

Estimation of inhaled airborne particle number concentration by subway users in Seoul, Korea.

Exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) causes several diseases in the human body. The smaller particles, which have relatively large surface areas, are actually more harmful to the human body since they can penetrate deeper parts of the lungs or become secondary pollutants by bonding with other atmospheric pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides. The purpose of this study is to present the number of PM inhaled by subway users as a possible reference material for any analysis of the hazards to the human body arising from the inhalation of such PM. Two transfer stations in Seoul, Korea, which
