Epidemiology of non-submersion injuries in aquatic sporting and recreational activities.

Although the issues of drowning and near-drowning in aquatic sporting and recreational activities receive considerable attention in the epidemiological literature, there is not a recognised literature on non-submersion injuries occurring in these activities. This review draws together the epidemiological literature on non-submersion injuries and describes the incidence, nature and causes of these injuries, common risk factors, and strategies for prevention. Activities covered by the review include swimming, diving, boating, surf sports, fishing, water polo and water sliding. For most activitie

Luteal phase deficiency in recreational runners: evidence for a hypometabolic state.

Exercising women with amenorrhea exhibit a hypometabolic state. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of luteal phase deficient (LPD) menstrual cycles to metabolic hormones, including thyroid, insulin, human GH (hGH), leptin, and IGF-I and its binding protein levels in recreational runners. Menstrual cycle status was determined for three consecutive cycles in sedentary and moderately active women. Menstrual status was defined as ovulatory or LPD. Subjects were either sedentary (n = 10) or moderately active (n = 20) and were matched for age (27.7 +/- 1.2 yr), body mass (60.

Recreational scuba diving, patent foramen ovale and their associated risks.

Scuba diving has become a popular leisure time activity with distinct risks to health owing to its physical characteristics. Knowledge of the behaviour of any mixture of breathable gases under increased ambient pressure is crucial for safe diving and gives clues as to the pathophysiology of compression or decompression related disorders. Immersion in cold water augments cardiac pre- and afterload due to an increase of intrathoracic blood volume and peripheral vasoconstriction. In very rare cases, the vasoconstrictor response can lead to pulmonary oedema. Immersion of the face in cold water is

Recreational scuba divers' aversion to low-frequency underwater sound.

Increasing use of active low-frequency sonar by submarines and ships raises the risk of accidental exposure of recreational divers to low-frequency underwater sound (LFS). This study aimed to characterize the subjective responses of recreational scuba divers to LFS to ascertain the extent to which LFS may impact their enjoyment, comfort, or time spent underwater. Seventeen male and nine female recreational scuba divers participated. Diving was conducted in an acoustically transparent tank located within a larger anechoic pool. Subjects wore scuba gear and were positioned I m below the surface

Tick bite and Lyme borreliosis risk at a recreational site in England.

The risk of tick bite and Lyme borreliosis in a forested area in England with public access was studied over a two-year period. Tick infestation levels were high with more than 1000 members of the public reporting for tick removal at a local clinic. Most of the attached ticks were nymphs (82%) and distinct differences in anatomical sites of attachment were observed in children and adults. Children sustained nymphal bites to the head, neck and axilla region much more frequently than adults (48 vs. 10%), whereas adults were bitten on the lower legs more frequently than children (46 vs. 9%). The natural history of untreated anterior cruciate tears in recreational athletes.

A followup study was performed to elucidate the natural course of acutely torn anterior cruciate ligaments in recreational athletes. Fifty-six consecutive patients had arthroscopy within 2 weeks of their initial injuries; however, no surgery was done on the torn anterior cruciate ligament. Twenty anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament combined ruptures occurred. Patient ages ranged from 14 to 50 years old (mean, 28.9 years). Followup periods ranged from 2 to 10 years (mean, 5 years 6 months). Through examination with the KT-1000 arthrometer, side-to-side differences of anter

Noise levels from toys and recreational articles for children and teenagers.

This study examined the noise level emitted by toys and recreational articles used by children and teenagers. The results indicate that many of the items tested emit sufficiently intense noise to be a source of noise induced hearing loss in school-age children. While the baby toys provided noise exposure within the limits of national regulations, they are most intense in a frequency range that corresponds to the resonance frequency of the external auditory canal of very young children. Hobby motors emit noise that may require protection depending upon the length of use. Fire-crackers and cap g

Helmet protection from head injuries among recreational bicyclists.

Head injuries account for the great majority of bicycling deaths and hospital admissions. Helmet use has been suggested as an effective means of preventing injury, but few studies have addressed this issue. We collected questionnaire data by mail from 191 recreational bicyclists who reported having fallen and struck their heads in a cycling mishap. Information was collected on the nature of the mishap, the extent of injury, and the helmet status of the rider at the time of the fall. Fifty-seven percent of riders were wearing helmets during the mishap. Helmet wearers were significantly older th

Shigellosis associated with recreational water contact in Los Angeles County.

An outbreak of shigellosis associated with swimming at a human-made lake during the Labor Day weekend occurred in Los Angeles County in 1985. Sixty-eight persons had onset of diarrheal illness within 1 week following exposure at the recreational site. Thirty-three of these cases were culture-confirmed as shigellosis (29 Shigella sonnei, 4 Shigella boydii). Fifteen persons were hospitalized. Illness was highly associated with water contact, specifically swallowing water while swimming (P less than 0.001) and age less than 15 years (P less than 0.001). Water samples from the swimming area had hi

Physical Activity and Recreation for Kids Study (PARKS): Park-intensive community outreach for child physical activity group-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Park use among urban children can contribute to higher child physical activity (PA), yet most children do not use parks or park sports programs. The PARKS (Physical Activity and Recreation for Kids Study) group randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of park-level intensive community outreach on change in child MVPA, light and sedentary activity. It was hypothesized that children in the intervention parks would increase their MVPA and decrease their sedentary activity compared to children in the usual parks. METHODS: Twenty urban parks were randomized to intensive park ou

Contributing to 'a sense of purpose' - Evaluating consumer recovery progress after attending a therapeutic-recreation intervention programme: A quantitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The recommended objective for mental health plans and policies is the adoption of recovery approaches to mental healthcare. Mental health recovery is no longer defined by symptom resolution but as a journey towards a meaningful life from the consumer's own perspective. Recovery approaches focus on consumers' strengths, feelings of well-being and the achievement of personal goals. Designing recovery-oriented interventions is crucial for supporting people in their personal recovery journey. AIM: This study sought to evaluate how attending a recovery-oriented intervention impacts t

Health effects following subacute exposure to geogenic dust collected from active drainage surfaces (Nellis Dunes Recreation Area, Las Vegas, NV).

The specific health effects of direct inhalation of fine minerogenic dusts generated by natural soil surfaces remain poorly known and relatively little researched. To learn more about this exposure and its contribution to human health effects, we surveyed surface sediment and characterized dust from the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area (NDRA) in Clark County, Nevada, a popular off-road vehicle (ORV) recreational site. Dry drainage systems at NDRA are commonly used as natural trail systems for ORV recreation; these surfaces also are characterized by high concentrations of heavy metals. Geogenic dus

Investigating social drones for recreational running through co-design.

INTRODUCTION: Human-drone interaction is an emerging field investigating ways to extend the conventionally passive role of drones with autonomous, socially interactive functionalities. Drones offer unique opportunities for applications, such as exercise support, due to their mobility and flexibility. While previous research has studied drones for, e.g., pacing, gait analysis, and accessibility in running contexts, we propose that an equally crucial part of such applications is the socially interactive role of the drone. METHODS: We present a study in two phases. In the first phase, we conduct
